Alright, i'm really bad with words here so if i word something kinda wrong, please forgive me.

in Exodus 20:3 is says "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Lots of people look at this a different way. I've heard several say that this verse means not to bow down and worship other things like budah, shiva ext., but thats it. Others say anything can become a god if you let it. This includes maybe tv, a person, a boyfriend or girlfriend. If you let it fall in the place of God, it becomes a god. What are your opinions? How do you determine when something has become a god, in your eyes, in the place of God?

The verse means don't let anything become more important to you than God. God desires to be first in your life. Well, how do you know if God is first in your life? I asked a mentor of mine that last spring. He answered prompty... "what do you think about most?"

I knew right then I had many things before God when he said that... It was for me my boyfriend, school, work, friends, internet, my sin. It was everything... and although this is getting less and less as I seek God more and more, and love Him more and more.. It is still there.

So, yes, the verse means not to love anything else before God. Which is difficult!

A god is something that you care about more than anything else in the world. Isn't it amazing that God doesn't even have a name, He's just God! Anything can become a god if you focus on it enough.

Incidentally, those in authority in Jesus' time probably wondered whether Jesus and his disciples were breaking this commandment.

Of course God has a name. He has loads. For example, consider the tetragrammation YHWH.

Those are just names humans have given him or names he used to try and get people to understand like "I am" or "Yahweh" or "Shalom" etc, etc.
John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it

Yup, that's another name for God who is thought to be Jesus.

But Jesus is the Son of God..so wouldn't believing that Jesus is God, be idoltary? Or even replacing God with the Bible could be idoltary too right?

I heard a sermon on this once. Each name used to define God, whether it be Jesus, Elohim, El-shadai, El-bethel, etc. (forgive spelling errors, I'm going off of memory) was used to describe a different aspect of God. Another set of examples would be the Trinity of God as the Father, God as the Son, and God as the Holy Spirit. It's all one being, but each name refers to a different aspect.

Anything that you focus on more than God is an idol, whether it be money, friends, a book, or an actual 'god' or 'goddess'. Last time I checked, though, we didn't worship the Bible. We use it to learn more about God, but it is not in and of itself a focus of worship.

There are a lot of people that do worship the Bible and hold it in the highest form rather than God. They believe if you believe in the Bible and read it that you'll go to Heaven. And if you go against the Bible that you go to hell. Which to me sounds a little messed up. Because you're supposed to put all your trust and faith in God and not a book. The Bible is meant to be read as a guide nothing more and nothing less.

I agree wholeheartedly, Rai. I've never heard of that particular sect before, though.

I think they're the evangelicals. What I said is based on my observations in the Christianity chat on myspace. A lot that most of the Christians say there makes you question Christianity and simply go, "wtf?"

Ummm... I think you are mistaken. Evangelical Christians are those who feel that their faith calls them to evangelize, thus the name. And though it pains me to say it, I think that the majority of so-called Christians don't know the first thing about their faith, which it where the internet's distortions come in.

...internet's distortions...

I do believe that's redundant.
