Here's the deal. I want a serious, intellectual discussion about this. I will not accept any nonsense or anything immature. It will be deleted if it's not accompanied by something intellectual.
Now, I have been fascinated with this subject ever since my Mello snapped in the role play I do with Nightwingale.
Let me tell you what happened in the role play, mind you, I love torturing my Mello. So after the Kira case Mello and Matt were living together, not as lovers, but as best friends. Eventually they got together. At this point Mello was running a detective agency, but he was too unknown so he rarely got any work. He grew bored with life and wanted to become a criminal, big time one like Kira, just for the sake of there being some sort of excitement in his life. Just think about it, ever since he was 12/13 years old, he was following the Kira case. At 14/15 he was in the streets. At 19 he was already someone to be feared in the mafia. What I'm trying to say is that he never had a normal, mundane life, so when thrown into it, what would happen?
So, it is safe to believe that Mello grew bored. Eventually he got a job, well, a case that he needed to solve and once that was done, his company basically trashed. Why? Because I love ******** with him. Moving on. Matt has friends, Mello doesnt, so as Matt goes out and hangs out with his friends he grows more and more bored which turns into depression as he notices how empty his life is. Now that he is in this mundane life, his isnt as aggressive and really has no one to compete with, because there is nothing to compete for. So he feels that he has become something that Matt doesnt want. He tries his hardest to keep Matt happy and away from a bored life, all the while struggling with his inner thoughts and feelings. Is this my life now? I amounted to nothing. Should have I died back then? What is my purpose? Am I really cut out to be a detective? I cant even keep that as a job.
When Matt told him that he was bored, Mello snapped, and even though he was depressed, causing his body to become exhausted, he pushed himself to please Matt. He was frantic, thinking of places to go things to do. Should he wear normal clothes or leather? Which would Matt like best? Eventually he grew sick. Then as a last resort, he begged Matt to hang out with his friends, secretly so he could run away to Russia.
That's just what happened in the role play. Now, I do know that I made my Mello, that one at least, very weak and very emotionally unstable. I dont think Mello would really become that weak, but I do firmly believe that he would mentally snap. Like I said before, someone that had done so much, been in so much excitement, and knew only of danger, for most of his life, how would someone cope with normalcy in a mentally stable manner? I dont think it's possible. Sure human know how to adapt, but that was such a drastic change.
Well, that's what I think and I can go into more detail once I have something to reply to. And I just realized that I only talked about Mello. Maybe I'll make another post for what I think would happen with Matt.
Anyways, please tell me what you think and lets discuss this in an intellectual manner. Even if they are just fictional characters. XD
Ooh and yes I have read Mrs. Jeevas' work about them surviving. Dont think I copied her in any way shape or form, I've actually been thinking about this for a very long time, I just got more into it when my Mello snapped during the role play and thought even more about it after reading Mrs. Jeevas' work.

Seeing as no one cares to reply, I will add what I think would happen to Matt. There are a a few possibilities, all mostly depending on Matt's relationship with Mello.
In scenario 1: There are people that believe that Matt and Mello are neither best friends nor lovers, so if we take the route, what could likely happen if Matt lived would he will return to Mello, get his payment, since people also like to believe that Matt did it for the money, though I much rather not get into how I dont believe that, that's for another post, and he would just leave Mello. And, it is safe to think that Matt can handle a relatively normal life, since it is believable that he had a normal life before Mello hired him. So, even if he was a sort of hacker for hire, or something of that sort, he would not suffer a crippling of the mind, like I think Mello would suffer through. He would just return to a life of relative solitude, because if you look at his stats on How To Read, you'll see that he is not a very social person. And since he doesnt care much about what goes on around him, I think that the loss of Kira wouldnt affect him like it would affect Mello.
In scenario 2: If we take the oh so popular Matt and Mello being best friends and/or lovers, I believe that Matt would crack a bit under pressure. Since he is a reclusive and seemingly rather lazy boy, he wouldnt be able to mentally handle the crumbling mind of his lover/best friend. In effect, his own mind would go as well. He could become desperate trying to fix Mello and probably not notice that he, himself, needs help as well. He will see the strong Mello fall apart. If Mello could break, what's to stop Matt from breaking as well. Or he could grew frustrated with Mello, end up lashing out on the boy and just make things worse for the two of them.

