I'm learning Latin right now, and have taken Spanish last year. Was reading Middle English in my Study of Literature course (Chaucer rocks). I want to learn Irish Gaelic and Old English.
Anyone else with a love of languages? (Anyone want to help me learn Latin lol?)

I love languages! blaugh I love them a whole lot! And I'll help you learn Latin wink but it was a few years ago so I'm not sure how much help I'll be. I hope it's classical rather than church; them Catholics don't know how to pronounce it properly xd

Lol. Yes, it's "way-nee, wee-dee, wee-kee" not "vay-nee, vee-dee, vee-chee"
wink lol.
It's hard to get used to all the case endings and such, especially since there are four sets of endings (that I've learned so far) for the 1st and 2nd declension nouns, and three sets of endings for the adjectives. I guess I just need to write them all down a bunch of times in order to remember them all lol.
And of course remembering the similarities in them help. It's crazy how many words sound like Latin words, or are derived from Latin (cura - cure, lilium - lily, tyrannus - tyrant, gloria - glory, etc.) Everyone says it's a dead language, but it seems to me like it's alive and thriving inside of the English language blaugh

I studied Latin last year for a semester. I thought it was brilliant, but I unfortunately only got to study like, four declensions, I think (I honestly don't remember, I was inundated with Java and Biological Bases for Psychology at the same time). Still, it's an awesome language. Not dead, but dreaming, I'd say. =]

Though I in actuality speak very very little Japanese, I enjoy it more than most languages (though I am happy with English wink ).
Most of my reasoning lay behind the fact that it is primarily vowel based, and in essence this makes it less percussive than most languages and very melodic.
So my reasons are somewhat selfishly musical. eek
Unfortunately, with the exception of base terms, I am otherwise fairly unfamiliar with Latin. crying

Japanese is a really nice language. I want to learn it someday. I've gotten into watching a lot of anime, Japanese voice-overs with English subtitles. I hate the English dubs. There is only one anime that I've found so far when the English voices sounds better than the Japanese. Otherwise, Japanese sounds so much better than the English.
Because of this, I've also been listening to a lot of Japanese music (the opening and ending songs lol) I have a playlist on my profile with almost every theme song from the animes I have watched. I've also picked up a few words here and there, and occasionally find myself saying "Kawaii!" or another common word/phrase without thinking. blaugh

That's really the only way to go when anime is in concern (makes note particularly of the slaughtering of Ginko's voice from Mushishi).

Japanese music is quite amazing (speaking from knowledge of more modern music, particularly J-rock). I love the note combinations in their scale structures, though yet to learn the precise scale patterns.
Oh, and as for the occasional Japanese slip, it happens to the best of us. ninja

Unless you don't watch anime and/or HATE people like me who love anime and.....yeah....I have a friend like that....calls me a "weeaboo" or something...lol like I care.

I have to argue that English dubs are not always bad. A good example is Goldenboy, the voice acting was very good and gave the main character so much life. I think the voice over quality is directly related to the import company. I find that ADV films does a constantly good job with voice over.

Oh, I definitely agree that some dubs aren't bad. It's just that, most of the dubs I've found are really....annoying. Naruto for example. I understand that when choosing a voice-over actor, they chose one that sounded like the Japanese actor. Great, but the voice sounds better when speaking Japanese than when speaking in English. however, in one of the Naruto movies (and I can't remember what it was called, I'd have to ask my sister) I noticed that all the minor characters were really well done. They're voices were great for the roles. It's just Naruto's voice that I find annoying. And in a lot of other anime dubs, a really high girl's voice is super annoying too. Try watching Ninja Nonsense in English Dubbed, the first few words will make you turn it off.
So I'm gonna go look up Goldenboy now. ta~

There do seem to be a few that sneak by from time to time. I.E. the english voice over in Excel Saga (minus the voice change mid season) was unbelievably amazing (ADV though razz ).
Most Miyazaki films have excellent english voice over's as well. There are many which were horrible translations though. One of the worst I found were the Bleach choice actors (Horrible!). So the battle really sort of sways both ways. Kentaro definitely has an amazing voice, which is used as one of the background character announcing in Nerv Headquarters in the first few episodes of Eva (Huzzah!).
Well, now that I've inserted more parenthesis than I think I've ever used in such a compact group of sentences, time for ceasing.

LOL I'm posting here again. biggrin
I watched Bleach: Memories of Nobody in theatres a while back...like October...since it was in theatres, it was in English. I have to say, the guy who playing Ichigo wasn't too bad, as his voice actually seemed to match the character. However, I found a couple times where Rukia would say something and her voice was too high or the tone of voice was just out of place. The worst part about the dub is the pronunciation of the Japanese words they keep, and the couple translations that sound weird. I mean, Mr. Hat-clogs? Honestly, Sandal-hat sounds SO much better biggrin lol if you've ever watched Bleach with subs and then looked at dubs, you'd know. It's just...they need to learn how to pronounce Japanese words. rolleyes

Urahara is my freaking hero, and I have to admit, I appall his english voice. Definitely agree with the mispronunciation of Japanese statements (such as way of destruction 31 since Rukia uses it so often smile . Or, not to be super picky, but how they change some words that were all ready in English just threw me off.

I totally had an Urahara hat at one point, but
A: My somewhat large head and poofy hair didn't agree with it's size and
B: It was shoinked by someone in one of my previous moves.
