Okay, I'm sure you've all heard it said -- when a lot of people hear that you're writing fantasy, they instantly assume that whatever your story is, it's riddled with cliches and lame plot devices. Personally, I'm sick of it. I write more than just fantasy/SF, but I hate those comments nonetheless. So, I know this game has existed several other places before, but why not bring it here too?
The basic idea is that one person posts something that is generally considered a standard fantasy/SF cliche, and the next person twists that cliche into something that is (hopefully!) significantly more interesting. Once you reply though, be sure to post another cliche in that same post! Otherwise, the next person will be stuck.
To start: The MC is an unlikely hero, chosen by destiny to complete a seemingly impossible quest.

...only to find that he really wasn't the hero and the prophecy was meant for somebody else but got mixed up in the mail.
The One Twu Wub is pathetic and weak and requires the hero to save him/her.

Only to find the hero is equally pathetic and they end up in the care of the enemy, whom they decide are not all that bad, but need nice hot, lye filled baths.
A teenage boy finds an egg that looks remarkably like that from a rare dragon.

...but it turns out to be an egg from Farmer Phil's favorite prize-winning hen. Luckily, Phil is so grateful that he is willing to give our hero a two dollar reward. Ah, riches.
The good guys must find a way to destroy an Artifact of Uber-Doom.

Only to discover that the Artifact of Uber-Doom has already been used against them by the awesome villain who has more than a fraction of a brain.
All villains always wear black and reveals his/her nefarious plans to the hero because the hero is in a position where he/she "cannot escape".

The plan the villain reveals actually belongs to his nemesis, so that when the hero escapes, he'll, instead of foiling his enemy's plan, actually be doing all his work for him.
The handsome, cocky rogue, who is initially only in it for the money, eventually discovers the true meaning of friendship while traveling with his companions on a long and dangerous journey.

The person the rogue finds "true friendship" with along the adventure with is actually only in it for the money and robs him blind, taking all his possessions, including the ring from Grandma! :O
The main heroine is always a rebellious (sp?) young woman who runs away from home.

Only to find herself traveling with her mother, a meek and subservient woman who has a strong hand with her children.
The hero becomes disillusioned when he stumbles upon the truth of his religion.

But then it turns out he is wrong and his religion is right after all.
The heroes are being oppressed by the evil Empire, and must rise up against the authorities, winning in the end and bringing peace to all.

but destroying the authorities is a bad idea because now the country has no laws nor police and it falls into chaos, and it's all the heroes' fault.
A young prodigy is good at everything and seemingly has no flaws, except an enemy who wants to destroy him.

when an even more talented person appears on the scene and he happily retires as his enemy(the local butcher) turns his eyes on this new adversary.
The main character is stuck in a life of poverty when a mage finds that he/she is highly talented.

...but during training, he blows something up and is kicked out of Mage school, thus leaving the bad guy to carry out his plans in peace.
The good guy proposes to the girl and they plan a huge white, wonderful wedding despite being in the middle of a war.

He was an ordinary boy who found that he had great powers band by the government.
