What do you guys think of it? What did you like? What did you not like? Who did you adore? Hate? Tell all about what you thought about Homeland.

Yeup my first book in the series and to this day it is still my favorite. I loved Zaknafein and Drizzt and was interested in anything that the Baenre's did. I didn't really dislike anyone except for dumbdumb DeVir wizard...I can't remember his first name...something like Alton I think. I even liked Malice and Vierna...oh wait...I definately DID NOT like Brizza!

I think that it doesn't really matter where you start. If it interests you then start reading it. ^_^

A friend of mine, was driving down the road and saw me so he pulled over. At first he didn't say anything at all.... he just stared like the creepy guy he is. Suddenly, and just as I was about to walk away and pretend like the incident had never happened~ he announced I reminded him of a drow. I blinked a number of times in confusion and asked "...the hell... are you talking about?". His only response was reaching behind the drivers seat and handing me a large pile of well worn books, and the simple phrase "Read the ones on top first."(referring to the dark elf trilogy) he drove away once he was sure I was sufficiently confused.

That's how I stated the series~ unfortunately, aside from the first three books, the rest weren't in order (I'm missing three or four chunks in the middle of the whole series).

You're friend sounds...interesting.

The way I was first introduced to the series was inadvertantly by my neighbor. He's in like 3 books clubs and always gets books each month to read and he sent over 2 boxes of books one time for us to go through. He told my family to do whatever we wanted with the books, but please give them to the library when we're through. He had Icewind Dale Trilogy and the Dark Elf Trilogy in there. I grabbed Icewind and my brother grabbed Dark Elf. I didn't grab Dark Elf cuz it didn't look good (yes yes Don't ever judge a book by its cover, I learned). So my brother read Dark Elf first and me Icewind. We switched and he didn't the like series and I adored it.

We were given the omnibuses of Icewind and Dark Elf. They're sitting in my room on my bookcase right next to me still. That was back in 04? Dunno a few years ago though. No....02 or 03 when I was still in Junior High.

I was introduced through a boyfriend (now ex) who liked the books. I loved the books...I think I might have liked the books more than him smile

A Q Kabuto - I agree with Yagi-Yuki...your friend sounds interesting...to say the least!

I started with Homeland, at least for the Drizzt series. Of R.A. Salvatore's books... Well, let's just say I was really bored in the library at my high school one day, so I looked around on the fantasy rack like, three times. Eventually, my eye was caught by a book that said "Forgotten Realms" on the side, and since I play D&D I decided to look and see how it sounded.

It was "Servant of the Shard". I scanned the shelf again to see if the other two books in the trilogy were there, and I swear I saw BOTH PotWK and RotP, but no, after I finished PotWK I find out that I was hallucinating when I saw RotP. So I ended up buying that recently. After that I decided to start Drizzt, not really realizing what I was getting myself into until it was too late. And now I'm hooked, and have a drive to buy all the books at once. I've only got Exile right now, since my local library happens to only have scattered books, and that's as far as I've read.

I really liked Homeland. It was a great insight into Drow culture, and as a DM it is actually a very valuable resource, to be able to understand a race as I now understand the Drow. I must say I actually liked all of the characters (Maya the least, but that was because she had so little characterization compared to her sisters). I really appreciate the fact that Salvatore's books are not a really low reading level, like what I've been reading (mainly because lately fantasy has been coming out in Young Adult stuff, mostly), and I like the balance between characterization and description and plot. And it really is believable too, (aside from the fact that drow and bugbears and gnolls and such don't actually exist, same goes for magic), unlike some books I've read where things sometimes just don't make sense, or the characters are just too unbelievable. But I guess I'm talking more about Salvatore's books in general, rather than Homeland itself.

Specifically to Homeland, I liked the characterization of Drizzt - all the way from when he was being reared by Vierna to when he left Menzoberranzan. His experiences were believable and it makes sense that they led him to become who he was at the end of the book - it all adds up. I can't really say there was much I didn't like about Homeland. I'm not sure how I feel about Matron Baenre's wrinkles just yet, since what is revealed in Exile about Zin-carla makes her appearance make more sense, but I guess it's just the D&D player in me remembering that elves don't age appearance-wise. Their spirits simply fade from existence as they get older.

I just remembered something else I really liked - the darkvision = infra vision thing. I always just pictured darkvision as being black and white vision, but within areas that are completely darkened (save for any sort of darkness magic). The infra-vision idea is really intriguing, however, and leads to a whole new set of possibilities for role playing a character with darkvision.

I agree with you. Baenre's wrinkles confused me too, but she was supposedly been there for almost a thousand years so I guess the wrinkles were an "added effect" or "bonus" whichever you prefer.

I was really intrigued on how drow hierarchy interacted with each other, much like how slaves and slaver owners acted back during those times (don't want to get the wrong years). But that's just my take on that.

It was my first book...And I still love it, for Todd Lockwood did an amazing job with the cover, it"s one f the best, sadly there are only few that show Drizzt really like an elf.
My edition of Sojourn for exemple...there he looks like a dwarf...*sigh*

But well I am supposed to talk about the story and not just art sweatdrop

I like how Salvatore begins and how he describes the drow...Their social life is interesting too, and all that little feuds.

Well...all f that book is nice...can't really say what I liked best and so on...

One aspect through is, that I hadn't much difficults to understand it, since english is foreign to me, I am always happy to see books that not only native speaker can understand. (I remember my futile attempts at the Hobbit of Tolkien when I was thirteen, luckily my English is much better since then...)

And so I wait hungrily for the Pirate King in paper back mrgreen

sure. But I think many could buy it even if it's in hard cover. I have to import it, since here in Germany are no English versions available...So I have to use Amazon, and my mum doesn't allow me to have hardcovers...'course they are expensive.

It was my senior year in high school 2nd semester and I had just got more into reading. I noticed all these older looking paperbacks sitting on ym dad's book shelf and I asked him what they were and if they were any good. So I started taking all of them to school with me. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy them I had not read much fantasy fiction. My dad assured me that they were the best and I would be hooked. Sure enough I couldn't keep my nose out of those books. I was an office aid for my first period so When I wasn't running back and forth I was reading and ofcourse I started with Homeland first. I was balancing my reading time between my eleven general orders for the navy since i was heading off to bootcamp in june and between the forgotten realms...I got all the way to the first hunter trilogy book before I had to go to bootcamp. so all in all i read all those books in about a two month span. Im a fast reader....when i got into school i was glad to see that our library at my A school on base carried the hunter triology!!!!! I was able to read the rest of the books and was very happy. Now i have the orc king and i let my dad borrow it since i got the hardback and it was 30 bucks....I happy my dad had me read the books!!
