Main Party:
Lightning
The main protagonist. Lightning is but a code name, her true one remaining a mystery. She was chosen by the fal'Cie to destroy Cocoon and it's 'Holy Government', the Sanctum, whom she used to work under as a soldier. During this time she befriended Sazh Katzroy. Lightning has a sister, Serah, who was engaged to Snow Villiers. The ill fate that befell her Lightning blames on Snow, but even so, she assists him in saving Oerba Dia Vanille, Hope Estheim, and other exiles from the Cocoon government. Her Eidolon is Odin.
Snow Villiers
The strong leader of Team Nora, compused of his childhood friends Gadot, Lebreau, and others. The Holy Government occupies their small home town, taking those considered tainted by Pulse. The three, along with other members, begin their fight against them then. They set out on a rescue mission, which goes horribly wrong when he fails to save Hope Estheim's mother. He joins Lightning, Sazh, Vanille, and Hope to seek out the fal'Cie, leading to he and the others to be turned into l'Cie. He was once engaged to Serah Farron, but something that he couldn't prevent took her away from him, this fact creating tension between him and Lightning. He swears, however, to never allow something like that happen again. His Eidolon is Shiva.
Sazh Katzroy
A former soldier of Cocoon, though he later becomes a l'Cie and assist Lightning and the others in fighting against it. He is said to be a very kind man who is easily moved to tears. He has a six year old son, Dahj, who is crystallized by Jihl Nabaat, motivating him to fight against the Holy Government. He is later captured and interrogated by her along with Vanille. His Eidolon is Brynhildr.
Oerba Dia Vanille
A young girl and citizen of Pulse, the wild world below Cocoon. She is also a l'Cie. She is eventually captured by the Holy Government, during which time she is interrogated by Jihl Nabaat and befriends Hope Estheim. She is saved later by Snow, Lightning, and Team Nora, assisting the former two in their journey. Her Eidolon is Hecatoncheir.
Oerba Yun Fang
A l'Cie woman who seems to be working with the Cocoon government. She considers the main party her friends, and joins them. Why she was with the Cocoon government in the first place is unknown at this point. She is from Pulse, along with Oerba Dia Vanille. Her Eidolon is Bahamut.
Hope Estheim
A 14 year old by prone to childishness, insecurities, and a short temper. He and his mother were both exiles in the Purge, a Holy Government run movement to send those 'tainted' by Pulse to it. He and his mother were saved by Team Nora, but, unfortunately, she was killed during the rescue. Hope now holds a grudge against Snow, and during their time together after being made l'Cie, plots revenge against him. He is comforted by Vanille along the way, though Lightning doesn't want him there. She seems to warm to him, though. His Eidolon is Alexander.

Leiutenant Colonel Yaag Rosh
An officer in the Cocoon army. He was Lightning's superior during her military service. He graduated second in his class, just behind Jihl Nabaat, but had a hard time in the military academy. He often fights in the front-line with common soldiers.
Leiutenant Colonel Jihl Nabaat
Graduating first in her class, she quickly rose through the ranks of the Cocoon military. She is in charge of the PSICOM soldiers. Jihl is said to be intelligent and cruel, with a hate for l'Cie.
Cid Raines
An air force Brigadier under the command of the Sanctum, and the commander of his own warship, the Lindblum. He is shown to wield a gun blade similar to Lightning's.

A Sanctum captain working under Cid Raines.
Team Nora:
Gadot
A member of Team Nora and childhood friend of Snow and Lebreau. He is shown turning his gun on Snow, saying that he, Snow, was "supposed to be the hero."
Lebreau
A member of Team Nora and childhood friend of Snow and Gadot. She is said to act very mature for her age, and often takes on a motherly role in the team.

A member of Team Nora. He was once very self-focused, but now idolizes Snow.

He is said to work for the Sanctum, his position unknown. In the novels, Hope says his father never keeps promises made with his family, always loyal to the Government before them. Despite this, he refuses to give Hope up, even after becoming a l’Cie.
Nora Estheim
She and her son get involved in the Purge from Cocoon, though why they are considered ‘tainted’ is unknown. She volunteers to help fighting along Snow and Team Nora, though she looses her life during the fray.

He becomes a l’Cie accidentally, Jihl Nabaat taking him away from his father shortly after that. The Government sees him as valuable, as he can sense things from Pulse.
