I've been thinking of making some automail for a while, but this just occurred to me as I read your post. Perhaps buy a large PVC pipe (large enough that you can easily fit your arm inside it, but not too thick in the wall if you can help it) and cut it into short segments, or rings. Then cut the segments "longways" so that the circles they make are cut in half, in quarters, or in thirds. Kind of like slicing a bell-pepper, but allowing the 'chunks' to be thicker so that they become more like 'plates', or even what might be called 'dragon scales'. Then, either drill holes in the segments and lace them together with string for the arm (and repeat the same process with a narrower pipe for the fingers), or glue/fix them to an under-sleeve-and-glove somehow.
You can then sand and paint/spraypaint it silver. (Or, use chrome metallic ducttape, which I have seen for sale at hardware stores, too.)
The more I think about it, the more I like this idea; Meaning I may attempt an entire suit of armor in this fashion, as lately, I have been dreaming of attempting one...... surprised
Good luck on your cosplay!

Hmm, my dad thinks that a 6'' diameter pipe would be 100's of $, so I looked online. I still have no idea how much such large pipes would be, but this site looks promising, at least as far as just having the darn thing is concerned....

Although a rather late reply, wonderflex does wonders for this. FAQ on Wonderflex The one that made the thread has pictures up of the automail that she made using it.
