Well the title kind of says it all...

I think it would be interesting to hear from the source what people are trying to get across about themselves when they cosplay one character and not another. Just a few quick sentences, because you probably don't want to spill too much. wink

*EDIT* Extra/Optional discussion topic: Do you think it is more fun to cosplay a character you have a lot in common with, or more fun to cosplay a character who is very different from you?

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

I'll start, because I think mine is weird and cool. mrgreen

My favorite cosplay to do is Blind Riku from Kingdom Hearts, DeepDive. I have been trying to perfect this costume for 5+ years, though I have done others in the meantime.

The actual inspiration for this thread was something strange I heard from my mom's friend, who happens to be an astrologer. (Odd because my mom is an astronomer.) He does professional readings for $$, but I got a freebie. He's in his 60's, and never heard of Kingdom Hearts, nor have I ever mentioned it. He can't have heard about Riku from my mom either, because she's never played it, never even watched my brothers and I play, and doesn't know the character at all. I was told that, written in my stars, there are planets symbolizing "darkness" in conjunction w/ each other and the Sun, which is said to symbolize "the shining core of one's being"; one of those planets was even referred to formally as "the Lord of Darkness" (literal darkness, as in nighttime, not meaning Lucifer) ....And because of the exact position in the sky where this conjunction took place, astrologer-friend-guy said that the said-planet was "10x stronger than normal". ..........And so of course, being the immortally die-hard KH fan that I am, I could not help but notice a striking correlation to Riku's situation with Xehanort's Heartless.....

"Shining core" = heart
Saturn, "Lord of Darkness" = Xehanort, "Seeker of Darkness"

Look it up. .... eek

I'm not sure weather I think it's more fun to cosplay characters I have a lot in common with or not... I have a hard time finding characters I have a lot in common with, period.

Plus, my thinking is more directly this: the cooler the costume, the more fun it is to cosplay. (For instance, I'm dying to cosplay Diz someday, no matter what his character is like. Or Queen Mab from the movie Merlin, whom I attempted on Halloween, who just has this crazy voice....)

Mobility is good too. The harder it is to wear, the less fun I have. So at some point it can become a trade-off......

The character I have in common with is Rikku from FFX-2. She's omptimistic, ditzy, and very caring. Just like me. ^^ Though I don't have blond hair, so I'm using a wig. I'm going to cosplay as her soon.

I don't know if I have things in common with the characters I cosplay as, but I do know that one of the reasons I cosplay as a certain character is because I admire certain characteristics that they have. For example one of my favorite cosplays is Katsuya Jonouchi from Yu-Gi-Oh! I get a lot of grief from people who say that he's a loser, but for me he has a lot of the characteristics I admire: loyalty to death, honor, courage, a commitment to challenge himself and grow, and honesty. I think all of those things are very important and are something that I strive for. In the end, it's qualities that I admire that really influence my cosplay decisions so I suppose that's what I have in common with the characters I cosplay as.

That's something I hadn't thought of.... Great post! smile

I cosplayed oav Kenshin once just because I had the ponytale, some sword training, and was already making kimonos anyway. Other than that I don't think have anything in common with him.

So yeah I do know that your cosplay character isn't always meant to be like you on the inside.

I tend to cosplay characters who have short brown or dark blonde or sometimes black hair because of ease with my eyebrows and natural hair. But not all the time.

Personality wise though, I usually pick characters with open personalities who smile or like to make people feel good. Not neccessarily the hero, but on the side of good and helps out whenever possible. They usually have a lot of emotions they bury or try to hide, but they end up bursting out in the end. which is kind of me in a nutshell. I can take a lot of stuff being said about me to my face or behind my back but that one word that just makes me snap harder than Quatre blowing up a colony >.< Case in Point on chars I've done: Larsa (FFXII), Sora (KH2), Elk and Kite (.hack).

