This is something a friend and I feel different about, i HATED the shading. That make me jump too many times to count, which is not good.
The lady actually went out of the line, so she had to go back and make the lines thicker. It doesn't look bad, but i know its like that because i kept squirming n.n
I'm unsure whats different though, like they use different utensils correct? I'm not educated about all the mechanics of a tattoo gun x3
* Which is worse?
* Are you a squirmer?
* Have they ever had to fix a tat because you moved?

Not a squirmer, but I am a twitcher, lol. There's not a lot I can do about that involuntary stuff. So far I haven't had to have one fixed because of it.
I always thought the outline is the worst, by the time they get to the shading I am somewhat numb. Yeah there have been exceptions (like when having them in multiple settings, outline first then shading on a later date), but on an average, the outline bothered me most.

From my experience, I'd have to say that the outline is the worst, followed closely by solid black. I don't really have that much shading to compare, but I hope to be able to compare it soon. lol About the squirming...I don't. I twitch a little, but that's all. The artist doing my newest one even makes fun of me for NOT squirming. He says it's like I don't have any pain receptors. sweatdrop

The outlining was worse, for sure. And lucky for me, my whole tattoo was practically outlining. There was only a few light purple shadows and some added in white.
But, it wasn't so bad over all. My tattoo only took 45 minutes. And I didn't twitch once. I just.... made really amusing faces that were caught on camera. xD

Well, for me the full black was the worst. But apart from that, the shading was always worse for me. There's always a lot more of that. xd
I still love getting them, though.

For my upper back piece, the outline was definitely the worst. I almost passed out! I wanted to do it in two sittings, but the outline only took about 20 minutes, and they convinced me that the shading wouldn't be as bad. So I bit the bullet and went ahead with it, and they were right.

Solid black/shading. The distinction between shading and solid black is somewhat arbitrary since most of the time that's going to be done with a magnum needle the same as for shading. Then again, I've had friends tell me that they got solid black done with liner needles, which makes me twitch in pain just thinking about it.
I usually tell people who ask that a liner feels like getting a needle dragged through your skin, and a shader feels like getting a cigarette dragged across your skin.

I think the outlining is rough, but my artist, Fish, has a heavy hand, so shading sometimes can be rough too. I just hate the burning part! My foot jumped around alot when I got it done, but he didn't make any mistakes and said it wasn't my fault, I couldn't control it, it was just the nerves being hit while he was doing it. So, as a rule, I am not a squirmer unless nerves are being hit. biggrin

The outline hurt the worse for me. The shading wasn't too bad [in comparision].

ok, i'll answer question by question:
* Which is worse? honestly, I think that shading hurts a tad bit more than outlining... mind you the tats I have right now are solid black (except for a little color on my first one)... But I know this'll sound weird, but I actually thought for some reason the color hurt more than the black... mind you it coulda just been cuz the color was the last part the artist did.
* Are you a squirmer? no. i sit still. the only time i move is if i cramp and both the artists that have worked on me pull the gun back quick enough not to make a mistake.
* Have they ever had to fix a tat because you moved? see above
