What is a guild and what can I do with it? Guilds are like your own little mini Gaia. You have your own threads to create and control as you would. Your own crew of "Moderators" to help you keep the place clean and friendly. Your own rules (within boundaries of the ToS) and most importantly, control over whom you allow in and whom you do not.If you think of Gaia as a town, city, or even state, think of your guild as your home. In general, the cops aren't going to come and bust down your door unless you really mess up, conversely, they aren't going to help you when your kid won't go to bed on time. It is up to you to control, keep safe, and keep healthy 3

How do I clean out a guild? In each thread there are controls at the bottom: This button allows you to move the thread into a different subforum This button allows you to lock a thread so that only crew and above may post in it This unlocks a thread This deletes the entire thread (I believe it has been stated that there will never be a way to delete all threads in a guild, each must be done individually) As for members, to change the status of a member: (each member's status must be changed individually, I believe it has been stated that there will never be a way to ban all members) At the top of the guild page appears. If you are Crew, Vice Captain, or Captain you can do the following:Demote members or Ban members Additionally, VC and C can:Promote members to any status EXCEPT Captain (which we will get to later) To reiterate: THERE IS NO WAY TO DELETE ALL THREADS/POSTS/MEMBERS IN ONE FELL SWOOP, it must be done individually 4

I just bought a guild, is it ok to ban everyone and delete everything? In all technicality, the guild is yours. You can do whatever you want with it if you are Captain. You may, however, wish to include a message when you are banning/demoting the former members, letting them know what is going on (the guild being under new ownership) or even offering them the opportunity to check out your new guild. That is up to you. As with my prior "house" analogy, the "children" (members) don't really have a say, though be warned: if you want your guild to be successful, your members SHOULD have a voice in what goes on. When you buy a guild from someone, it is most often that the guild is being sold because it is a "dead" (unused) and the members probably forgot the place exists. To summarize: The guild is yours to do with as you please, but that doesn't mean you need to be rude. 5

UNLIMITED POWER! What powers do each of the ranks have?In order from most to least powerful: CaptainCaptains have the ultimate power. Deleting threads, editing posts, moving threads, spending guild funds (the account), banning, demoting, promoting, inviting, accepting, rejecting, and editing the guild home page. There can be only one! Vice CaptainThese guys have all the powers of the Captain, so be careful whom you choose to be your VC, they do have the power to overthrow you, or even to sell the guild, just as Captains do. *a note pointed out by Sin of Six Swords: While at their current status, VCs cannot demote other VCs or demote a Captain, all they need to do is use the "Change Guild Ownership" feature and make themselves Captain. (this is just meant as a technical clarification for anyone who actually cares) There can be many VCs in a guild CrewThese men and women can accept and reject applications, edit posts and threads, invite and ban members. There can be many of these. MemberThese lil buggers can post, make threads, edit their posts, delete their posts, and, um.... they can donate to you? Unlimited clone troopers! 6

I've got the ship, why do I need the crew? Members are obvious, why have a club without them, but why do you need Crew and VCs?Crew are your basic enforcers. People you trust to help keep your place tidy and operating within your rules and the ToS. Why do I need a Vice Captain though? Isn't it dangerous?Vice Captains are there in case you die... In case something needs to be done to the guild and you are in prison and can't get to a computer. If you decide to quit Gaia or get yourself banned, all the hard work of your crew will not go to waste if you have a VC, for THEY can takeover in your stead. If you do not have a person on Gaia that you trust with your prized possessions, do not make them VC. Instead, create a mule account and make it VC, that way, if something happens you can just use the mule if you get banned, or you can give the mule to a friend to run things for you without the possibility of losing the items on your main account. Many guilds use a mule anyway, which I will touch on later. 7

Banners, Images, and Bumps OH MY! The guild banner size (the one that appears on the left of your guild list) is (apparently) 200x40Banners are quite important for any good guild. Just as an army uses a flag to rally over, so too does your guild need a symbol of its power, a beacon to be seen and recognized. Get yourself a signature-sized guild banner and let your members have access to it for free. You WANT them to use it and promote their guild, to be proud of the fact that they are in it and want to show the world. Just like those uber-rich pixelated Halo-wearers, art is where it's at. Good art is associated with good guilds. It either means you have talent in yourself, which is prized in Gaia, talent in your guild, or your guild is prosperous enough to afford good art. 8

MONEY?! So, for a good long time everyone wondered what the Guild Account would be used for. Now, we have some answers. Aside from the rumours I hear floating around, here is what I know for certain: Sub-Forums: 2500 gold To buy a subforum, go to the Moderator Panel and choose Edit Guild Forums Mass PMs: Unknown gold Guild Halls: Unknown gold THERE IS NO WAY TO TAKE THE MONEY OUT OF THE GUILD ACCOUNT AND USE IT FOR YOURSELF, THINK OF IT AS A GIFT CERTIFICATE TO A STORE, IT CAN ONLY BE USED TO MAKE OFFICIAL GUILD PURCHASESAs more features are added to guilds and uses for gold are added, this will be updated. 9

