I just want to know the difference. Mainly, I want to know why you can't put a "ni" in "doko desu ka" like how you do in "doko ni imasu ka."
Why can't it be doko ni desu ka? What are the technicalities here?

The short answer is ni always goes before aru/iru when a place or question of where a place is, is involved. Not so with Desu.

The best way to explain it is this way:
You can't use "ni" with "desu" ever. It's just something you'll have to accept and remember ^_^
"desu" is a special kind of verb. It's not so much an action but a state... If you want, look up "copula" because that is the part of speech it is.
