WELCOME TO CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES
SEVENTH YEAR CLASSROOM

PROFESSOR STELLA SAMUELS

Professor Samuels can often be found either in her office or taking care of Hogwarts' many creatures, when she isn't teaching. If you need to ask her a question outside of class, then go to her office. If she's there, knock and go in. If not, then write your question on a slip of parchment and slip it under her door. She'll either call you into her office or have an owl deliver the response.

CoMC Classroom

The CoMC Classroom is a large room located on one of the ground floors of the castle. This room is useful for creatures that can easily escape and and/or can be contained in a room. There are about 25 desks, arranged in five rows of five. The desks are a little worn due to the creatures that have managed to get at them, but are in good condition overall. There is also an outside area, specially reserved for the occasion when class needs to be taught outside due to the creatures' needs or requrements. This area consists of a few logs arranged in a similar way to the classroom. If you need to write something, you are urged to use your textbook as something hard. Professor Samuels will announce when outdoor/indoor classes shall be.

RULES

1) Follow all gaia TOS (no joke)
2) Follow all guild rules (seriously)
3) Behave in class. Failure to do so will result in points being taken away.
4) If we don't finish a lesson, then it is up to you to learn the rest of the material, as you will be tested on it.
5) Homework may or may not be assigned. If I do assign it, post it in my office thread. If I find it posted in the thread, the highest it would earn is an Acceptable (A).
arrow When posting the homework to my office thread, write "CoMC Homework #", depending on what number it is, on the first line.
arrow On the second line, write your character's name.
arrow On the third line, write their year.
arrow On the fourth line, write their house.
arrow Skip a line and then should come the assignment.
arrow One more thing (something that I probably shouldn't mention): keep your homework somehow in line with your character. If your profile says that your character is lazy and has no interest to schoolwork, then your homework can't be the best assignment I've ever read, except once or twice because the material managed to interest them. If it continues to be a growing trend, Professor Samuels will have to assume that your character is cheating, even though you really aren't. Stay in character, or adjust your character during rping for the change.
6) If I don't grade your homework within a day of you posting it, then don't panic. It means I've been busy. I will get to it and I will give you the points you deserve.

GRADES
PostPosted: Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:09 pm

"Hmm, first..." Morgan slipped through the doorway of the Care of Magical Creatures classroom. The room was quiet, with the sound of her footsteps being the only thing heard as she walked nimbly to the front of the room. She took a seat in the first desk of the far left row. To pass the time, the redhead flipped lazily through the text book. Having read it from cover to cover many times before, the pages were bent here and there and had extra notes written in the margins. She settled on refreshing her knowledge of dragons for the time being.

Moira rushed through the doorway to the classroom, convinced that she would be the last person to arrive. She stopped short when she reached the rows of desks, and saw only one student already there. Judging by the red hair on the girl, a deeper red than her own, she decided it was Morgan. She followed the row directly behind her, and chose a seat diagonally right and behind her. The room was dead silent, and Moira felt ueasy. Without realizing, she began humming an old Parisian song that her mother sometimes sang to Edgar when he couldn't sleep, which was becoming more and more often.

Professor Stella Samuels casually strolled into the room, not really expecting anyone to really be on time. By the time most of her students were taking the seventh year N.E.W.T.S. classes, they had gotten lazy and fell into the habit of not really getting to class on time or sometimes even at all Of course, Stella had been known to be late on some occasions as well, so she usually let it slide as long as the tardy offender did not disrupt the class.

When she saw two girls already sitting there, she was truly stunned. It had been a while since she'd seen punctuality, so it was indeed surprising. She walked up to the front of the classroom. Had this been her third year classroom, the students would have not believed that she was the professor. Care of Magical Creatures was by far a very rough and messy subject and the students usually expected some musclely, tall man with lots of physical strength to teach it. Stella was about as far away from that as possible: she was petite and small, not to short, with tiny arms and smooth skin. In short, she looked like a china doll. But since this was her seventh year class, they expected her appearance.

"Welcome." she said, greeting the two girls that were there already. "Since there really is no one here as of yet, you're welcome to ask me about whatever you want. I could get started on the actual lesson for today, which is on the acromantula, but we can wait if you'd like. I leave that choice up to you." She paused at her podium, opening up her lesson plans to today's topic.

