Does anybody play by ear? I've been working on it for about two weeks, with a jethro tull piece (they have their american tour this month, but they're not stopping anywhere in the midwest! not even chicago!) anyway, does anyone have any tips for the newb?

Break it down into phrases. Learn the piece phrase by phrase. Then begin piecing them together one by one. Play the first phrase and the second phrase. Then add the third. If you mess up, go back and do it again. So on and so forth.

I'm still horrible at it, but that's what I was taught when we did some tune learning in Jazz band.

I do it a lot in marching band. There are only three flutes in my band and one of us learns the music like in a day. While the other two of us are seem to have the worst memory. So...when we turn our music around to play by memory, I follow her. I've gotten good at it over the years...though my memory still takes forever.

I agree with Farferalloie. Keep the phrases short, and don't worry get exasperated if you have to play it over and over to get it right. I would suggest trying to play with the piece if it isn't too fast of a tempo.

I'm pretty good at playing by ear. Its weird because I can hear something and then I pretty much dont think about it and let my fingers do the work. If I think about it, I'm ok at it but I mess up a lot.

If possible, sing the pitches to a tuner to find what notes you're supposed to be playing (I call this the Ear-Helper method). This helps build pitch recognition (so many songs that I've tried start on A). Otherwise, the "break-it-down" method would probably be best.

I generally just start plying whatever's stuck in my head at the time, and I'm generally right the first time, so...

I really don't know what to tell you, except that breaking it down usually works for the harder stuff for me.

I don't think I'm being any help, am I...?
