Hey Mrs. Goober you should extend on this with some diagrams and stuff.

So Anyways. I know for one I got my first (and only, for now) done on my left shoulder blade, I almost fell asleep, there was almost no pain at all. But places like the ribs can leave even the burlyist men crying. this may concern you when you get a tattoo. The other thing to consider is "Where is my tattoo best placed?" Well, if it's something you want to have people see then tattoos are best placed on your forearms (these are called sleeves). Why? Because, if you have slightly longer sleeved T-shirt you'll still be able to see them, the other best place is on the neck, even though it's pretty painful it's probly going to be the most reconised spot, seeing how everyone talks to each other's faces and all.

I'm hoping Mrs. Goober will continue on this.

A challenge huh? So, you want me to continue on this subject. Well, I think the best place is on the foot. It can be seen easily or hidden easily which ever is needed or desired at the time. But, it is one of the most painful places and the nerviest {is that even a word}, meaning the nerves are so close to the surface, that your foot jumps uncontrollably and you just can't help it. I good artist can deal, a bad artist and you're screwed! xp I like the inside wrist area too. Another painful place, but very attractive and visable. Just always remember to be careful in placement because not every boss out there is going to appreciate fine art! So, Goober, how did I do? razz

of the tattoos that i have, the three that hurt the least were: the one on the back of my neck (however, if you tense up it does hurt a little bit), the inside of my wrist (which surprised me because my skin is so thin there that you can actually see my veins), and on the backside of my hips at waist level (i'll admit that i do have some small love handles and that probably helped, it more or less just tickled). the worst one was between my shoulder blades at the top of my spine. this one actually made my upper back muscles tense and sore for a couple days after it was done.

Generally tattooing over bones will hurt the most.

As for placement, it's important to make sure that the tattoo fits to the contours of your body. I've seen some really good tattoo's that were ruined by poor placement choices. (This applies more to large tattoos rather then smaller ones.)
You can probably book a consultation or a meeting with the artist of your choice to talk about placement and other details of the tattoo. I always advise that people do that if they're unsure about where to put their tattoo.

I've only had one tattoo, so I can't personally share my experiences with different pain and such. But everyone should be aware that different people have different pain thresholds. So what might hurt me a lot, might not hurt someone else at all, and vice versa.

It's also a good idea to avoid putting a tattoo in a place that will fade quickly. Generally the hands and feet are bad for this because they are used so often.
My mother has a dragonfly on the top of her foot and it looked like crap after a few months simply because it was rubbing against her shoes so often. Once she switched to wearing flats or flip flops it wasn't a problem anymore. So, just keep that in mind also.

I know someone who was tattooed right on their ear.
They said that it tickled.

But behind the ear, as in not actually on it? Yeah, I can vouch for that one. It hurts, though not as bad as I had expected it to.

When I got mine on my foot, I immediately stopped wearing shoes and wear flip flops only or go barefoot. In fact I'm in favor of shoes being outlawed, but that's another subject. rofl So, I agree with the shoe thing ruining a tattoo and I wasn't taking a chance. My tattoo looks great and it's been 3 years. I do put lotion on it and sunblock, even though I'm not as diligent as I use to be on either and it still looks good.
