I find it interesting that Norse mythology more closely relates to Native American mythology than greek. I'm not talking about the animal people, but the types of gods they had.
In Norse mythology, there is a definate 'Trickster' god (Loki), as there is in many Native American myths, but not so in Greek myths.
In Greek myths, it seems that every god is pretty much capable of trickery.
XD Norse gods also didn't sleep around as much as Greek gods.
Your thoughts on the similarities?

I haven't really read much about the Native Americans mythology, just a little. But I agree with you that the Norse and the Greek isn't that similar. The gods in the Greek mythology wasn't always that nice. I still need to learn more about the Native Americans and the Greeks mythology, so right now I haven't that much to say. So sorry sweatdrop
Gosh, and I wish I didn't have such a small vocabulary.

I can't say I know that much about Native American mythology, ok more like anything about it.
Although isn't there brothers or something that try to kill each other in both Norse and Greek mythology? confused
Gods normally aren't nice, but the Greeks were really bad about it. Probably didn't help that they were all sleeping around with each other making everyone else angry, because so-and-so was sleeping with so-and-so's wife. With the Greek gods there was one big orgy in which they seemed very proud of -.-
The Greek gods, were also extremely power hungry. Everyone wanted a higher rank and nobody was getting it. Needless to say, that the Greek gods weren't that smart.

But the only thing I can think of in the Norse mythology (when it comes to brothers trying to kill each other) is when Loke (Loki) is tricking the blind Höder in shooting his brother Balder with an arrow. I can't say I remember anything else except for that.

Loki also tried to retrieve Thor's hammer back from the thief, in order to return it to Thor himself. He causes problems but also fixes some as well. One native American mythology that could be realted to this is with a tribe up in Alaska. The crow was a trickster just like Loki, and the Navajos (pronounced Navaho) has a trickster that is a wolf.
BTB anyone have an idea of sites where I can find legends all at once. It's kinda hard for me right now to find them. Stupid job >.>

I am very dissapointed in you, Nightmare! >.< How can you live in NM and not know anything about Native American myths? There's also a trickster in African folklore as well. I think it was a spider named Anasazi...but I could be wrong.
Have you also noticed how all of Loki's children are monsters? There's Hel, and...ok, can't remember their names, but there was a great wolf and a serpant that wound around the world. XD Imagine giving birth to those two.
You know what's super ironic? Norse gods didn't sleep around, but vikings sure did like to rape when they pillaged. Maybe they liked the idea of having gods who had a better moral charcter because that made them more qualified to be gods.
Greek gods were just basicly humans with awesome powers with the way they acted...yet the Greeks were still all about respecting the gods and following their orders.

The only attempt of killing another god that really stands out in my mind is Greek and it was when Hera tried to kill Zeus. The only reason it stands out is because my freshman year, I had to draw a pic (which my art sucks) and do a report...or was it summarize the story? confused One of the two.
How did I guess you were going to say that Midget? As for how can I live in NM and not know anything about Native American myths its because I'm amazing like that. Thanks Whitefang! I now know something about Native American myths!!!
Didn't know too much about Loki's kids other then they existed. But now I'm glad I wasn't the object of Loki's affections...that would hurt.
If that wasn't the case for the Vikings then you kinda have to stop and wonder where they learned all their bad habits in the first place.
And that is what got Caesar killed...ok not really, but it sounded good to say at the time.

O.o I don't think I heard of that one...when did Hera try to kill Zeus? Isn't that sort of impossible?
You know, other than Loki, Norse gods were pretty nice to eachother. XD I think it's because they had Loki as a scapgoat.

I didn't know about Loki's kids! I thought they were just creations lol! and no prob Krissy!
But yeah, Hera wanted kill Zeus because he's always going around sexing some other girl, mortal or not. Hera gets jealous because of it. I love astronomy! so much to learn! I wish I didn't had to pack my book.... I would have so much more stories up... >.>
And lets see.... about the raping.... my guess is that they hadn't seen a girl in forever cause, well, a lot of men are like that. Though I do like to see about the berserker legends! biggrin

I know Hera tried to kill Hercules by sending two snakes to kill him in his crib. But I never heard of her trying to kill Zeus.
Any way on topic yeah they are pretty close. But, a lot of Cultures have simular myths. Hey Dori! Do you know the Norse mythology story of creation? If you do you should post it! I'll post the greek story in the subby after I get off of work.

Alright. Let's see how much I can say about it in english xD
Well, once, there was an enormous giant named Ymer, born out of drops from when the cold winds of Niefelheim and the warm breezes of Muspelheim collided. A man and a woman was born out of one of his armpits and one of his legs conceived a son with his other leg. Ymer was fed with milk from his cow, Audhumbla. Audhumbla was fed with salt from a rock and after a time a face appeared. And later on a whole body was appearing. His name was Bore and later on he got a son named Bor, who married a giant named Betsla. Together they got Oden (Odin), Vile and Ve.
When they grew bigger and stronger, they wanted to kill Ymer, and so they did. From Ymer's body the world was created.
Sort of. I guess you can search more about it in books and the internet.

I really like the Norse gods because they could die, unlike the Greek gods, who were immortal. If they were fighting a battle, the Greeks would already know that they couldn't lose because they can't die. On the other hand, the Norse would be putting their lives on the line.
So morbid!! whee
