I think the best medieval armor is the chain mail and the silk armor from Japan.

I don't see how effective that would be... maybe if it was layered, but that's still alot of layers. Ofcourse, there were African tribes who made armour out of human hair that could stop arrows, so maybe it's not so unbelievable.

Actually, it has been proven that Silk can stop a bullet, look it up on youtube under Myth busters ^^

I'm tryin' to make chainmail, sans the usual forging process required. I saw a guide where you can use wire to form the links, or buy the rings, but I haven't seen much else. Any advice?

Umm... Metal coat hangers? Cut them into little pieces then bend them with some pliers, atleast that's what I'd try. That, or I'd find somewhere that sells chains and buy enough for the armour. Then you'd have to cut some of the links (like with the coat hanger approach) and plier them together. Or weld them instead of pliers.
But, then again, I'm only guessing. Why you looking to make chainmail, anyway?

Because chainmail is awesome, and there's a surprising amount of things you can do with it. Especially for profit.
Tried metal coat hangers, but they're too difficult to work with. For me, anyway, but I'm a weak b*****d.

Hmm... I see... Personally, if I were to make any kind of armour, I'd go for plate armour. But I've got access to the right tools and materials needed. I think a friend of mine tried to make chainmail, though. Can't recall what he did, but I'm pretty sure he gave up on it.

Plate armour is too heavy for my build, and the materials needed to make it aren't really capable of being acquired by a fifteen year-old with little money. xD

True, though all I can get is scrap aluminum. But still, I get it in like big sheets, so a finished suit probably wouldn't look too different from a steel one.
But I can appreciate chainmail. It does it's job, afterall. I've heard of some people using craft wire to make it, and when I asked my friend earlier, he said he used an electrical wire.
