The World

Dragon's Maw is quite expansive, with many forests covering the lower half. These forests are home to many villages and towns. The time period is somewhat of a stereotypical medieval era, but one with magic. The Red Kingdom rules most of the land, though there are plenty of "outsiders" who live outside the law and protection of the government. Kage can find each other throughout the land, many roaming free and finding a place suitable to their liking-- whether it be hot, cold, shady or rainy.

Major Cities

Red Kingdom (3) Centuries ago, kingdoms dotted the face of Dragon's Maw in every shape and variety possible. There were pirate kings and desert kings and a north queen of the snow. Unfortunately, one kingdom, the Red Kingdom, slowly covered the entire land in tendrils of corruption, fake treaties, and tactical assaults to cut off food supplies. Within a short decade, every kingdom lie in shambles as the powerful Red King and Queen became rulers of the entire land, and taxed everyone therein. They built their gigantic empire within the thinnest part of the forests, the spot between the dense woods and the flat plains. They built giant towers to see an enemy coming from miles away. They built farms and dug lakes inside their walls and built trails leading out to the River settlements, where they traded and taxed and protected the commonfolk there.

The Kingdom itself has a magnificent castle in the middle, followed by the ornate homes and office buildings of the rich and powerful. The next ring around the castle is filled with bustling shops and homes of the middleclass. The outermost ring is also the largest, filled to the brim with commonfolk wanting desperately to live where it's safe. Each ring is surrounded by a wall, getting progressively larger as they near the center. The last wall, separating the Kingdom from the lonely empty lands, is no more than 10 feet tall. The walls and castle are all made of thick gray stone, but the details are always painted a blood red.

All of the greatest advancements in technology, medicine, and magic were conducted here, although magic is of course highly contained, measured, and unavailable to most commonfolk. As for magic as terrible as Kage summoning, the kingdom has an iron grip on the land. The government placed bounties on the heads of the resurfaced Neverlin cultists, but most people fear them too much and it has yet to quell the uprising. Kage are considered horrible abominations and are killed on sight.

Whitewolf (6) Within the forest settlements, unburdened by the taxes (and thus, protection) of the Red Kingdom, sits Whitewolf. Named for the patch of rare white birch trees and the ever-prowling wolves outside, this major forest hub attracts many visitors. It has a strong barter industry, with people trading goods for goods rather than using Red coins from the castle. People here accept Kage, though they do not openly trust all of them. Many Kage shouldn't be trusted, after all.

Well-behaved Kage may enjoy the wonders of human civilization here, things they thought they would never see again in this lifetime.

River's Edge (8) Although the entire span of land following the Red River is packed with people, most of the "buildings" are heavy-duty tents and temporary log cabins. Generally, the furthest people from the river are just visitors and nomads, not staying for too long. The actual river's edge, however, is home to thick throngs of people selling their wares. From fresh fish to incense to rare spices and tanned hides, everything here is regulated and taxed by Red Kingdom officials. Magical items are banned outright and confiscated if found.

As a huge territory of the Red Kingdom, Kage must tread carefully here, preferably on the borders where more tolerant individuals may live.

Ruins of Noreali (13)

Smaller Cities

Dog's Head City (9) This grim little village has poked itself onto the map, deep within Demon's Watch. The dim wastelands made a perfect place for rogues, vagabonds, escaped prisoners, mercenaries, and general unwelcome filth to collect and thrive. Murder and theft are commonplace-- such is the risk of living in such a dangerous place. The village itself is a ghost town of decades past, its wooden buildings and structures miraculously still standing throughout dust storms, droughts, tornadoes, and war.

Forest Settlements (6)
Many different communities sprung up within the comforts of the thick forests down south. Some choose to be taxed and protected by the kingdom, while some smaller ones choose to hide out and follow their own laws. These villages are the ones being ransacked by the Neverlin.

Neverlin Base (7) This is where the new Neverlin cultists reside, their village a magically-built and magically-protected fortress. They follow no rules when it comes to magic, making them dangerous and wicked. Although their numbers aren't daunting, they have many dark Kage under their control. Approach with extreme caution.

