Well, the Title sums up most all of the problem, I tried the SUSE forums and nobody has a solution that's worked yet. YaST isn't working, so like all of the stuff there (basically anything in that Administrator Setting stuff) doesn't work. I try to open things and it gives an error message (I'll post that if someone needs it) so none of the stuff there works, the Automatic Update thing doesn't work, the whole rest of the system works just nothing in the YaST stuff.
I tried the repair thing from the DVD, that didn't work. The DVD is fine I'm pretty sure, because YaST worked for a couple full months before it stopped working a bit short of two weeks ago. One would at least think that it wouldn't have worked from the start if it were a problem with the DVD.
Not entirely urgent, the problem is that it kind of doesn't work which makes installing things and getting updates to everything kind of hard (well, for me and my inability to figure out how to install any other way, it actually makes it impossible, you know...)

Can you post the error that YaST gives you? What do you mean by YaST doesn't work does it not want to load, and if so is it YaST (Command line) or YaST2 (GUI) that does not want to come up or is it just some modules not want to load?
The Automatic Update feature does not really update the system, it only creates a cron job for zypper. To make sure that it is installing updates as root type the "mail" command and you should get a list of messages each messages summarizes a different set of patches and updates that it is installing. Of course you can always install the patchs/updates by hand using YOU (YaST Online Update) or "zypper up" (zypper update).
Of course there is one thing you can try but that will be considered dangerous because it will turn your system into what is called 11.0+, what that means is your system will be a hybrid of openSUSE 11.0 and openSUSE 11.1 beta 1 (as of currently development release). If you want to give this a try then you can simple use this command as root
zypper dup or zypper dist-upgrade

Someone on the SUSE forums suggested trying to see if zypper could do something with a command line and it seemed to fail to understand what I wanted it to do and responded with stuff saying it couldn't, so I honestly can't tell what's going on. If you know how to fix that, or how to export all my settings to something else then import them after reinstalling or something, that'd be great. (ideally fix the problem, but other solutions so drastic as reinstalling are possible, I just would really hope that we exhaust most other realistic solutions first)

There are couple of things we can try to fix this issue, can you link me to your post in the openSUSE forums or tell me where it is, the name of the thread, and your users name so I can find it in my USENET newsreader that way I can work with other members of openSUSE forums). As for some things we can do, It seems like your qt packages are bad, if running KDE 4.1.x you need to add this repo, this can be done through zypper like so zypper addrepo "http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.0/" "KDE QT repo" Then update the packages with zypper update -t package -r "KDE QT repo" If you are able to open up the command line version of YaSt (just type "yast" in the command line) then go to: System -> /etc/sysconfig Editor -> System -> YaST2 -> GUI -> WANTED_GUI and make sure it is set for auto If the above does not work then I would suggest that you do a distro upgrade and see if that fixes your problem zypper dist-upgrade If worse comes to worse then you can reinstall SUSE without losing your /home directory which will means you keep all your user settings and files. You can do this by putting in your openSUSE 11.0 install disk and choose "New Installation" going through the same sets you did to install SUSE the first time until you get to the partitioner. This time it will want to reformat / and /home click on the edit button and select your /home partition and tell it not to format it. Before doing this I suggest backing up your /home directory just in case, and I have a nice bash script that can do that for you http://code.google.com/p/backup-light/

I'm at school as I post this so I can't let you know how well it works until I get home, but I'll edit this later with the results of that. By the way, curious thing you mention 4.1.x, I installed 4.1 but this problem happened a small bit after I did that, not right away, but I still use 3.5.9 because 4.1.x isn't fast enough for what I'd like it to do, it lags a lot. Okay, the code I get with that first thing says: Target initialization failed: rpmdb2solv -r '/' -p '/etc/products.d' > '/var/cache/zypp/solv/@System/solvmHlO4R' repo_products: syntax error at line 1:0 And then the next one... after that, it keeps saying more errors basically telling me that it couldn't load until it stops out and has a much weirder looking terminal, instead of going back to the one that was there.

Um, yeah, I completely don't have the first clue how to do what you said about keeping the Home Directory, so yeah...
~<>~ EDIT ~<>~ Actually, on second thought, I probably could just redo most of my personal settings, so I'll probably be just fine re-installing...it'll take time but that's looking ideal at this point because I just simply don't have the time to find some workable solution...(falling behind on a few small things because I can't go fetch programs I didn't think I'd need that I now know I need for school, so I can't get work done at home much...) ~<>~ EDIT2 ~<>~ Okay, after a reinstall, everything seems to work fine, everything that is but my Kaffeine now doesn't play .flv any more. Do you know how to fix that one? It wasn't included when I installed a whole bunch of different things that it sent me to. ~<>~ EDIT3 ~<>~ Hold on, there really is a problem, the sound doesn't want to work anywhere... question

For that you just need to install libxine1 from the packman repo and win32codics-all and that will get Kaffeine and any other xine based players to work correctly.

