Fan Fiction and Other Writings

I Grew Up with Percy

I like it. Very insightful about Percy and Ron.

The Percy Conspiracy

She brings up a good point that I hadn't thought up before...

Pro-Percy Anti-Molly

I'm not anti-Molly, just FYI, even though I agree with the second half. The first half provides some really good insight into Percy's character.

Sooo....now that the thread is all set up, what do people have to say about Percy?

W00t! Ask and ye shall recieve! whee But anyway... I guess I understand why people hate Percy so much (okay, scratch that, it's blazinglly obvious), but I think they're all being a little harsh... I love Percy, in a... 'you're a jerk!' sort of way... He's an interesting character and he's made his mistakes... but JK said that the sorting hat has never been wrong and I think this applies to Percy. He's brave, strong and loyal, just like all the other Gryffindors, he's just misguided. I also think that his Gryffindor-ish qualities will not only show through in the end, but also be vital to some or all of the Weasley's survival. I'm too lazy to write a huge long essay now... but I will eventually 3nodding

I feel bad for Percy. Whenever you look at the Weasley family it's BillandCharlie, FredandGeorge, RonandGinny, Percy. There is no "and" for Percy.

Percy is just the right age that he would have been old enough to know what was going on during Voldemort's time, but not old enough to understand. He wouldn't know why Daddy was always away and had no time for him while Bill and Charlie would, and the others were to young for it to really matter anyway.

I think that not understanding why has stuck with Percy, and translated into a desperate need for attention and affection. To Percy, the only way to get what he so craves is to do something good. So, he spends all his time trying to the best. Trying to out-do everyone to make up for his feeling of being left out.

Then, his father tells him that the ONLY reason he was raised up in the ministry was because he was supposed to spy on his family. It was nothing Percy had done, and everything to do with the family Percy probably feels doesn't love him even though he loves them.

I'm sorry, but in Percy's position I would probably have acted the same.

I don't really like Percy very much, but I see what you're saying. I've said it before and I still think it, that in the next book Percy should be the one to apologise to his family, and when he does, and realises that they do still love him even after him being such a p***k, he'll turn into an awesome character. And this time it has to be genuine, not as an excuse for Scrimgeour to get Harry alone. But I do think that JK will do that for him. If she doesn't it would be inconsistent with her, "Dumbledore had the right idea with his second chances, look at Hagrid, look at Lupin, and Sirius. So yeah, he made mistakes like Snape and that was dumb, but benefit of the doubt, give them that." message.

Percy is one of those extremely complex characters. Although the book just describes him as "ambitious" I think their is more to him. He definitely has some Slytherin-like qualities to him- "Will do anything to achieve their ends" and he is also brave in his own sort of demented way, like how he is fearless with his career. In otherwords he didn't hesitate with his career choice, he didn't fear the Ministry, and knew what he wanted to be. He strives to achieve and I believe, as Reggie said, wanted to be praised by his parents, more so, his father.

Charlie was the Quidditch Player, Bill was Head boy (And I assume was a hottie) and Percy was their doing his best in his grades. He then became Prefect and Head boy (And we only saw Mrs. Weasley praising him, not Arthur) and then followed his dad into the Ministry, which I thought was kind of cute that he aspired to be known in the Ministry.

In a way I think he is rather like me, reckless in his desire to prove himself to his parents and siblings.

Well done for putting it like that Lunar. I hadn't really seen him in that sort of light before, just craving attention from his father. But that would explain why he reacted the way he did when Arthur implied that he was achieving because Fudge and Scrimgeour wanted to spy on his family, not his own accomplishments. That would gut me if I was him.

I love Percy. I really do. And at a moment he will start protesting against Scrimgeour.
"He's a human, not a puppet! You can't try to make him do something he doe not want to do!"
Because Minister&co will probably try to force Harry in being the ministry puppet.
Percy will get himself fired, and will go back to his family, getting goo all overhimself (courtesy of F&G).

Fred, George and Ginny all took credit for the mashed parsnip incident, remember.
He had ample opportunity in HBP to protest against the Ministry trying to use Harry, but I suppose there's still time in the next book.

@Parking Lot: when are you going to finish that fanfic with Harry and Draco? That was funny!

I think Percy will return for Bill's wedding. Whether or not you dislike your family, and I don't think Percy really DOES hate them as hard as he tries to convince himself he does, an event like that is difficult to stay away from.
