Baldr is hailed from Norse Mythology. His death is one of the most epic of all tales in all of their lore.
He is the second son of Odin (preceded by Thor). He is also noted as the most loved, wise, beautiful, merciful, and often associated with light.
One recollection states "Of him, all is good to report; he is the best, and all praise him".
So there came a night when Baldr had a dream that had alluded to his death. This obviously brought great worry unto him; which to contrast his normal character, worried all of the Aesir (the most predominant race of gods in Norse mythology).
So Odin had it spread that an oath was to be taken from all things, that none would harm Baldr. Since all loved Baldr, they committed to the oath. So the Aesir would take turns hurling axes, swinging sword, and firing arrows at Baldr. Much to their amusement, nothing would so much as scratch him.
Loki (considered a trickster god of the Aesir, but possibly not of their race) was made absolutely furious with jealousy by this and wished to find if it was true all things would not harm him. He discovered that all things but one took the oath, mistletoe (because it seemed too young).
So Loki fashioned a spear from Mistletoe and took it to the hall of the Aesir. At feast they were amusing themselves with taking weapons to Baldr with no avail. Loki went to Baldr's brother Hod (a blind Aesir) and asked him to hurl the spear at Baldr. When he did, it penetrated Baldr and he fell dead to the floor.
This of course caused all of the Aesir great dismay. So Odin sent forth Hermod to Niflheim (underworld) to retrieve Baldr. He is permited to use Sleipnir (Odin's and greatest of all horses) and crosses Gjallarbru (bridge between Earth and Niflheim). Upon arriving in Niflheim, he finds Baldr in it's most decorated seat in the greatest hall of Niflheim.
Hel (lady ruler of all Niflheim) tells Hermod, that if all things, living and dead weep for Baldr; he will be returned to life. Hermod returns the news to Odin, and Odin sends emissaries to request that all things weep for Baldr. All but one, an old woman named Thokk (presumably Loki in disguise) weep for Baldr. Thus it came that Baldr would remain in Niflheim.
This event is also recognized as the event that may lead to Ragnarok (the great battle between all the worlds which will cause a great change to the Earth).
That ladies and gentlemen is my somewhat lengthy summary of Baldr.
