Oh my god. Work has been hell.

We're either super slow or super busy with large parties at work.

Im only getting Min Wage, which is 7.95/hr, and Im making big bucks.

My first week I worked 60 hours. I didn't realize I worked that much. My second check, I had 62 hours. I've been getting 3 days off since we're slow.

O.E.S. which is the restuarant I work for, is highly affiliated with the University of Oregon. We do caterings and host parties for them as well as Nike which is started off here in Eugene, OR. USA.

So when the Uni is back in session, I've been told we're busier.

Woot! More hours for me.

Right now, I keep working either 5-CL or 3-CL depending on the day.

3-CL is mainly Mon - Thursday. We close at 9:30, I dont get out till 11:30 most of the time.

Even though I hate some of my co-workers cause they aren't serious about their job, Its a good job.

Im happy to even have a job.

For those who don't live in the US,

We're currently going through a depression cause of this invasion of Iraq.

We had no reason to go over there =/

Now we are suffering the consequences. Im hoping I'll continue to have a job for a long long long time.

Yeah, that depression really sucks for you guys. Canada is kinda being dragged down too, but we are also becoming stronger at the same time (go Canadian Dollar! lol) I don't see it getting REALLY bad, but it's still going to be a real strain for a while. I am especially not fond of the gas, milk, and wheat prices. I mean, I live in the prairies, I'M SURROUNDED BY WHEAT! Also, this is going to really hurt me when I'm living on my own - talk about bad diet due to candy being so much cheaper than everything else lol. Although I foresee myself doing a lot more walking in the future.

That's why I'm going into the Health field. We are really really REALLY short on everything (from health care aides to surgeons) The RN program has a 2 year waiting list because so many people are trying to become one, but there aren't enough spaces rolleyes OPEN MORE SPACES AND WE WOULDN'T BE IN SUCH A HORRIBLE POSITION AS WE ARE! lol

So yeah, I am well on my way to getting accepted into the Practical Nursing program. I have to go to Brandon in a couple weeks for orientation and a SAAT test (basically just a test on the basics in stuff like math and english) and based on the test they decide whether I'm in or not. So... I'm basically in. Hopefully it allows me to start in October - which means I'm in school all of 2009 and 2010 I start my new life.

I hate the fact that those who didn't vote for him are heavily effected by it too. There are certain areas in here in the States who aren't being effected too bad by it. But it's totally obvious where I live.

Good Luck with your PN program. I wish you the best of luck!

I've been eating A LOT of fast food again cause it's cheaper than going anywhere else.

When I took my g/f out to dinner that one time, we probally spent around $75 but I wouldn't know since my work paid for the meal n_n

Saw in the papers recently that our little recession should be getting better. So yay for Canada. You should move here. 3nodding lol

Fast food isn't healthy though! Although $75 for a meal for two is quite expensive! @.@

I'm moving in about a month and a half if I get into the program - so I'm gonna be on my own for food and stuff. Probably won't choose the healthiest foods out there, but hopefully I stick to my plan of joining a gym when I'm there. I found that I do better academically if I'm totally physically exhausted (so my random excuses to avoid studying can't come into play because I can't move haha, nothing left to do but read... or watch tv... or play video games lol)

wow your min wage is $7.95?? Over here its $12 eek thats pretty crap i must admit sad i think we are going through a ressession at the moment but only people with mortgages are seriously hit
PostPosted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 8:59 pm

It's something like $8 here.

I dunno because I haven't worked for minimum wage in a long time.

I was getting $14.39 at the end of my time with the pork plant.

Might end up working minimum wage at the pizza place in Brandon when I move... but I will also be getting tips as I believe they want me to deliver (doubt they'd scam me into a cook job there lol, these people have been in my life... all my life!)

I've wanted to move to Canada since I was 7 honestly. I knew one day the US would ******** up and it came true.

Anyways.

My hours were cut at work. I thought maybe it was cause we are super slow. So after 3 weeks of only working 3 days a week I went up to my manager and was like "Hey Ryan. Whats up with the dishwashers hours?"

