How did the Zerg get off of their home planet in the first place? Were the Mutalisks flapping their wings out in space?

No, no. I meant more along the lines of how it would be physically possible for the Zerg to have left their planet. They have mutalisks, which can fly, but flapping wings only work when there's air being pushed down by them. As they go further up, the density of the air begins lowering, until it reaches zero. This means that they would not be able to fly any higher once they reach a certain altitude (definitely before they actually hit space).
Did Blizzard ever explain this?

There is an answer to the question and they do explain it. I forgot where I read it but all the flying zergs were mutated to handle space flight. It might either be in the game or one of the books I can't remember where.

I think they use some sort of internal gas to propel themselves when in space but I don't know how they would do a faster than light travel. I'm thinking it must do with a cerebrate level mind since it can reach across the galaxy to control its brood.

It was in one of those books that came with the battle chest and was explained in the overall story of the Zerg.


When the Xel'Naga created them they gave them basically the ability to be super adaptive and mutate to deal with just about any problem. However the species they started with "Some worm" didnt adapt itself. Basically it assimilated every other species around it into its little collective to work arounds its problems.


As for the space problem I believe that Mutalisks and scourges were originally space migrating species that wound up around char at some point and the Zerg took that space travel ability into use. And once theyd assimilated a few they began to adapt all other parts of the collective so they could survive space travel as well. As for the FTL speed Id say they got it when they took out the Xel'Naga. From one of the destroyed ships or something.



Theyre like a Borg of Starcraft taking the best parts of several different species and combining them into one ugly little abomination. But Im sure you knew all of that already.