Riverline Settlements (10) A farming community that flourished beside the fertile lands that follow the Red River. They follow the law and are protected by the Red Kingdom, as well as taxed.

General Areas

The North (1) Aptly named, the North is the coldest, upper-most section of the land. The trek into the North begins with dropping temperatures, snowfall, tundra, and then finally intense blizzards and winds. If one makes it past these tribulations, the cliffside at the top of the world overlooks a vast, majestic sea and the sky is always a gradient of blue, purple, and pink. Frequent aurora borealises also roam the sky, making this the favorite spot of spiritual Kage to migrate to.

Rainlands (2) This gray area is constantly under assault by gusty winds and relentless rainfall. Despite the wind, a soft fog also fills the area, making it difficult to see too far into the distance. The ground is covered in thick stone slabs, always slick and muddled with puddles. No foliage or trees grow here, unable to grow without soil or sun. Vigilant weeds and mushrooms creep out from the cracks between rocks, but it isn't enough to keep anyone or anything well-fed.

Grasslands (4) This is the general name given to the grassy areas that slither around important landmarks in Dragon's Maw. The soil is rich and earthy and easily grows flowers, small trees, and shrubs. A pleasant breeze keeps the pastoral scents afloat.

Blackgrime Lake (5) The huge round lake to the east. It is a popular destination as the water is actually crystal clear despite its name.

Red River (8) The largest river that begins in a large lake and runs all the way down south, forks, and empties into the ocean. Named for the Red Kingdom.

Demon's Watch (9) A gray, barren wasteland filled with skeletons, black dead tree trunks, and charred remnants of memories long since past. This land was torn apart by the war long, long ago that secure the Red Kingdom's place of power. Decrepit building frames still stand in the midst of the gray dusty air, a haunting reminder of what people are capable of doing to each other. Recently, Demon's Watch has been used as a everything from secret ritual grounds, to graveyards, and to short-lived houses for vagabonds and outlaws.

Fare Island (13) The large island on the right, with a sizable river cutting into it and long, sandy beaches. Only people able to cross the long panels of water can reach the islands, making them a bit empty and unknown to the general populace. However, a darker-tanned breed of humans lives within the jungles and oasises here, unspoiled by Kage and unknowing what they even are.

Bull Island (12) The large island on the left, with the sizable pond. Just as unknown as Fare Island, rumors suggest that terrible things live here.

Sites of Interest

Amlight Catacombs (11) What was once the largest church and spiritual center in Dragon's Maw now lies in ruin, a mere shadow of what it once was. Burnt to the ground by angry mobs more interested in killing suspected mages and witches than "saving" them, the church is now completely abandoned and defunct. Below the Amlight church, however, is a giant network of catacombs filled with coffins of deceased spiritual leaders. The earth is moist and cool below, providing refuge from storms and sun. The air is very calm and peaceful.

The Kage

Although the Kage are a unified breed of monster, summoned by the original Neverlin Mages, they come in a variety of different types. Some are more physical, and some are more magical, but all live off of life energy.

User Image

Neverlin Kage
Abilities:
They are average in all aspects and generally don't have much strength or magic to them aside from sharp claws, horns, and defensive spines.
Temperament:
The soul that gives your Kage life influences it, which means they can have extremely diverse personalities. Neverlin kage are varied, and can come from humans or animals. Their personality can range broadly from mild-mannered to bite-your-head-off to horndog, depending on the soul that lives inside them.
Reactions:
As Neverlin are the most common breed of Kage, named after the original Mages who first summoned them, they are the most widely-known and widely-hated by the Red Kingdom and anyone who lives within it or its territories. Generally, they are despised and will be killed as soon as possible.
Size:
Full-grown Neverlin Kage are the size of large dogs, perhaps the size of German Shepherds or wolves. They can be larger, however-- elders especially are even larger. Females are generally the same size, though often weigh less. Weight can depend on environment, diet, life energy consumption, etc.
Age:
Kage in the wild die young due to the hostile environments, but your Kage is free to live forever if they can supply themselves with life energies. Generally, they only have the energy to live 20 years at most.

