Just wondering, does everyone here beleive in the big bang or are some of you religious or do you beleive that the universe was always here?
Also do you think the universe will end at one point because of a big chill, big rip, or the big crunch?

I'm fairly religious but I prefer a scientific approach to creation so, yes, I believe in the big bang. If this universe does end because of a big whatever, then imagine how many universes there have been before ours! How many are to come!

There's the theological side which might keep you from accepting the Big Bang but since I am not religious I have to go and say that I believe but also keep my doubts... not because of religion but because of scientific thinking... that is... all "correct" theories are simply theories which haven't been proven wrong yet. In other words, nothing is an absolute fact and could still be proven wrong.

Well all in all if you believe in it or not it is just a theory. But as for me I took astronomy a couple of months ago before I graduated and we came up(the students & our teacher) with alot of theories of how we could have come to be. But I think along the lines of the whole string theory but thats just me. ninja

Razor-Bladed Sprinkles yep and altho i know a lot about astronomy, i dont know enough to decide how it will end. i dont really know that the Big Crunch is, so someone please explain it? and the Big Chill is that all the stars will die, right? Well what will happen, from what I've heard from alot of researchers, is that our stars will die out and/or get swallowed by black holes. Lucky for you and everyone else of our generation we will all be dead sweatdrop . None the less I bet they'll be a period where everything will grow dim and probably be pitch black BUT I do belive it'll start up again since stars are made of other stars so its bound to make a come back biggrin I hope I helped!

Religion has nothing to do with science I don't see why they need to be at war with each other in this day and age. Their may have been a time in human history where we used religion to explain what we saw, but that time has ended. I'm not in any sense a religious person, but I feel like people can believe in the possibility of god wile at the same time respecting science.

In fact science answers the question "How?" and religion answers the question "Why?". And yeah the Big Bang is only a theory (it might be right, or it might be wrong), but its the most plausible and realistic one at the moment, so it makes sense to believe in it. It answers the question "how the universe started?", but it doesn't answer the question "why???", and that's where religion comes in for the religious people (or at least should, in my opinion...) This is how I see it.

Actually if you stop and consider, the Big Bang doesn't help an atheist in his position, as most holy books state the universe was "created." That being said, I'm not religious, and I don't see it as supporting any particular religious doctrine.

I am religious but I see no reason that that should interfere with science. I am a Christian and the Bible tells us that God created the universe, not that it was there all along. I do believe that the Big Bang happened. It is my personal point of view that God caused the explosion from which the universe was formed. Furthermore, I'm not sure about the universe ending, but the Bible tells us that the first world will be destroyed with water (think Noah's ark) and the second world (the one we live in) will be destroyed in fire.
