I know it's interpreted as "Fire at Will" but literally, does it mean "Fire Free" or "Fire Freely"? I've heard both and it's driving me insane. Oops, already there.

I'm fairly certain it's "Fire free".
Our old German students at my school always had 'Frei' written in thier timetables for free periods.
So frei must mean free. I should imagine freely is similar but with some difference in the word spelling or pronounciation.

So frei must mean free. I should imagine freely is similar but with some difference in the word spelling or pronunciation. That's what I thought. But when I plugged it into Babble fish, it said 'Fire Freely'. So I don't know if they're wrong or what. They've been wring before. Wait, I remember a foreign exchange student we had from Germany. His name was Marco (polo rofl ). He was only a sophmore but knew as much as our seniors, and more than some. He left for home after 6th period and I saw on his schedule, 7th and 8th period had "Frei" written in. I asked him what that meant and he said "That means free. It is my free period. Oh my God, What is wrong with this computer again?" It was our Digital Graphics and Animation class and his computer just did the blue screen of death. So yeah, I think it means 'free'.

"Frei" does mean "free". Literally, "feuer frei" is "fire free". But it means the same as our "fire at will".

frei itself is free,
so Feuer Frei can be Freely or Free, here (im in Germany rigjh now) they use frei also to said without, for example "Fuerefrei" would be "without fire", and something like that, thats why some times you can translated like free or freely, or without it, it depends how you used,
I think that i dont made a point but whatever, i just wanted to show something else

That's just TOO good!
Would you mind terribly if I nicked the hacking idea and stuffed it into my fiction?