Priestly Kage
Abilities:
Priestly Kage may rarely have the ability to using healing magic, and their blood can be used to treat poison (though the opportunity to do so rarely arises). They hardly have to drain any life energy from those around them.
Temperament:
Priestly kage usually have very innocent or 'good' souls, though not necessarily through religion despite its name. They can range from soft and gentle, to heroic, to preachy, shy, apathetic, or a myriad of other personalities. All in all, they are generally good creatures who wish to do right in this world.
Reactions:
Some Kage have a calming effect about them, which seems like a magical ability to some. They will always prefer peace over violence when possible, and rarely fight back with the humans that seek to attack them.
Size:
Priestly Kage are generally just a bit larger than Neverlin.
Age:
Priestly Kage never seem to age, despite their lack of hunger for life energy.

Hell Kage
Abilities:
Very gifted Hell Kage will have power over fire magic, though mostly from breathing it rather than casting spells. Their bodies are very powerful.
Temperament:
Hell kage are rumored to have the souls of demons that were summoned by the darkest rituals, but it's unconfirmed if that's the truth. All that's known is that they generally exhibit the worst traits-- rage, hatred, and a deep thirst for blood and ripping the life energy from warm flesh. Hell Kage can be rude, evil, ruthless, cunning and malicious, but they can also be very passionate.
Reactions:
Mostly anything that runs into a Hell Kage will decide flight over fight.
Size:
Hell Kage are larger than the norm and have very little body fat.
Age:
Hell Kage are known to starve to death if they wander out so far they cannot find anything to consume the life energy off of or eat. If they die, it's because of starvation or a particularly nasty fight.

Spiritual Kage
Abilities:
Spiritual Kage all have a certain level of foresight, being able to glimpse into the future or read another Kage's soul. This is a common ability, although it can range in strength from weak to extremely strong (which is extremely rare). Some can even slip between the spirit world and this world, usually while sleeping.
Temperament:
Spiritual kage require psychic and magical human souls. They are usually cool, calm, and collected. They can seem cold and distant occasionally, or slightly holier-than-thou.
Reactions:
Spiritual Kage have a calming effect like Priestly Kage, though it's from an automatic attempt at soothing minds around them. It won't work on everyone, but many people enjoy it. Spiritual Kage are the most accepted Kage in the land and are often valued for their predictions and fortune-telling.
Size:
Spiritual Kage are the same size as Neverlin, but a bit heavier (both extra fat to keep warm and also the heavy fur coat).
Age:
They seem to last forever, as they rarely pick fights and they can often see certain doom in their future and avoid it.

Cemetery Kage
Abilities:
They don't have much strength in their old bones but their bodies do levitate with a bit of magical residue, if that counts as an ability.
Temperament:
Most Cemetery Kage's brains are mush, so they don't generally have diverse personalities or intelligent conversations. There are deviations from the norm, but there's no telling whether they will be happy or vengeful.
Reactions:
Due to their rotting and disfigured bodies, most people and other Kage will avoid Cemeteries like the plague.
Size:
They are smaller than Neverlin, and obviously weigh very little.
Age:
As they are already dead, almost nothing can 'kill' a Cemetery Kage-- short of cutting it into tiny, tiny pieces or throwing it in a vat of acid.

Temporal Kage
Abilities:
Temporal Kage are strong, capable of flight, and in rare instances are able to control time and partake in light arcane magic.
Temperament:
The Temporals are usually arrogant and haughty due to their immense power, and are known to be greedy and hoard like a dragon. For the most part, they are highly intelligent but also enjoy picking on weaker Kage.
Size:
Temporals are larger than other Kage and are mostly muscle as well.
Age:
Temporals can live for a long, long, long, long time.

