Meaning: riven = broken/split, vanguard = guard/protector
Gender: male

Faction: RegenCo (Head Scientist)

Occupation: Dr Vanguard works as RegenCo's head scientist. His main project at the moment is developing more Synthesised Materia, in order to outfit RegenCo's members and combat the rising problem that is Salvati. Every so often he is given another project to work on concurrently, though the Synths take up most of his time.

Family: Parents Aylin and Mikail deceased, no siblings. Any other relatives unknown, presumed deceased as he never spoke of them, even when first coming to work for RegenCo. If the higher-ups know any differently, they're not telling.

Attitude: Riven comes off as a cold, unfeeling b*****d - and he has no problems with that. Dedicated to his work, he is nevertheless unhappy at being stuck in a lab all day and takes it out on the people around him. He's the sort to be more interested in general things than the specifics, focusing on the big picture. For example, he was excited about having created Synthesised Materia but finds the Synths themselves annoying, and will gloss over just about anything that RegenCo does as long as it's working towards goals he likes. Despite being cold to people upon meeting them, he gives a full range of emotions to his work - he rants and raves, he gets enthusiastic, is snarly when sleep-deprived after working on a project for several days and nights... and has been known to talk to the developing materia ^^;; Definitely business-minded and willing to be cut-throat to get what he wants.

Likes: Scientific experiments because they make sense and don't talk or ask stupid questions, and he loves the feeling he gets when they work. Guns, because they can be used to make stupid people shut up, and he likes how so much power is contained in something small and non-organic. Being physically active and working in the field, even though he doesn't get to do much of either anymore.

Dislikes: At least for the moment, Riven dislikes living things intensely. This has a lot to do with the fact that he is now stuck in a lab, so he blames his human superiors, and also the Synths, for keeping him there. Obviously, he's also not so fond of being stuck in a lab and being guarded since he is now a 'prized asset' of RegenCo for creating the Synths. He hates repeating himself or having to explain things in "layman's terms" - if you're not smart enough to understand his answers, then don't ask.

Hobbies: His job doesn't give him much free time, but if he does have any, Riven likes to nap in UV-lit areas (since he would have to go out of his way to find nice patches of real sunlight in the city). He also makes sure to spend some time at a shooting range every so often, to ensure he doesn't lose his field skills and work off his frustrations.

Quirks: Talking to materia/experiments o.O;;

Talents: Riven has a definite talent for logical thinking, planning, and for using and understanding technology. His experiments have succeeded beyond anyone else's expectations.

Background: Riven was born to a high-ranking executive in RegenCo and a materia expert working for RegenCo. Due to an argument with family in Alegria, Aylin and Mikhail left to raise their son away from the city. Mikhail died while away from their home village, taking his rare healing materia to another village. Aylin joined him soon after, leaving Riven alone at age 14, who then decided to return to the city. After joining RegenCo at 14, Riven trained and studied until age 18 when he joined a semi-secret military group, Noir. He was on active field duty as a gunner for five years, until age 23 when a mission went bad for Noir. The majority of the unit was killed, the few survivors badly injured and taken off field duty. Apart from flesh injuries, Riven also suffered damage to his eyes. Intensive medical and materia healing was attempted, and although Riv slowly got his eyesight back, it was never 100%. Riv now wore glasses full-time (though his vision is okay close-up) and was forbidden from returning to field duty, instead sent to work in the labs. It was here that he began work on synthesising materia. Experiencing success, he hasn't been allowed back to active duty (or any other kind of work other than in the labs) since.

Experience: Riven had been schooled since an early age, increasing his level of knowledge by the time he entered formal schooling at RegenCo. Due to his high marks, he was often allowed to assist professors in their labs (in low-level projects, of course, nothing overly important) and wrote his final thesis on artificially modifying the molecular structure and properties of materia. His promise in this area was what prompted the higher-ups of RegenCo to send Riven to the labs after his injuries healed. One and a half years into his own lab work, Riven was proven to be a scientific genius and was made Head Scientist after his creation of synthesised materia.

Current: Riven is still locked in his labs working on creating more Synths, while being 'guarded' (and pestered) by Daimos.

Rumour: The guards who take their shifts on the upper, lab levels of the RegenCo building whisper about the nature of the relationship between Dr Vanguard and his Synth, as Daimos is very affectionate to, and overly protective of, his summoner. Of course, they're careful to only use whispers and only when very far out of hearing range of the Doctor and his demon.

Daimos

The first Synth, Daimos is a combination of Diablos and Ultima. Humanoid in appearence, he lurks in Riven's labs, following the doctor like a bodyguard. Unpredictable and dangerous, he is very overprotective of, and strangely affectionate to, Riven. Very powerful, but mentally young. If he begins to float, run - it's your only warning of an attack.

Family

[Mother] ~ Aylin, deceased. Previously a high-ranking executive in RegenCo. She was the sort to put her own family above all else and home-schooled Riven after he was born. They had a very loving relationship.
[Father] ~ Mikail, deceased. A materia expert formerly working for RegenCo, left with Aylin to raise their son away from Alegria. Primarily worked with healing and defensive materia. Was close to his son, even if he worried over Riven's interest in technology.
[???] ~ Riven knows his parents originally left Alegria due to an argument with family. If he has any clue about who that family is and where they now are, he's not saying or showing any signs of looking for them.