"Good morning Professor." Moira stopped humming, realizing that it was happening, and possibly annoying those around her. She flushed, and turned her eyes to her desk. There were claw marks gouged into the right top corner, and she followed them with her fingers. Her thoughts streamed back to the summer, when she had read Edgar a book about a fantastic beast named Buckbeak, and his adventure. He had thought it was the most amazing thing he ever heard, and insisted on being called Edgarbeak from then on. Thankfully the stage only lasted a week or so. Looking back to the professor, she answered, "Well, I wouldn't mind if we started ma'am. It's been a slow day so far."

Morgan looked up from the book when the professor entered the classroom. She glanced around and saw the room was empty, save for herself and Moira. Shooting the other lighter redhead a half smile, she turned back around to face the professor as she spoke. She nodded in agreement with what Moira said. "I'd like to start as well." Leaving the page full of dragon facts, Morgan flipped through the book until she came upon the section on the acromantula.

Professor Samuels nodded her head. "Very well." Professor Samuels said. "Two things before I begin. One: As you should remember, as I lecture, the board will write everything pertaining to the topic down, so don't strain yourself to write down the material. Two: Since you two are the only ones in here right now, I will award just you two 10 house points apiece."

Looking down on her notes, Professor Samuels began her lecture.

Quote:
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The Acromantula is a species of giant spider, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo. It was rumored that a colony of them can be found in the Forbidden Forest, which has been confirmed a few years ago, though few sightings were recorded. As an extra precaution, any student found wondering into the forest without supervision will be subject to expulsion.

The Acromantula's webs are large and dome-shaped. They have eight eyes, are highly intelligent and capable of human speech. They are typically covered in thick black hair, with a legspan that can reach up to fifteen feet. They possess a set of giant fangs which they use to eat live prey of mammals or their own dead kin. The pincers produce a clicking sound when they are agitated or excited. These fangs contain highly toxic venom, valued at 100 Galleons a pint, which is even potent for a short time after death. The venom is a Class A Non-Tradeable Material.
The female Acromantula is usually larger than the male, and can lay up to one hundred soft, wide, beach ball-sized eggs at a time. They usually hatch in six to eight weeks.

Acromantulas are believed to be a wizard-bred species, designed to guard dwellings or treasure hoardes, and were first created before the Ban on Experimental Breeding in 1965. They have a taste for human flesh, and thereby are categorized as an XXXXX creature, which means wizard killers and are impossible to train or domesticate. Their known enemy, as well as that of other spiders, is the Basilisk, which shall be covered in the next lecture.

Once she finished, Professor Samuels closed her book. She looked at the board to see that it had drawn a picture of an acromantula. One of the chalk was enchanted to draw pictures, maybe with a few exaggerations and it took the oppertunity to draw venom coming from the acromantula. She smiled and turned back to the two girls. "Any questions?" she asked.

Moira raised her hand and asked, "If the colony in the Forest is real, why are there so few sightings? Wouldn't there be many?" Picturing all the spiders, living in secret so close gave her a shiver. She wasn't afraid of spiders, but anything that had a taste for wizards wasn't anything she wanted to encounter. She glanced at Morgan to gage her reaction to the vivid drawing on the board.

"That's a very good question, Miss Canen." Professor Samuels replied. "Considering this is a school, magizoologists are not allowed to come and study it in the large droves that are necessary in order to sufficiently defend against them. We only allow them to come during the summer months in such groups, but it is far too hot for the acromantulas to really surface. Even in Borneo, they prefer shade at this time of year. This makes it difficult to find them. And since no one else is supposedly allowed into the forest during the school year, there have been almost no sightings reported. Does this answer your question?"

At this point, since it was drawn with enchanted chalk, the chalk acromantula began to scurry around the inside of the chalkboard, clicking together its pincers. Professor Samuels looked at and laughed. Turning back to the class, "It still amuses me when those drawings start moving.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 18, 2008 6:01 am

Moira nodded thoughtfully. How cool would it be to study those. Except for the part where they eat me. She turned herself back to the professor and nodded again, this time more definitively. "Thank you Professor Samuels." Moira wondered again how there could be so many, and yet there was so little they could study, considering the whole flesh-eating business. It always came back to that.
When the drawing on the board was completed, it began scurrying around, clicking its fangs. Moira's eyes widened in fear, but she covered herself quickly. Enchanted chalk was amazing, she used it with Edgar during long summer days, but to see such a scary drawing had almost been the end of her.