Cerberus Kage
Abilities:
Aside from their ridiculous strength, Cerberus Kage almost always have magical abilities.
Temperament:
Cerberus are either batshit insane, excruciatingly violent or just plain mentally twisted. You'd be insane too if you had three different souls vying for control of your body. Whether all three souls are evil or not, just the pain of living like that will drive it crazy.
Reactions:
Run. RUN.
Size:
Ceberus Kage are the biggest of all, towering over the other Kage and almost reaching a human male's height while standing on all fours. An elder Cerberus would tower over even humans.
Age:
Not enough Cerberus Kage exist to know if they live short lives or live forever.

Your RP Character

You can choose to roleplay human characters or just your Kage (or both!) The setting is medieval fantasy, meaning professions such as knight, mage, cleric, soldier, cardinal, peasant, etc. exist-- it's open to interpretation and molding to fit what you want to play. Magic exists, if only usable by very intelligent and skilled mages. Unfortunately, the populace at large seems to resent magic and it has become a taboo subject in many cultures. For these reasons, make sure your character/Kage combo is feasible. You are, after all, harboring an unnatural creature. A king's attendant would have to keep it quite a secret, and wouldn't prance his or her Kage about the court!

If you want your human to know magic, you just need a believable backstory. Feel free to PM me your ideas to see if it will work!

If you have a good reason as to why you can summon Kage (learned somehow, hired someone, whatever) then you can RP summoning your Kage. Finding a pre-existing Kage and taking it in as your own is also allowed, as well as literally purchasing one off a Neverlin mage. Characters can have more than one Kage as long as it's not completely unreasonable-- remember that most of them need to consume your life energy, so don't get yourself killed!

Magic System

Magic in this world is used mainly as a tool for destruction. Elemental magic such as fire and lightning can be mastered by mages but it takes many years of practice to make sure one doesn't sear their own flesh off. Most humans hate magic and will use extreme physical force against it if need be. Mages are feared and occasionally loathed. Other forms of magic exist, such as simple arcane spells: levitation, transmogrification, teleporting-- but they are mostly used by old mages who cannot use their tired old bodies anymore.

Kage can very rarely use magic. All Spiritual Kage have an innate psychic sense, and some have steps further such as premonitions, dreamwalking through the spirit world, and mindreading. The most powerful Spiritual Kage will be able to cause headaches and mind blasts. Temporal Kage are rumored to have control over arcane and time magic. Very special Hell Kage can control fire. If you want to know how magical your Kage is, PM me which Kage and I'll let you know. For RP purposes, the info below will suffice for most cases. Your Kage doesn't need to be magical.

Humans can use most spells, but not all at the same time. If you're a cleric, chances are you won't be using fireballs. If you're a mage, you can't be a psychic too. Humans are generally only able to go down certain magical routes though you can mix and match a few.

Types of Magic
Each spell is listed in terms of difficulty. If it says a "special" type of Kage can use it, it means not every Kage can use it. Generally, you must be a very avid RPer or have a very special auctioned Kage. PM me if you wanna know, I don't bite!

Fire
Small fireballs - Palm-sized balls of fire, sparked into existence and able to be flung forward with the mind. (Humans and special Hell Kage may use this)
Breathing fire - Varying sizes of fire, spouted from the mouth. May require recharging in between. (Special Hell Kage and Teratorn may use this)
Large fireballs - Twice as large as the small fireballs. (Humans and D.A.V.E. Kage may use this)
Controlling swaths of fire - Sparking a large amount of fire into existence and controlling its spread. (Advanced mages may use this, and auction-worthy Hell/Cerberus Kage)
Rain of fire - Raining embers and cinders from the sky. Extreme devastation, use with extreme caution and only in dire situations. (Advanced mages, Cerberus Kage, and auction-worthy Hell elders may use this)

Restoration
Cure illness or disease - Glowing hands channel the essence of holy light or pure water [depends on your religion/magic preference/etc.] to heal most illnesses or disease. Fatal illness or disease cannot be cured. (Humans and Priestly Kage may use this)
Calm spirit - Though invisible, it strengthens one's words and enables it to calm a human or Kage from crying, rage, or panic. Doesn't always work, for example: Hell and Cerberus Kage cannot always be calmed. (Humans, Priestly, and Spiritual Kage may use this)
Heal wounds - Glowing hands channel the essence of pure water or holy light to make flesh stitch together or blood recede from bruises. It takes a ton of life energy to heal bad wounds and can truly exhaust or even harm the caster. (Humans and special Priestly Kage may use this)
Holy shields - A faint, glistening bubble that protects the area inside it. It is created using the caster's love and energy and will quickly wear out the person/Kage if held for too long. (Humans and special Priestly Kage may use this)

