It was wonderful back in the day. Technological advances were at their high point. The world economy was in shambles. People were close to rioting, but at least the world had enough weapons to keep itself in check. Clean energy was powering billions of homes. Nuclear energy was powering most of the other establishments. Most cities had two nuclear plants for every clean energy plant. Yes, 2057 was a glorious year. Until the genocide of the Human Race began.
A WMD test in France is how it all began. Some wires were mis-crossed. All evidence however was obliterated with every person in one hundred miles. Tensions had been high at this point with the US. The government didn't know the story, fingers were pointed, and old alliances became a horrible reality. Two hours, the world's population had two hours to reach shelters. They doomed themselves, traffic jams were made, people couldn't get away from the large and once glorious cities they had constructed. Their expansion proved to be their demise.
And so civilization ended.
Nuclear winter hit, radiation from the fried Nuclear Reactors picked off the mammals before long. Not a single dog, not a single horse would ever roam the world again. The few people that survived either were lucky enough to get into a shelter, or lived in a rural enough area not to get hit by radiation or the blast radius. Those who were lucky were able to build Igloos that wouldn't collapse on them, using snow that the unnatural winter brought. Plant life died from lack of sun, the radiation, or both. Surface fish died because of the drastic temperature changes. Freshwater fish died due to radiation. The few birds that survived the temperature could not find food, and died years later. Earth was a wasteland.
Humanity lost all semblance of it's once great self. Without crops, without animals, only the dead proved a source of food. The few who had sharp objects were the ones who made it through the fifty year winter. Cloths ripped and tore over the years. When those ran out, there was only one source left. Sons wore the skins of their fathers, and the other dead. It was for survival, morality meant little in comparison. Without medicine disease killed quickly, lack of nutrition killed many others. Without anything to make fire Hypothermia claimed scores of victims. Radiation killed those who were stupid enough to cross it.
Out of billions a few thousand survive to see the sunlight again. With life expectancy lowered to around thirty years people searched quickly for others, and communities were made. All thought of technology was lost to time, all of human history was lost. A group in eastern Europe found a computer, probably the only one left. It belonged to a museum, and was powered by a small underground hydroelectric generator. It was voice activated, which was lucky for the technology-deprived humans. A lot of the data was corrupted, but they learned some valuable information, they learned of tools. With no way to mine metal and forge it using fire, humans had to revert to simpler means, rocks and stones. Mankind had been sent back before the Dark Ages. No medicine was in existence, no computers survived save the one. No metal to forge blades, and no knowledge, or materials to make fires. Not everything was bad though, people were alive. The computer taught them about spears and shields, along with other ancient tools.
So began civilization's reconstruction. People mostly resided in Eastern Europe, not as much of the land was contaminated, and communities began to spring up there. Over the fifty years that followed Mankind began to grow much more. Technology was lost, livings were basic. The houses were made of sod, the tools made of stone, but Humanity lived. Few plants survived the lightless, fifty year winter. the ones that did were quickly discovered to be a food source. Men still feasted on their dead comrades for food, they had little else. Many plants were grown simply because of an accidental discovery, they burned. The first few fires that were generated by lightning were marveled, and used as a heat source, only after several did people start collecting the coals to be used again. Burning more plants to keep the fires going. The practice has carried for the past fifty years.
More than one hundred and fifty years after humanities collapse, it is a small fraction of what it was. Radiation kept most areas uninhabitable. The population, now a large 1.9 million, kept to Eastern Europe, where many people had already gathered, and the radiation wasn't as fierce. Eventually the semblance of three nations were created. Kamaria inhabits what was once Western Russia, and holds most of the only wood sources remaining on earth. Faen lies West of Kamaria, and takes up much of what was once far Eastern Europe. The Shenva Province holds the smallest amount of land. Inhabiting what once was Greece, the North-West Middle East, and South Eastern Europe.
Christianity failed greatly in the years following the Fallout. Faen is the only nation that openly practices it. They were the closest thing to a socialistic government, with no money bartering was the only way to transfer goods. It gave the men who worked a free pass to get certain goods such as cooked food. It was the same system used by the nations to pay their soldiers, it was the only way they could. Armed with Javelins, Spears, and Slings the soldiers only had thick, Human Leathers to defend themselves, the more privileged had wooden shields.
The Shenva Province followed a theocracy. They were run by a Selected, a person who was in contact with The True Almighty. A form of the Christian God who directly tried to improve mortal's lives. The Shenva Province was peaceful, but it didn't have many soldiers. The only thing that kept Faen or Kamaria from claiming it's lands were the many pockets of radiation that polluted The Shenva Province. Thousands of lives would be lost in an assault. So The Shenva Province was left alone. For the most part, they were the only nation who had access to the sea. And the salt that was left after the water evaporated was exported to the other nations.
The Republic of Kamaria was the strongest military wise. Their boarders were the largest, their population the highest. The people elected the men that ruled them. They also had access to almost all of the new-world's wood sources. They weren't stupid though, they knew to keep the peace. Any war would be devastating, to them, and to the nation they fought. The world didn't need that so soon.
The world didn't have much of a choice however. Tensions were growing as disputes were raised over uncontaminated land. Food was becoming another issue. Farms weren't producing enough, and not enough men were dying. War could solve both those problems easily. Even worse, the people knew it. The soldiers actually wanted war, and the people would easily accept it. Mankind never learns from it's mistakes. With history destroyed it makes it rather hard to. Border clashes have begun between Faen and Kamaria. It's only a matter of time until The Shenva Province gets involved.
And the cycle of war will repeat again.
