Haha, good plan.
I've sold the duplicate rings I've gotten. I had like five million of those rock rings, which aren't worth hardly anything but whatever. xD
And the only item I've made so far is the rolled up newspaper, none of the bad guys want to drop ingredients for me and I'm too stubborn to buy them.

Someone pointed out a loophole to me - just do stuff on a mule and send the recipes over to it to get made. You wind up repeating the first parts of the game a bit, but at least they're easy.
