Here’s a cake I created for the occasion.
Warning! – Very messy decorator at work.

Sorry if the pictures are big, I took them using my phone and when I made them smaller the quality was terrible. Bear with me.
If anyone wants to make icing decorations, PM for tips.
To make the decorations I used runout icing (Icing sugar + Egg Whites + Lemon Juice) You also need to use a special type of paper to do them, called Wax paper. You could use normal baking paper but you'll find that the design sticks to the paper and breaks. Wax paper is see through so you can easily trace a picture, as I did.

What do you think?
By the way there are 2 small round cakes supporting the Happy Birthday design.
The DVDs and manga are also small cakes. I covered them with sugar paste and a printed edible cover. I didn't want to do the cover design because I wanted the covers to be perfect.

The baking took about a day, since I had to make two large cakes, and alot of small ones. I used a plain vanilla sponge for the cake but as you can see, it has strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream in the middle.

The runout icing has a variation of flavours depending on their colour.
Black = Chocolate
Yellow = Banana
Red = Strawberry
White = Vanilla
Blue = Pineapple

I also did an Integra chibi figure, but she broke when I was putting the cake together... crying

Wow that is crazy neat to see how you put that all together.
Boy I would have never though I would see anything as neat as that.
Thank you so much for the cake it was beautiful.
I can almost taste it.

I was wondering about the absence of Integra. xd

Honestly, I'm still having a real hard time seeing the manga and DVDs as cakes. I see ruffled pages on the manga and light reflecting off the DVD! Cake decorations can mimic that? eek

Glad you posted these Dita!

This is too amazing for words. Really and truly. So many details! Ah, I love how Alucard's head is cut off! The chibi theme is great too - it fits the guild. mrgreen And the little eyes - outstanding!
So that's how you made the figures! Coolness.

Yup, you can make everything waxy and shiny. (Ever seen those plastic looking edible roses? Same idea)

I printed the covers on edible wax paper.
I measured the sponge to fit the DVD size and then I covered it with sugar paste.

What you're actually seeing in the covers is the paper glued to the sugar paste, there is a thin layer of royal icing keeping the covers apart to give it the feel an open cover. I drew lines to create pages.
You know why they're so shiny? Because the damn paper wouldn't stick to the sugar paste, and I had to use gallons of edible glue. The whole thing took ages under the heater to dry.

My phone makes everything appear shiny.
In all honesty, they don’t look as impressive in real life. There are parts where the glue didn’t set properly, creating some discoloration on the edible ink. I am happy that they look so realistic in the pictures…although they look rather thin, and in real life they are not.

We have an amazing scanner at the food college I work in, so it was easy to scan and print the covers. I used my manga, and the first volume is incredibly old, so I liked the realism.

Wow. This is the best cake I ever saw in my entire life. It's so pretty, and cute, and well-made, and it looks delicious. (Please excuse me for a moment while I wipe off the waterfall of drool coming out of my mouth). It's just absolutely spectacular! Thank you for sharing. 3nodding heart

you know, it'd be totally awesome if that were true, but having attended culinary school myself, i know the limits of the mediums, and those are real DVDs and books.

the real cake itself is awesome beyond belief tho. ^_^! congrats on it.

they ARE real books and dvds. even with gumpaste and fondant, that level of precision on the edges would be impossible, and you can clearly see pages and the seam in the dvd case.

a cake that small would crack and warp immediately if it were propped up unsupported as the items pictured are, and if it had a baseboard, you'd be able to see it even if it were wrapped in fondant. the side shot clearly shows pages and the book arching, not splitting as a cake would.

i can pretend for the sake of the event thread that they're not, but they are real books and dvds.

the rest of the actual cake is amazing, and i still love the piped royal icing characters, they're awesome.
