Creatures which do exist in the specified area:
Kodama:
Little tree spirits which live in trees. At night, they walk along the forest and sit in tree tops, turning their heads and making clicking noises. Every tree a kodama lives in is considered blessed. They're very friendly and will approach humans. They will guide confused travelers but will not leave the forest.
Forest Spirits:
These deer wander solo or with a herd of normal deer. They protect the forest and the other living creatures native to it. They don't particularly like humans in the forest, but will tolerate them so long as they don't hurt anything. The forest spirits can give life and take it away if they see fit.
Kitsune:
Small, black foxes with orange eyes. Kitunes can turn into women with long, black hair and orange eyes. When still in human form, the woman will still cast a fox's shadow. Traditionally, the females are classified as seductresses and the men as tricksters.
Moon Deer:
Oddly small, pure white deer. Some of them have red hooves, faces, and antlers. It's said that if you found a shed red antler and hang it over your door you'll have especially good luck every full moon, hence their name. Moon deer congregate every full moon at a body of water (lake, pond, river, ocean, etc.). Because of this, they'll often gather around the onsen ponds. They're very shy but can be convinced to approach humans.
