I recently entered this poem in the Reflections program at my school, but I only won because I was the only one that entered. Yeah, I know it's long but please tell me what you think:
What the World Has Come To
Two toddlers are sitting
They have only one toy
The girl picks it up
It’s snatched by the boy
The girl pulls his hair
The boy bites her hand
She uses her nails
Like she’s digging in sand
They both grab the toy
They yank and they pull
Neither let go
Like two stubborn bulls
They don’t know what they’re doing
To that poor little thing
They just want to posses it
They don’t care of its well-being
A final cry’s given
The girl did succeed
She got the toy
With her strength and her greed
The little boy looks
At the toy he’d had
Then he starts to cry
It looked so sad
The little girl sees
What they’ve done to the toy
She starts to cry
Like the little boy
Two little toddlers
They had only one toy
They fought and destroyed it
The girl and the boy
They both have no comfort
They both are to blame
If no fighting took place
They’d both have no shame
If they’d only been kind
And shared the poor thing
They’d have a whole toy
And not scratches that sting
Now look at the world
What do you see?
Are they fighting like children
Over small, silly things?
The way I see it
The world’s like the toy
Will the people destroy it
Like the girl and the boy?
Something we’ve learned
From this little rhyme
When you fight over something
It’s destroyed in no time
If you just compromise
And learn how to share
We can keep the world whole
And as a bonus, we care