Well I agree with everything you wrote, so there's not much to add. xd At first I thought this was just going to be a lame topic along the lines of, "Wut if Matt and Mellow lived?!!1?1!?" And I was just going to put, "Duh. They'd get married." But instead I found myself in an intellectual debate! xd
I agree that Mello would snap. It's just his nature to lose it once the world doesn't need him anymore. And I agree the Matt would crash as soon as Mello did. (And I agree, he wasn't just after money. You relating back to the anti-MxM manifesto?)
And of course, Mrs. Jeevas' work pretty much paints a decent picture on how all that would pretty much go down. Though I admit, I like your portrayal of this as well. I wish I could read the posts-- that sounds very intriguing.

Ooh no, I may fangirl over them, but when I want to discuss something it's all seriousness. As for the whole "Matt did it for the money." I remember being in a discussion about how Matt could have possibly only wanted money (for video games XD) and not because he had any real ties with Mello. I also remember FlyingWyvern's fanfic "Binary Helix" where she writes the story of MxM meeting up and again and talking about how they were never friends and how Mello basically just wants to use him. So I thought of that as one of the possibilities. Not that I believe that there isnt anything between them, friendship or more. Yes, I greatly enjoyed Mrs. Jeevas protrayal of it, mainly because she went so indepth on the whole psychological aspect of Mello's mind basically snapping, and I'm such a psychology junkie. (XD) I know you have a livejournal, I saw you post that funny Matt pic on the MelloMatt community. If you are interested in talking about Mello in a serious discussion add me. http://saigocage.livejournal.com/I have a post up there with a conversation between Pro_Kira and I about Mello's religion and Mello's origins. It's gonna be silly once you see how much we talking about Mrs. Jeevas' Mello. XD It cant be helped, he's so interesting! i agree sadly that does sound like what would happen. so either way they would die xp thats just sad but we fangirls deny that reality and make them go on with there lives. man those emo fanfics are so true *pats the emo fanfic creators heads* im sorry i denied the sad and logical truth. But i wonder what would happen if near died instead of matt and mello.

No no no, in my theory Mello nor Matt would die. Plain and simply their minds would collapse. They will becoming mentally and emotionally unstable, but eventually be able to pull out of it, some how. Depending on certain situations. Other than that, once they pull through, they should be slowly, but surely moving forward to a more stable way of living.
Originally Mello was supposed to live. Mello was supposed to defeat Kira. If Near died and not Mello. I think that one is rather simple. One of two things could happen. Mello will defeat Kira and then assume the title of L, since by default, it will be his. Or! Mello will defeat Kira and then basically go back to my original theory and have a mental break down. This is the more likely, since, by defeating Kira, he ultimately defeats both Near and L, which was his goal, and he did hand Near the title as L on a silver plater, so if given the chance to reclaim it, after having already forfeited it AND defeated Near and L without the title, it proves that he doesn't need it and probably will not take it.

Matt had to exist. He was created for the sole purpose of moving Mello's character along. Basically, he was made so Mello would have someone to talk to after all his mob lackies died. ooh and another thing, if Matt didn't exist, then Mello couldn't formulate his plan and he would have to either come up with a different one or look for someone else, ultimately, another version of Matt.
Really? What's confusing. I'll explain if you really want to know.

wow ur really smart with this kind of stuff well what if misa never exisisted im sure the story would really change or if her parents were never murdered. then light wouldn't have misa to help him rule the world right!?

Lets see, first off, Misa was a nuisance. Light didn't think of her helping him save the world. He didn't want her around and if it didn't make him look suspicious, he would have killed her soon after Rem's death.
What would have happened if she never got a Death Note. The case would have been prolonged and Light might have never been found out. Now, I don't know the first arc of the story as well as I do the second one, so I might miss some things. For what I remember, the main reason that Light was highly suspected to be Kira was that they confirmed that Misa was indeed the second Kira and they knew that there was a connection between Misa and Light. Cut Misa out, now where is the evidence that suggestions that he is Kira? There is none. Light might have even gotten away with it if Misa never showed up. MIGHT! Like I said, I don't know the full details of this part of the story, so I might be missing other evidence that pointed to Light being Kira.

L would have solved the case and Mello would have never joined the mafia and the SPK would have never been created. We would have never been introduced to Wammy's House.

I don't know if you have read the special one shot that takes place 3 years after Light's death. In that one shot, that scenario happens. Shinigami's would send down Death Notes and give it to people. The ones that got it could not mentally handle the pressure of killing so many people and eventually being persecuted by the cops and maybe one day L. They would just freeze up and the shinigami eventually takes the book back to their realm.
