Now, you have your fresh new tattoo, and you want to take good care of it! From this point on, your artist is not responsible for any infection or problems you may have with your tattoo if you don't take proper care of it. It is very important that you follow these guidelines. A really beautiful tattoo can turn into a disaster if the proper aftercare is not taken.
The Bandage:
A sterile piece of Plastic wrap/ gauze is placed over your new tattoo. This is to help protect the wound from any dust or germs you might encounter throughout the rest of your day and also gives your pores a chance to close up a little.. When your arrive home remove the bandage. There is not really any specific time to leave it on anywhere from 1–2 hours is safe.
NEVER RE-WRAP YOUR TATTOO!
Once you have removed the bandage, wash your tattoo with mild anti bacterial soap and warm water, use your finger tips to gently massage any excess ink and blood and plasma off your skin. Rinse your skin gently by allowing the water to glide across the tattoo but not beating on it. Once you have rinsed off all the soap, pat your tattoo dry using a towel or paper towel. GENTLY!
Apply Ointment:
Now that your new tattoo is cleaned up and your pores are settling down, it is time to take care of your skin and help it heal as quickly as possible.
Apply a thin layer of tattoo ointment 3-4 times a day.. This is a personal preference and differs from person to person. You want to promote healing! Too much ointment will clog pores and could also collect bacteria, too little ointment and your skin will get very dry.
If your tattoo it itchy apply ointment. Do not scratch or pick at it as you could tear the new skin which is protecting your ink!
Types Of Ointment: Webber vitamin E cream (or any vitamin E or A&D cream) Tattoo Goo and any aftercare you can get from your artist to help it heal
DO NOT use Vaselin or hand lotion
you can use hand lotion after at least 5 days and it is unscented and mild like vaseline's intensive care

There's also tattoo sunblock. It apparently will protect your tattoo from the sun and such, with out fading it.
I've never used it personally, but I know people who say it work. Though I'm slightly skeptical, I don't doubt that a regular sunscreen would work much to the same effect.
Anyone else heard of this? (It's probably a gimick, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.)

I have always used A & D ointment for my tattoos. I am getting some work done and I saw that in the advice here it say A & D Cream, does that mean the newer zinc oxide cream or the original ointment?
I'll go ahead and use the original until I know for sure. Thanks.

The original is what I've always used. It's what my artist recommends. No need to go fancy. smile

I use Tattoo Goo.
the salve works very good, and smells nice too. It makes healing very fast, and makes it feel better. I dont know how the other products work, but I'm getting some in the mail.
Here are the ingredients to the salve and their purpose, found on the website.
Olive Oil: a mild lubricant that softens and moisturizes the skin
Beeswax: natural base used instead of petroleum or lanolin products
Cocoa Butter: soothes burns and abrasions
Wheat Germ Oil: relieves inflammation of skin abrasions, burns, and wounds
Tocopheryl Acetate & Tocophery (Vitamin E): heals burns and skin abrasions
Lavender Oil: heals minor burns and relives inflammation and itching
Sunflower Oil: skin moisturizer
Rosemary Extract: skin softening agent that helps prevent infection
D&C Green 6: non-staining, food grade coloring
I also use unscented Lubriderm for sensitive skin when I cant find the goo.

NO ALL OF YOU ARE WRONG. A&D Draws out the ink. All of those lotions and s**t are ok but they are noth the best. Buy vaseline aloe fresh hydrating. its a green bottle and has a blue lid. thats the best. and also if you buy an aloe plant, that will help the best. Use the ooze inside. That heals way faster and you can't overdo it. you can put the whole plant on you and it will not ******** it up. thats the best way. stay away from a&d. Im an artists i'd know. Please pm me

Please don't yell that all of us are wrong .. regardless of you being an artist or what not we are getting these from our artists many of them have MANY years of experience for instance i have friends that have been doing it for 15-30 years and WayneZinok's family owns a shop
I have been using my aftercare routine for years now and i have not had a single problem with my ink and my ink doesn't bleed out or fade out .. so please before you start yelling try to suggest this is for suggestions not for yelling at people to tell them that they are wrong and your right
You could simply have stated "Another good product that works for clients of mine is Vaseline Aloe Fresh Hydrating" Then continued with the stuff about the aloe plant Granted not all of us are artists But ALOT of us are friends with artists and such so shoving it in our face "I'm an artist I'd know" Is really rather rude.
So Please like I have stated before suggest .. this is a suggestion forum for ways to take care of tattoo's
Thank you
