This thread is to discuss the what ifs of history, I am interested in history, as that is the reason I joined this guild, to chat with others who enjoy history as well... One thing I enjoy about history is what happened at that time to make what happened happen. I have always thought of questions like... What if the Russian soldiers at Stalingrad didn't hold off the Germans? What if Franz Ferdinand survived Sarajevo? If you enjoy this side of history, thinking about what might have been then this thread is for you smile I look forward to chatting with you other people and I will start the discussion.
What if the Japanese battleship Yamato was not destroyed?

If you do not know what the Yamato was, then here is some details on what it was.
The Yamato was the largest battleship ever constructed, and it was named after the ancient japanese Yamato province, The ship was in the Japanese Imperial Navy and weighed 65,027 tons and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 in) main guns. The Yamato was built in total secrecy and never saw any war time until its demise at the hands of the Allied ships. The Japanese sent the Yamato to fight the enemy vessels by itself. Howsabout if the League of Nations had intervened in Manchuria? Whould that have led to certain facist leaders seeing that precidence set and thus prevented WWII? Would it have led to a far worse war, in doing so?

What if Quebec did separate from the rest of Canada? And then what about the other provinces that it connects to the rest of the country?

What if the South had won the Civil War and seceded?
The world would be realllly different. I mean, eventually the slaves would have a major revolt, of course, but for a few generations in between it would just be hugely different.

^^^ Harry Turtledove wrote some wonderful alternative history on that subject. He envisioned a world where the South beat the North and the US was divided into the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. He further develops this bringing this forward to the First World War, having the United States allied to the Germans and the Confederate States allied to Britain, resulting in an American Front. Fascinating read for students of the Civil War - I highly recommend him!

What if the Library at Alexandria hadn't been destroyed, taking all of the records and documents it held with it? Think of all the historical insight we might have now.
What if the Titanic never sank? Would ships continue to not carry enough lifeboats, resulting in even more deaths? Would the US Coast Guard's Ice Patrol branch have never been formed?
This is fun. smile

"What if Franz Ferdinand survived Sarajevo?"
I have wondered the same thing, in fact. Things probably wouldn't be that much different, however, since they'd start fighting over the "principle of the thing".

Some other good former USSR ones:
What if Trotsky would have succeeded Lenin instead of Stalin? What if the USSR would have focused its economy on feeding the people instead of having an arms race with the US (more than 50% of their economy was put into this)?
Oh, and one other fun US one:
What if the Bay of Pigs would have succeeded?

What if Hitler had got into art school instead of doing the fascism thing? What if he hadn't been gassed in WW1? (You're right, this is fun).
