no swearing, no porno, a general lack of creepiness, maybe a little bit of booze and underage drunkeness, haha
Icarus's Wings
(this poem references the Greek tale of the foolish teen Icarus, whose father fashioned him wings out of wax to help him escape the Minotaur's island. Icarus soared through the sky joyfully, but in his elation at flying he came too close to the sun, which melted his wings, and he fell into the ocean.)
We can sit side by side
And talk for hours
Your arms around my waist
My eyes drawn to your eyes
What's your favorite color?
I love mint chip ice cream and my favorite bands are--
Let's talk and talk
Until we pause and fill the silence
With my nose pressed against yours
And your crazy music raging from your speakers
The park where the benches are rickety and the grass tall
The movie theatre that smells like popcorn and anticipation
The lawn until the sprinklers force us inside
There could be nothing there but you
And the popcorn is indiscernible against
The fresh scent of your neck
Fingers intertwined into doves
White feathers and beauty
Until we fall into the sea,
Wax wings melting with the hot fires
Of teenage romance
Come, we can talk for hours
For now,
Until we soar into the sun

Meet Me
Walking through the halls
Backpacks and heavy hearts in tow
Promising plans for today
After school, meet me at the Ridge
And we can let go of everything
Let all these teenage woes plummet over the cliff of oblivion
Sinking deep into this beer as the music blasts
Angry verses from your battered Chevi
Tell me about the way she smiled
And I'll tell you how he held my hand
With the utter brashness of young love
And you and me, you and I
Will drink to the terrible heartbreak
Of those that never mattered and passed us by
Her in her leather sandals
He in his vans
Like a hair in the hands of the fates
Waiting to be snapped or broken
We will turn to the fading sunlight and raise our bottles
You and me, you and I
And tomorrow return to the same grey halls
Carefree as the sun
Until you see her with her friends and he brushes by me
The Ridge again tonight?

Late Again (true story!!!)
My alarm was never set so
I wake up an hour late but
Then I’m rushing out the door just barely
On time until I realize that
I’ve forgotten my homework and I
Turn back, racing to the house and
I make it there quickly and get my papers
But then the garage door won’t close so
I dash inside and press the button until
Finally it creaks closed and I hurry
Out the side door and then it’s sprinkling and
I don’t have a jacket but it’s too late now
Because I’m already running and
I left my cell phone so I don’t know
What time it is and I feel incredibly stupid
Feet pounding against the ground as
My damp hair whips around my face but
No one’s around to care because no one’s
Stuck out in this stupid weather but me as
I fight with time to arrive before the bell
And finally I see the school way
Ahead and it’s foggy but I don’t mind
Anymore because I can’t be late and
As I approach the school dread sinks
Through my stomach because I
Don’t see anyone around but a couple kids
And I slow to a walk figuring
If I’m already late then a couple more
Minutes won’t hurt but then I see
One of my friends and she waves and says
Why are you so early?

Forever Early
My family tells me I’m a freak.
I arrive at school 40 minutes early every day.
I sit down to watch a TV show 10 minutes before it comes on.
I arrive at the movie theatre an hour early—
Just to get a seat.
My dad tells me to loosen up.
“When I was your age I was always late.”
Only I still sit and stare at the washing machine
For the last 5 minutes of its cycle.
I wake up 3 hours before school.
I have a clock on my cell phone, watch and dashboard.
I’m the first student to class in the morning.
I’m living life but watching
Wasted minutes filter away
Like sand through an hourglass.

The Mountain
I seem to be a pebble, but really I am a mountain
I possess a hard surface not smooth and small
But large, craggy and secretive
I hold life in my rocky soil
I possess an air of history
Skip me across a sea, and
I will make not a ripple, but
I will create a typhoon
Marking my entrance into the waters
My self is contained in a small grey sphere
A sphere that truly hides a mountain
I am a desolate thing when
I am in my false, pebble form
For I can hold no life
I revel in the truth that
I am more than you see
Upon my small, hard surface
I am truly large and great
I am the mountain beneath your feet
And the strength in hard granite
Pick me up, a small, tiny pebble
And you hold a mountain in your palms
I seem to be a pebble, but really I am a mountain
I possess a hard surface not smooth and small
But large, craggy and secretive
I hold life in my rocky soil
I possess an air of history
Skip me across a sea, and
I will make not a ripple, but

My Love
My love is a weed
Growing strong and fast
Unnoticed beside the roses and blooms
But beautiful if you take the time to examine it.
My love is the little girl that stoops to pick the weed
Our daughter, our child
Taking the time to examine its true beauty
And to bring it inside
To you.
My love is you—your careless eyes
Prepared to take on the world
With a laugh and flick of your wrist
As you stir dinner.
My love is my arms around your waist
In the fading hours of evening
As I reluctantly watch your reality show
Yet enthralled in your soft hair instead.
My love is this house
The house that brings us together
Holds us within
Like this soft rhythm within my chest
Keeping time to the melody of your voice
And my whispered words:
“I’m going to love you until this house falls down around us.”
And I do.
My love is a weed
Growing strong and fast
Unnoticed beside the roses and blooms
But beautiful if you take the time to examine it.
