Hey gang, I've managed to find a Honda NS400R sitting in a friends garage, and he'd be looking to get rid of it really cheap. This thread may be a bit premature, but I'm going to find out what needs to be done to get it running, and if its do-able then I'll finally have myself another bike!
I'll post pictures when I go and see the bike again with my father.

Well thats the state it currently is in. Everything seems to be in boxes, from the carbs to the rest of the fairings.

After scratching around in the garage some more, I found the seats and fairing. Seat seems to be in good nic, the rest of the bike seems solid, I didn't see any rust or anything.

There where two dings on the petrol tank, and a few scrapes on the fairing here and there, while the front faiiring was cracked, however all the lights mirrors and indicators all seem to be there.

Spoke to the owner before visiting the garage. He says he's not doing anything with it, and he'd be happy to let it go. In his opinion all that needs to happen is the fluids need to be drained and replaced, the battery needs to be charged and put in/ replaced and front forks need to be found.

I then called a bike shop in town and they said they didn't have anything like that, and that they doubted they where going to get anything. This has not dampened my spirits, as we might be able to get something else that can fit in its place. 3nodding

Hey gang, been ages since I last posted, but anyways I've decieded to pick up the bike. Hopefully going to pick it up this weekend. Then take the month to pull it to bits and put it back together all cleaned up and nice. Then hopefully by the time the next pay check arrives I'll have money to replace the front forks. smile

sorry about taking so long between updates.

Basically I now have the bike and it is in a ridable condition.
We had the front brake caliper reconditioned, and its now on the bike with a fresh set of pads. So at the moment when I ride the bike I'm still not putting my self into a situation where I have to grab a fist full of brakes, which I'm thinking is a good thing because this bike is certainly VERY VERY QUICK!

It is capable of cruising around normally, and it acts much little delivery bike, but as soon as you wind it up to around 4k rpm the power starts to slowly kick in and at 6k rpm there is litterally a blast of power. If you're not expecting the power the bike will litterally fhrow you off, if you're not holding on properly then you'll go over the back. haha.

I still need to find a speedo cable to hook up to the front, so I'm not sure of what speeds I'm able to reach, I am fairly confident that it will be able to beat a mighty R6 in a 200m dash.

I can't ride the bike all that much, because I have noticed that the bike is getting hot very quickly indeed. So I've got to pull off the fairing, and check the thermostat, radiator pipes and test the water pump.
The last time I came back from a ride the water in the resivior was literally boiling. I haven't taken really taken the bike out since then.

So the list of thigs to do is the following.
  • troubleshoot track down and fix overheating problem
    • get radiator tested and maybe re-cored
    • test thermostat
    • test water pump
    • check replace water hoses
  • Get bike tuned by 2-stroke spealist
  • Get bike's papers in order and get road worthy
  • Get wider rear tire off Suzuki GS500 or Bandit, to match front wheel
  • Fix and repair fairing
  • Get bike re-sprayed
  • Get GS500 or Bandit front mud gaurd

Big update and tear down.

Since it was a nice summer day, I made a nice workspace and today I pulled my bike to bits.
It was mostly to remove the radiator, but I also wanted to check the hoses and such. Got a nice list of things to down now. Its a long list of little things, which is nice for a change, as opposed to the Alfa.... sweatdrop

  • O- ring for radiators + thermostat O rings
  • New bolts for fairing
  • New bolts for radiator + radiator top bolt
  • Screw for resivior
  • Fix hole in resivior
  • New Tire valve caps
  • flicker unit
  • get coolant
  • get lots of 2 stroke oil.
  • get a speedo cable
  • front mud gaurd
  • check / replace fuel lines
  • check / replace thermostat
  • get new fuel line clamps
  • fix fuel tap on petrol tank
  • get radiator re-cored
  • put everything back.

Super sweet man. I have old 1972 yamahas and they are air cooled. I had a leak in the radiator on my 98 honda and MAN I was upset. Plus no one could fix an aluminum radiator and a new one was VERY expensive. I bought one from someone on ebay for less than half of new.