Check your volume under YaST for the sound volume, sometimes that starts off at 0

Thanks for that, I'd kept saying no because it wanted to use something else instead, but I somehow convinced it to install that libxine thing, and it works...
Unfortunately the sound doesn't, which is weird because that worked off the bat from the previous installation. ~<>~ EDIT ~<>~ It says that everything's full volume that needs to be, the only things that are 0 I remember were 0 last time to get rid of a fuzzy static-like sound from back when it did work. ~<>~ EDIT2 ~<>~ Oh, sound still works in Windows, so yes I'm sure that the speakers still work (in case there was any reason to think they didn't) ~<>~ EDIT3 ~<>~ Well, okay, sound started working for SUSE for some reason, but Firefox doesn't get sound. It's weird, the last time I had this problem someone had me add aoss before Firefox in what SUSE tries to run to see if that would work, and that's still there, but it doesn't do sounds now... ~<>~ EDIT4 ~<>~ Actually, scratch that, sound in general just started working. It wasn't working, then I played a few games to pass some time, then it started working for some reason... question Well, at least everything is working now. ~<>~ EDIT5 ~<>~ Sorry to keep editing this, is there something similar to AudioKonvert for sound files, but with video files instead? That'd be fairly useful if you know what one might be called. ~<>~ EDIT6 ~<>~ Okay, so actually, despite what was said earlier, okay, now the sound isn't working again, after I had to press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace because a YouTube video froze on me they stopped working, not sure why, so yeah...

You need to be more detailed when you ask for help, "Sound doesn't work" is not enough information to be able to really help, try posting information on your desktop envirionment (Kde 3.5, kde 4, gnome) that way we know if you are using ARTS (KDE 3.5 sound deamon) Phonon (KDE 4 sound system), Pulseaudio (GNOMEs sound whatever). What backend are you using ALSA or OSS for ARTS and Pulseaudio/XINE or Gstreamer for Phonon. What is the volume for your Master and PCI and any other needed audio out devices. Any other information you think will be helpful, it is better to give more than enough than not enough.
As for Flash and Firefox this is a common problem and you don't have to restart X to fix, all you really have to do is close firefox from the close button on the window border or killall firefox-bin from the command line.
Make sure your user account is in the "audio" group, you can do this from "User and Group Management" module in YaST.

Good point, it's on KDE 3.5 though sound isn't working on any as far as I know, which is odd because it worked on all of them before. I'm using whatever is installed by default I guess, I think ALSA, that's what it says in the settings. I just added myself to Audio, though I could've sworn I was in that already.
Sorry for not mentioning more details. Some of those I didn't even realize were details relevant to mention (or more, the sound system type for each desktop I didn't realize they used different ones, only been using linux since shortly after SUSE 11.0 came out) so yeah...
In KMix the audio output is all set to max and turned on (brighter green light) so there should be sound, going to see if restarting after adding myself to the Audio group helps any... ~<>~ EDIT ~<>~ Sorry, yeah, it's not coming back, the sound doesn't work (details you asked for above) though it's weird, like I said, it did work once after the reinstall, then stopped working again, which is weird because things shouldn't just disappear. ~<>~ EDIT2 ~<>~ Okay, really weird, now the updater stopped working, with a big long error message that keeps saying there were errors with each of the repositories (like all of them) and the Package Manager still works, but takes forever to tell to stop worrying that it can't get the repositories.

The repositories error is to be expected (see http://news.opensuse.org/2008/10/10/power-outage-in-area-where-most-opensuse-servers-are-located/ and http://news.opensuse.org/2008/09/23/upcoming-factory-changes/ for more details) as you can tell the change in layout of the openSUSE repos, and the loss of power where the main servers are at caused a lot of problems. Do not fear the main servers will be up soon enough and the mirrors will be able to rsync and problems with the updater will be fixed. As for your sound issues I'm not sure, I never had sound problems like you are before, maybe some one in openSUSE forums will know, just ask in the Multimedia section of Applications 3nodding

Thanks. As for the other problem, yeah, I read about that too while wandering around and just hadn't gotten to editing my post to mention that. I'll look around in the SUSE Forums too though to see if anyone there can help me out with that stuff. Hopefully it's solved soon, it's really nice to have working sound, you get used to it being there and it's weird to not have it.