Wanna buy some deathsticks? If you want to find a guild to buy there are two main places to look: Captain's Guild Selling Thread and Registered Guild Forum Also, these are your best choices for a place to sell your used guilds. 10

Buying/Selling A Guild? If you want to buy a guild, be careful of whom you buy from. As any of you that sell art must know, there is potential to be cheated. Here are some Suggestions: Know from whom you buy/to whom you sell: There are a few of us out here that sell guilds as regular business. These folks have a reputation for doing so, and by simply checking their posts, the guilds they own, how long they have been on Gaia; you can find good indications toward their honesty. I hate (love) to make an example of myself, but I AM a good one. I've been on Gaia since 2003, I currently own about 15 guilds. If you check my public posts, they are almost exclusively bumping my sales thread. And if you are in this guild, you can check the Captain's Guild Selling Thread and see just how many I've sold. Mules: Lots of people use mules, especially guild owners, so that alone shouldn't discourage you. But try finding for whom they are a mule, ask them if you like. If they say they aren't, they are lying, no new user can afford a guild, and if they could, they wouldn't be selling it so quickly. Trading the Gold: When it comes time to trade, LABEL THE TRADE! Label it with the guild ID# which you can find at the end of the URL of each guild home page. Label the price you are paying, too. If someone changes the trade title and it makes you uncomfortable, ask them to restart the trade and not to do that. Vice Captains As soon as the guild becomes yours, IMMEDIATELY demote all Vice Captains down to crew. Extra Insurance: If you want extra insurance, aside from the normal screenshots of conversations, post publicly that you are buying/selling [Name of person]'s Guild [provide a link] for [how much gold/items] After posting publicly, have them quote your post and agree to it. WARNING: If you think you are in danger of being scammed, simply back out. Tell the person you don't feel comfortable, or hell, even lie and say you thought you had more gold than you did. Whatever, just try not to be rude over what could very well be a misunderstanding or mutual mistrust 11

The Infamous Guild Ranking System For those of you that actually care about your guild, you are at least partially aware of the ranking system. In Short: The ranking system affects where your guild appears on the master list of guilds. This is to say that, if you did a search for all guilds of all categories, your guild's rank would determine its place on that list. The same is said for when you search by guild category. Rumor Has It: The whispers in the wind say that in the future your guild rank will affect much more than just your position on the list, but I have no proof of this. What Determines Your Rank? Well, from what I know, the following factors contribute to your guild rank, but their influence in it is unknown to me, and I have no 100% proof. These statements come from my observations of the 100 or so guilds I have owned and the gleamings I have gotten from a certain Gaian. Guild ID# Older is better Gold in the Account This one is pretty obvious, more gold means more members, generally. I, however, suspect that it may be better for your rank to have 100 people donate 1 gold each than 1 person donate 100 gold. Members More members are better, clearly. Once again though, I suspect that it is better to have fewer members who post daily than it is to have too many members that have never posted. Posts Another pretty obvious one, and once again I have my speculation that one person making every post in a guild won't help the guild much Sub-Forums and Other Purchases Assuredly help, but may or may not just be part of the Account factor. Another speculation of mine is that the number of JOIN requests you receive, and quite possibly whether you simply accept everyone whom applies or if some are rejected or not may affect things No matter what your guild is like, though, ACTIVITY is key 12

Your Lord and Master, Darknrgy This is one busy man. No oner eally knows him, nor do they know what is going on with him. What I DO know is that he is THE programmer for the GGN. He is rarely seen posting in the CG, much to our dismay, for he is the only one who can fix most our problems here. Running to him every time you have a tiny problem, however, just slows things down.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... Arethic or Doji Kurohito
Arethic pokes around here often enough and Doji Kurohito has always been helpful in the past when concerned with GGN issuesUpdate 1/9/06: Recently badloki has been the most frequent lurker of the CG, and quite helpful at thatLoki Omg! would be your new head of the CG and Nana_Wing runs some of its subforums now. Turn to them for help, although we DO have a GGN modlist now. 13

Deleted or Not Deleted? THAT is the question! Deleting a post is much like deleting something using Windows. It isn't really gone, it is just moved to the Recycle Bin. The same is true for deleting posts. You can delete them, and they are gone from your view, but to my knowledge, Moderators and Admins can access such posts. Normal Gaia users CANNOT 14

To See With Your Eyes Or Perceive With Your Mind? Three Guild-viewing settings:Public: This setting means that anyone can come into your guild, look around, and even post. Private: This setting allows other users to check into your guild and threads, but blocks them against posting unless they are a member. Hidden: No entry without authorization! Gaians can't see what goes on in this guild. 15
