I was thinking the other day about the book, "The Secret".
I have only read the introduction so far, and it talks about how you can attain anything so long as you believe and concentrate all your thoughts on that thing. My BF says it's BS, but I really got thinking about it. Before that, my motto had always been "If you Believe, Magick is Real" - still is, really.

What I mean by this is, the essence of magick is that you must believe in it in order for it to work. "The Secret" also added to this with the "concentrate on what you want" part. It's not just concentrating your thoughts, but your energy. Energy, which is what makes up the elements, what makes up things, people, souls, the world. If you concentrate your energy, you can move other energy, right? You can control it, and basically by wishing and by hoping for something with all your might you could perform magick. In a way. It is a part of it, in my thinking. There are different parts of magick, as we all know, but this is what I think is the underlying ...what's the word?... theme? idea? Oh darn it, you know what I mean! The base for magick.

Of course, I'm only new to the whole practising magick thing, despite being a philosopher my entire life. So that's why I must post my theory here and see how much of it is right/true/possibly true. What do you all think?

I agree that you must believe in your ability to change things. You must have confidence, or there is no chance of it working at all. When things don't turn out the way one expects, usually one needs only be patient, and things will come to manifest in time. But in that time, it is common for one to become heart-broken and lose all faith. Even if what you want has already manifested, to turn your back on the power that helped you, and to say it's not real, may be the beginning of your desire's undoing.

I like to think of all our vibrational patterns as flowing in and out of everything else, making one big mushy ocean of vibrations. If you start a wave, and don't let it crash, it'll spread eventually. Since everything vibrates, you just have to match certain pitches with certain things to get some harmony working towards your will.

I think that failure is even a magick act. To say, "this spell won't work," is to vibrate that will within yourself, causing failure. It is theorized that skeptics are so void of spiritual experience because they have produced a natural tendancy to ground all energy they come in contact with. Like a defense mechanism. I imagine that fear of failure would produce similar tendencies.

Or fear of having that magick go out of control and create something awful? I'm even more afraid to try now. I have developed a pessimistic view when trying to do things on my own...from experience I have learned that if I think I can do something I usually can't. Which is bad. But I'll remember not to harbour any negative thoughts if and when I decide to do any spellwork....which I am hoping to do, sometime.....I just dont have any reason other that the desire for knowledge and that ability. And that desire does not give me a purpose for the spell so I cannot create a spell.

I like how you say vibrations...why does it remind me of some Hippie saying "vibes".... you know, like in a phrase "He just gives me bad vibes, man."
I used this word once, and I can't even remember how, now. Something gave me bad vibes, but I can't remember what. I wonder if it is an effect of those "Bad vibes" that I didn't even want to remember what had caused them? biggrin

I think what you mean by vibrations and what I mean by energy and what video games and stories mean by mana - yes I am adding a new word here with no prior mention - is all one and the same. Energy, which vibrates, is what makes up the world. It creates patterns and...everything effects everything else.
This would also explain why some things appear or feel to be "calling" to us - when I pick up a stone and like it better than another because it just "feels right," when you like a certain tarot card over any other, etc. They could have certain qualities that appeal to you personally, have a personal significance, etc, or have a certain vibe that attracts you. Okay enough of this for today, I have to read Beowulf and make another post somewhere else biggrin ta!

I hate "the Secret". I hate it. I hate it with the burning intensity of a thousand desert suns. So very very much. Oh god. Argh.

Yeah. As soon as I saw that book I thought to myself "Oh HELL no. THOUSANDS of people are going to buy that because it's called "the secret". BEST MARKETING EVER. Everyone will simply HAVE to know what the secret is."

And then it was on Oprah. Argh.

Pretty much my feelings on the content are summed up by Deo on his podcast. He rants. I would rant more than he does.

Poor quantum physicists are sitting there going "WTF. NO. NO. STOP SAYING THINGS THAT ARE WRONG."

[/rant]

(You think THAT was bad? Gods forbid you get me started on Phantom of the Opera or the atrocities that Chris Nolan dares to call Batman.)

That fear of having magick go out of control is one good reason to get to know yourself and control your mind a bit better.

It's true, you do need a purpose for a spell; however, there are threshold spells you can find. In which, the purpose is to venture into another plane, or to draw something from another plane to you.

And I'm with ya on your thoughts on vibration. You mentioned things vibrating a certain way to have personal significance for you. Well, similarly, I think giving something significance, like a symbol, changes the way things vibrate.
