Okay, I feel ashamed that I don't know this...but if I don't ask, I won't become a better horsewoman, right? sweatdrop
So: What are steeplechases exactly? Are they the same as cross country?

Not a stupid question at all. A steeple chase is like a flat race, except there are varying hedge and sometimes wood jumps to jump. Youre out on the oval with a lot of other riders. Cross country, depending who you ask can be a few different things. From an eventing point of veiw, its you and your horse on a large jumping course over a field with varying terrain where you jump solid jump, water, ditches, banks, etc at a gallop, but not as fast as a steeplechase.

A steeple chase is like racing, only there are jumps involved. All the horses are on the track at the same time. Cross country is more like show jumping, one competitor at a time, only not in an arena and over more 'natural' obstacles (logs, ditches, hedges ect.).
Just a comparison I thought would help. Brat's was much more of a technical description.
Hope my comparison helps!
