Tinnies can be used to refer to any can of booze.
I don't use it myself though.

The first time I heard it used was in reference to a wizard's duel.
You drink a tinny, take your next and duct tape it to the first. You then drink that one, and add another until you have a staff. When you feel it's big enough to do battle, you challenge someone to a duel.
