I often enjoy thinking that reality is much the way a human body is; however, that may simply be because of my strange twist on Pantheism. I like to think there is this giant body of one-ness, and within it are systems (like gods/godesses of a planet), and then within this sytem are organs with specific functions (deities), and within the organs are humans/cells; not entirely separate but yet not quite the same as the organ we are flowing through.

I also recently likened human beings to stem cells. Other animals know their function and don't question it, but when we get dropped into place, we develop specific functions and strengths and contribute to the whole in our own way, and possibly based on what it needed, but who knows.
