I've just recently started reading a new series of Shelock Holmes stories by Nancy Springer, in which she has created a much younger sister (age 14) for Mr. Holmes (and brother Mycroft) named Enola. I'm finding it a great read, because it seems to be historically accurate to the position of women and girls in the era in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote.

Has anyone else read this series? What about other Holmes variants?

Sounds like I should add that one to my list of books to read. I love Sherlock Holmes, and books inspired by the original characters can be quite good.

I'm sure I've read other variants of the stories, but I can't recall any at the moment. I'll make certain I share them if they come back to me.

The nice thing about the Enola Holmes books is since they were intended for younger readers, they're fast reads.

Another series I enjoy starts with The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie King. This one is written for adults, and is much meatier, though still well-researched. It's also set in Holmes's later years, when he has retired to tend bees in the countryside.

That one I believe I have heard of. When I took that fiction course last year the prof recommended several books based on the characters of Watson and Holmes. I should look for the titles and read them. Then maybe I can recommend them too. smile

I think there's a whole sub-genre of fiction based on variations of Conan Doyle's works. smile

The oldest I can remember is The Seven-Percent Solution, though I've never read it, and it might not be the oldest.

That was one of the ones that my prof raved about. He spent nearly a full lecture telling us how amazing it was, and that we should all go out and buy a copy.

Edit: I just looked it up, and I can see why he brought it up. It is an alternate explanation of the years that Holmes was presumably dead, before being brought back by Conan Doyle. The novel that we studied (The Last Sherlock Holmes Story) was an alternate explanation of his death. Maybe I should try to get a copy. biggrin

I've read the Seven Per Cent Solution and the West End Horror and they're both good. I prefer to think of Moriarty as Sir Doyle originally wrote of him, but Nicholas Meyer is an excellent author. I read The Last Sherlock Holmes Story recently and it is absolutely bizarre, but the last scene made me cry. One of the books I'm currently reading is The Affair of the Incognito Tenant by Lora Roberts (apparently not a well-known author) and it's okay so far. Sherlock is hiding from Moriarty's gang by moving to a small town in Sussex and being a beekeeper, but then someone is murdered and the town thinks a vampire did it.

I'm reading a particularly engrossing novel called Dust and Shadow where Sherlock Holmes is going up against the likes of Jack the Ripper. Needless to say I am enjoying it a lot so far.

My current love and obsession is Laurie R. King's series. A very different take on Sherlock so far.