He did say we were slow then he said since I asked, he wanted to talk to me.

he told me Im a hard worker and he dosen't want me to leave at all but Im not the quickest when it comes to washing dishes. He told me once I prove myself worthy of more hours, he'll give me more. So today, I spent the first 3 of my 5 hours washing dishes and doing it quickly.

I did quite well n_n

Bleugh. I hate the 'you have to prove yourself' speeches. They usually just make me give up lol Or I end up getting angry and talking back at the person, which usually doesn't end up well.

... actually it did end up beneficial ONCE. But that was because they didn't realize that I was the one doing everything already, and that other people were getting the credit. So the person watched us for about half an hour (probably not even) and realized I was right. biggrin

But I usually don't get those speeches, because even if I do work slower than everyone else I have no problem sacrificing my breaks/staying late to keep up.

Oh, and word of advice if you DO move to Canada - DON'T MOVE TO MANITOBA!!!

Tonight I just realized why I work at the pace I do.

Its cause Im working not only for myself, but for my other co-workers, sometimes my other 2 co-workers.

I was releived one of em was like "Hey Andy, want some help with the mats on the line?"

I was like 'Hell yeah man'

Its not like Im trying to go slow, I've just got too many things to do cause the others are too ******** damn lazy to do it on their own...

Thanks for the heads up.

I was thinking of somewhere like Alberta. My friend has told me good things about there.

Or maybe Calgary. I have a friend who lives there and she says it's an awesome place to live and there's plenty of jobs opened.

Ya, I hear you. It was like that for me when I worked at Pizza Hut - which is what I was referring to in my last post lol.

Being an injured female and forced to do garbage duty, dishwashing, and the salad line by yourself = not fun.

Or when all the other cooks decide to take their breaks at the same time (with the dishwasher, who is behind and we lack such necessities as cutlery, plates, and glasses) and suddenly there's a rush of orders to attend to. Therefore I have dishwashing, cooking, salad line, and cutting the pizzas when they come out of the oven to do.

Then there's the above scenario with added twists such as:

-No boxes made
-Out of cheese at the line
-Out of pepperoni at the line
-Out of other ingredient at the line (sometimes having to do prep work)
-NO CHEESE IN RESTAURANT (happened at least 3 times)
-NO PEPPERONI IN RESTAURANT (happened at least 7 times)
-Some orders consisting of >5 pizzas
-Order with allergy alert (therefore have to wash everything you need to use for the pizza and sometimes having to open new boxes of cheese or something so that you don't contaminate the pizza)
-etc.

I don't regret quitting.

----

I revise my warning: Move to Manitoba for a year. That way, you appreciate wherever you move to afterwards tenfold.

Oh jeeze. That would suck heavily.

I dont understand how the heck they are allowed to take their breaks all at once.

That seems unfair for you and for everyone else who is working who is not on break.

Lol I applied at Pizza-Hut a few months ago. They turned me down cause they were looking for drivers and I dont have my license xD

One manager told me they needed cooks. The other told me "Nope, we only want drivers"
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 2:30 pm

They weren't supposed to. But they're like little kids that way. As soon as the manager's attention was elsewhere it was like the green light to do whatever the hell you want.

Closing also sucked, because half the time there wasn't a closing dishwasher. So you'd have to clean up the ENTIRE kitchen and dish pit. It usually took me an hour or more AFTER CLOSE to finish cleaning. Friday and Saturday nights it could take me 2+ hours extra to close.

It takes me and two other dishwashers 1 1/2 hours to close to begin with.

So an hour with just you, thats pretty good.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:53 pm

Well, I would start an hour before close - so it took me two hours.

Rarely did I get EVERYTHING done. The closing manager would usually say "good enough, let's get out of here" before I could do the stuff that I know hasn't been done for a good two weeks (cleaning the pasta cooker for example - that one went about 4 months without being drained and cleaned. Then I started closing)

I take the time to clean the modly water under the sink. Otherwise(No freaking joke here) it smells like a**. I bet when I go back to work tommorow there's going to be a lot. None of my other felllow dishwashers really take care of it ._.

Also, I finally figgured out why the Pepsi tasted moldy.

It needed to be changed and nobody changed it.

Plus while I was at it, a couple of the waitresses asked me to check the Sierra Mist and Root Beer. Mist was empty as well as Dr. Pepper.