I've tried characters that I'm nothing like but similar to at the same time Cloud (in KH garb) and failed epicly at it. Costume and personality XD Link will probably be easier for me though because of my experience with that one >.>

I think its more fun to do someone I have something in common with than one I don't tho. Mostly because I tend to get more involved with the outfits and accessories

For me I go by characters who are like me have the same traights as I do like for example's the cosplays I have done so far
Chii from Chobits I did her because my fiancee tells me I'm allot like her in cuteness and lovable as for Hinata from Naruto I have her shyness and her legs and as for the Yugioh characters I did MAi Valentine because I use to go on a Yugioh chat thing as her but people say I'm more like Serenity Wheeler so I plan to do Serenity soon I also did Anzu twice it was lots of fun I love the Yugioh school iniform and I also did Kisara because she is my fave and I wanted to do an Eygptioan character and she is the only one with light skin like me plus my fiancee did Priest Seto and I love doing cosplay couples with my fiancee we also did Shiippuuden Naruto and Hinata together

Well, i did cosplay as miroku this year and everybody knows how comfortable he is around girls XD. sweatdrop Me on the other hand, i'm very nervous when it comes to talking to random girl XD. When i was in character at the con my friend was recording me and when i saw it i was shocked for not only how good i was in character and I WAS TALKING TO GIRLS! O.o
This year's Tyki Mikk form D.grayman, he very calm and doesn't want to lose his friends. I love my friends i don't want to lose them either, he also likes to dress up nice and i love to wear fancy clothes on occasion(when i have the money sweatdrop ) He also has the crazy sadistic side like i do when he's killing/attacking except for me i go psycho when i play fighting games with my friends XD

Well I've cosplayed a lot of characters. Usually I pick the characters that I have things in common with or I admire them. I've done two cosplays though that were requests....And boy were those hard to do.

Gwendal Von Voltaire of Kyo Kara Maoh is an amazing character and I love him to death. But he's so serious and calm, he doesn't usually smile...although he likes cute things. But that one was a bit of a challenge, although I pulled off the costume well. ^_^

Wufei Chang was another complicated one because he's usually serious and doesn't smile. I pulled him off well too, but my Duo ended up making me smile.....grrr....ebil Duo of mine! xD

The characters that I've cosplayed that are like me though would be: Shuichi from Gravitation, because I had short hot pink hair at the time, acted just like him, and I find it ironic that the person I was going out with was exactly like Eiri.

Lenalee from D Gray Man, because we can both be kind and caring plus we'll stand in the face of danger if it means protecting those we care about or just to protect others in general. She has a crazy older brother, I do too. And sometimes it's annoying having to put them in their place because they're being overly crazy but we do that too!

While Tifa is just someone that I cosplayed because I admire her so very much. She's strong willed, won't allow anyone to break her spirit, she says what she's thinking. Honestly, I just think she's a great character that would be wonderful to be like.

I've been told I look a little like a female Sasuke. Which apparently isn't an insult. I decided I'd make peace with my many years of Sasuke bashing (he's an easy target *shrug*) and I threw together a SNJ cosplay of him. I'm planning on bringing it out on halloween for a test run. ^^' wish me luck!

Weird in a good way

Good luck!

I've been told I look a lot like Katara from Avatar, but personally I think she's a lil annoying, tho mostly just because of how the writers handled her character more than any personal trait...

If I can get my bro to agree to cosplay Zuko someday, I'll definitely try Katara though. (Bro/Zuko semblance is FREAKY!!!! eek )

Hm... I think I cosplay characters that only slightly like me, so I can be comfortable, but are also very different from me, that way I can be a new person. A lot of the characters I pick were similar at first, but I have branched out, so it is hard to say what they are exactly like.

The first one I did I chose because I look like her (Quistis FF cool , but really I am kinda like her anyways, so it was just me wearing a semi weird outfit. Then I chose to do more characters that are not like me, just so I could have more fun being a non existing person.

Well .. I often go by looks
So like, I have a boyish face, but girly eyes
So I'm either a tomboy, or a girly boy

I'm not comfortable cosplaying girls with long hair or revealing clothes

Personality wise, I go don't like boring characters
I went to a con once, I was Rukia Kuchiki on saturday, and Yamada Hanataro on sunday. Rukia bored me to death, while Hanataro was just fun
I'm usually a lively character. Either really eccentric or really wimpy ^^

I tend to be the main character too
I'm trying to stop that

I always cosplay characters I love most. As weird as it is, they're usually similar to me and my friends bug me about that and say I'm conceited. u___u;;;

I can't help it though! I also usually like certain character types. I love tsundere girls, usually anyways. x3

One thing that was sort of fun but different was on Halloween I cosplayed a boy for the first time. And like, xDDD it was weird because I kept forgetting I was dressed up as a boy! Yay cosplay. <333