Mind
Premonitions - The user will never use this on purpose, it's very much passive. Occasionally, glimpses of the future will haunt them-- and it's not guaranteed if they are correct or not! (Humans and Spiritual Kage may use this)
Dreamwalking - The user will occasionally have an out-of-body experience while sleeping, where they can traverse the world and even sometimes slip into the Spirit World in their dreams. (Spiritual Kage may use this)
Mind soothe - Almost like Calm Spirit, a Spiritual Kage can soothe a troubled mind. Whether headache, or anxiety, or any plethora of psychological issues, it can be soothed temporarily. Does not always work on Hell or Cerberus Kage. (Spiritual Kage may use this)
Incur headache - With the power to heal comes the power to destroy. Kage may incur headaches within those they deem it necessary. (Spiritual Kage may use this)
Mindreader - Seasoned psychics may attempt to read minds, though the weak-willed, asleep, or young targets are the easiest to read. (Humans and Spiritual Kage may use this)
Mind blast - Seasoned psychics may take the Incur Headache further and blast an opponent's mind, causing great distress, migraines, depression, anxiety, or confusion. (Powerful Spiritual Kage may use this)
Prophesize - With much greater accuracy, seasoned psychics may begin to tell the future. It takes great skill to decipher truth from fiction. (Humans and Spiritual Kage may use this)
Spiritwalk - After a Spiritual Kage has taken its migration north to see the aurora borealis, it may attempt to control its out-of-body experiences and traverse the Spirit World. (Powerful Spiritual Kage may use this)

Arcane
Magic shields - A glistening blue-ish bubble that is created with pure magical energy. It is very strong against other magic but people or Kage can leap through it. (Humans and Temporal Kage may use this)
Levitation - Make things float. (Humans may use this)
Teleport - Disappear and reappear further away. (Advanced mages and special Temporal Kage may use this)
Arcane blast - A blast of pure magical energy that explodes on impact. (Advanced mages may use this)
Time freeze - Attempts to freeze time for very short periods, though the caster or other powerful mages/Temporal Kage may still move about. (Advanced mages and special Temporal Kage may use this)
Time warp - Very rarely, this spell can be used to slip back and forth between time. (Advanced mages and special Temporal Kage may use this)

Nature
Antivenom - Priestly blood can cure venom, but humans must use magic via their hands to cure it. (Humans and Priestly Kage may use this)
Find water - Draws human to sources of water. (Tribal humans may use this)
Summon rainfall - Summons intense rainfall. (Tribal human mages may use this)
Summon thunderstorm - Summons intense thunderstorm. (Tribal human mages may use this)

Religion

Depending on where a human or Kage lives or was born, different religions will be encountered. Though most people don't take religion too seriously, there are churches or gatherings of all religious kinds.

Monotheism
Places that are under the protection of the Red Kingdom worship a single God. He is the creator of everything, and to them, Kage are an abomination and summoning them is the ultimate sin. Churches speckle the Red Kingdom and rules are actively enforced that no other religions may be practiced inside the city walls. Along with this, magic is frowned upon by the Church, but magic holds far too much power and wealth within the city to be silenced by it.

Gods of Nature
More tribal or traditionally nature-related cultures, such as select Forest Settlement towns, WhiteWolf, and Fare Island will worship deities of nature. Arylor, the God of Fire, Ohgren, the God of Earth, Luminesca, the Goddess of Water. Many demi-gods exist for other natural occurrences, such as lightning, blizzards, and hurricanes. Many practitioners of the religion of nature consider people capable of magic to be blessed by their Gods and are generally forced into religious positions within temples.
