Yeah, but I don't know why you would be expecting books that people read for entertainment. I'm sure you have a list that includes books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Invisible Man, As I Lay Dying, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, In Cold Blood, The Scarlet Letter, Lies My Teacher Told Me, etc. Classics, actual literature... You know... The kind with deeper meanings and allusions in it where the author has thoughtfully written it in itself of it being accidental.

So is alot of Jane Austen's works such as Pride & Prejudice, etc. At least, that's what I can recall from my recent reading of Twilight. It just goes to show that Bella was into the classics.

It all really depends on the school and its theme I suppose. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was on my reading list back in 6th grade. It's just that Twilight is a really easy read... Like... Your school wouldn't assign you a comic book, would it?

It's not really that surprising. As much as we all love Twilight, it does not have much, if any, literary merit.
My suggestion is this: if you can't read Twilight, read something that is related to Twilight. It makes it much more interesting if there is any link at all to Twilight. For example, try Wuthering Heights, or Pride and Prejudice, or The Merchant of Venice (is this a play? I'm not sure.). If any of those books are on your list, of course.
