Usually, when a spell calls for use of a certain tool, I can never get a hold of it. What I end up doing is investigating what effect the tool would have on me personally, and then substitute the item for something else that would generate that kind of response from me. It seems to work awefully well for me. How does everyone else feel about using tools in casting?

substitution is usually better than what the original steps call for....... but why don't you try MAKING your own tools????? like a pentacle disk can be EASILY made from cardboard and markers....... plus making your own tools leaves the tools with a bit of extra energy from you ^.^........

I am firm in my opinion that people should write their own spells. How will one know if a spell will work for their subconscious mind if they don't write it themselves?
I rarely have tools for my spells. It's usually just a candle, or a piece of string or cord. Maybe a bowl of water, maybe a picture, yada yada. I'm firmly a witch rather than a magician and I don't see the point in all those tools. My tools are mostly religious objects, not craft ones. I do often use simple tools, usually just one in a specific spell, because I find that doing something physically or having an object there helps to focus my mind.

The only times I've ever cast a spell has been with candles. Or perhaps you could call it a spell when I prayed to a god or goddess for something. I don't know much about tools or herbs, let alone have them, so I can't really use them. I usually don't have a reason to cast a spell, either. Or if I do, I don't know what to do. sweatdrop That's why I used candles and a small prayer. They're easy to use and I'm fairly confident with them.

I strongly agree with the idea of making your own tools. A druidic exercise had required me to create 4 tools - one for each element - and a box to contain them all in, and I was closer to those tools than anything else. I think that's probably why I'm so prone to substitute as well. Then again, there have been occassions where modifying an idea to my personality created... undesirable effects. But you live you learn. [edit] I think the undesirable effects came because of personality requirements that my personality wasn't strong enought to meet yet.
Sometimes I find myself in such a hurry to cast that I just use music as a tool, and I bound up all the emotive energy that I need for what I'm doing and I focus it all into my desire. But even doing that takes some time. But MAN is it INTENSE! From works I've read of others, everyone comes to substitute a wand or sword for their own pointing finger.

I write my own spells, rituals, rites ect. I have made about half of my tools.( I made my pentacle out of ash twigs and a willow branch) I use most of my tools when I cast with my sister who tends to be a bit more ceremonial than I am on my own. My usual motto is to keep it simple. Depending on what I am doing I will use no tool other than my mind or just practical tools like a bolline, mortar and pestal, a pot and wooden spoon.
