I was contemplating the other day: what if the elements are only as effective as say a wand or sword in casting? Maybe they are just tools to help us direct something from ourselves at something we would like to change. Of course, I use the elements in gathering energy constantly, but maybe rather than accumulating it, I am generating it. I'm not saying this is what I think, I just thought I'd throw it out there in case someone wanted to help me play with this idea.

It depends on what I am doing rather a directly call upon the elements, simply set out figurines that represent (for me) each one, or don't use them at all. If I am working on a major spell, I always call the elements and use the figurines. but if it is something non-tasking and simple I don't usually bother.
Plus it also depends on where I am and what I have tool wise when I cast. if it is a spur of the moment thing I almost never deal with the element, but I do call upon my goddesses and gods to guide me.
I also cross myself (similar to Catholics), but for me it represents my main four goddesses/gods, four elements, and four directions all at the sametime. It is like a quick super charged pray.
*Note I have never had anything to do with Catholicism (at least in this life- I have MAJOR past life issues with the Catholic church, they occasional filter into my current one). The crossing myself just felt right and then I realized how many things it represents for me.

My take is that the elements contain inherent energy and generate energy of their own, that energy helps drive the natural cycles required to keep the Earth functioning as it does. I beleive we can use tap into it to help charge our magic. I don't see it as a tool like a wand or bolline that need consecrated before use. Tools don't come with in inherient energy they come with random energies they have picked up and require the user to cleanse it then attune it to their personal energy. Elements do not. Forces of nature vs. manmade instruments.
