Pidge - or Crinkeleaf, as she was doing her best to remind herself - sat nestled comfortably on a branch, peering around with newly blue eyes. That was one change she didn't have to get used to, at least, since she obviously couldn't see her own eyes. She had a new territory, a new name, even a new type, thanks to some clever feather dye. She wasn't an Aberrant anymore, put-down and heckled, but a proper, respectable Deep Woods.

She was normal, and that was the most difficult thing to get used to. Now she had to teach herself to act normally, to be confident and proud, even haughty - anything but the shy and self-effacing individual she was trying to leave behind. Of course, this intention was all well and good, but she had yet to be tested. For now, she sat and brooded, mulling over the possibilities her new future might hold.

Foxfeather was doing what he always did best, Watching. Sure, there were many other tasks that might of been more exciting, but he liked this. He liked to know just what was going on, exactly, and spent a great amount of time aloof in Deep Woods.

This particular evening, the Watcher was further out in the colder areas of the forest. This wasn't exactly his best idea, for he was small in body and wasn't exactly suited for life in the more chilly areas. Fortunately the weather hadn't changed completely.

The reddish feathered Deep Woods roused his feathers as a cool wind gusted past his particular chosen limb. He was fairly sure he was not in another sentinel's territory. He would notice if he was, wouldn't he? He had been sitting and watching for a while, but nothing really caught his interest...

Until recently, this hadn't been anyone's territory, but that was before the quiet new Watcher had moved in. It certainly wasn't much of a territory, but for a Minder-raised nobody just starting out, it was fairly typical. Fortunately, the chill was no bother for her, thanks to whichever parent of hers had been a Mist. Pidge herself had no idea at all, though it was something she thought about often.

She did a lot of thinking, really, which explained how she missed the arrival of another. It was several long minutes before she did, and when she did finally notice, part of her wanted to pretend she hadn't and hope he'd just move on without noticing her. But that was Pidge, and she was supposed to be Crinkleleaf, and so she let out an inquisitive hoot.

The young male's eartufts lifted as he caught a curious hoot on the wind...

He blinked and slowly turned his head towards the sound. Had he intruded? He certainly didn't intend to. The nippy temperature had him slightly on edge, but he really didn't have much to gripe about on this particular night, though if he would of thought about it seriously, he certainly would of found something to dwell on unhappily.

Instead, he returned the hoot. She didn't seem angry, but he felt the need to apologize. She was a Deep Woods after all.

it wasn't until closer inspection that he realized just how pretty this particular one was. Her plummage was certainly beautiful. He moved to a nearer limb and offered her a light smile on his beak edges.

"Terribly sorry if I am trespassing. I did not realize that this particular patch of forest... Belonged to someone?" His words came out like silk, as they often did, but he choked for a moment. What was he thinking, again?

Pidge worked her hardest not to fidget, willing herself to be calm and still, and to fight her reflex to sleek her feathers and mumble an apology for nothing in particular - for existing, maybe. The result was a rather tense posture, but it was a step in the right direction. She was too busy with it all to notice much about the male's appearance.

"I-it's alright," she said after a moment, immediately giving herself a mental scolding for the nervous start, "It didn't, until...until a few days ago."

"Oh, so you're new... Uh." His words were lost on his beak once more as he watched the female. Great. He only just started talking and she was already unhappy. He had that effect on sentinels, but it wasn't always intentional.

"New to here, I mean. To this area in the north. It's nice. I'm just wathcing, though. I don't live near here." He was never one for charm with the females, that was for sure.

"anyways, I hope you like it here."

He was acting sort of...strange? It was a little hard to tell, since she wasn't used to civil exchanges in the first place, but his halting way of talking was a bit similar to hers. The realization that he seemed awkward, too, assuaged her nervousness somewhat.

"So...you're a Watcher, too? Where are you from?" It was a hesitant question she should have thought about more before asking; what if her asked where she was from? Her mind raced as she tried to think of an answer to such a potential question.

"Uh? Oh. Yeah, I'm a Watcher. I'm staying closer to Deep Woods, now, but I used to live pretty far south. My folks settled their and whatnot. They're pretty well known, 'specially my father. Maybe you heard of Dogwood?" Of course they weren't all that special. He was just raised to believe so. Dogwood might of been an Elite, but he certainly wouldn't be known all over the forest, like Foxfeather seemed to believe.

"Anyways, do yeah. This place isn't that well known to me." He hardly gave her a chance to digest the information as he tried to move on. She seemed a little less nervous.

"How 'bout you?"

"No? I'm, um...I'm afraid not." The answer was hesitant, and a touch on the apologetic side. But what if she should know about this Dogwood? "I, uh...I'm not from the south, though. Maybe that's why." And maybe it was a passable excuse?"

"Me?" Even though she'd half-expected it was coming, the question still surprised her a little; after all, she wasn't used to others being interested in her. "Oh, n-nothing special. I was Minder-raised."

Her answer seemed to satisfy him enough. If she was from the North, her chances of knowing were slim, after all, so he wouldn't hold it against her. He was smiling now, a gesture that was a little unusual for him. "Yeah, that's probably why. It's okay, though."

"Me?"

He nodded his head and waited for a reply; his ear tufts twitched slightly as his interest in her grew.He watched, after all, so getting to know her might be good, right? He'd be protecting the interest of this area. That was his excuse for talking to this young Deep Woods.

"Oh, minders, huh?" So she didn't have a perfect lineage like himself... Well, maybe that would be excusable, too. She was a Deep Woods and her markings didn't look tainted, at least from his distance to her. "Must of been noisy, what with all the other fledglings about."

Pidge perked up a little when he forgave her for not knowing his parents. It was working! She was doing it right! So far, anyway. "Yeah, it was...noisy. Very noisy." In a traumatic sort of way. The Watcher fidgeted a little, unable to help it completely. "I'm...I'm Crinkleleaf, by the way."
PostPosted: Thu Oct 30, 2008 8:39 pm

Of course the reason for his forgiveness was... Well, just based on how well the artisan who painted her could weild a brush. Her plummage appeared flawless, so maybe they just couldn't raise that many eggs...

Yeah, that had to be it.

"Crinkleleaf? Nice, nice... Uhm, very." He grew silent again with a sort of awkwardness that he did not usually feel. Fox was a little too full of himself and he was struggling to keep his words, oh what do they call it... Nice?

"Foxfeather, that's me." He fluffed his feathers and beamed with a sense of pride that he had imagined for himself. The famous Foxfeather... He was sure one day that his name would ring through every territory in the forest.

"Thanks." Her eartufts lifted, and her fidgeting quieted. She'd thought it was a nice name, and it was good to know she'd been right. Of course, it was hard to get worse than Pidge - it was practically 'pigeon.' "Foxfeather's very nice, too. Very fitting."

Now that she was a little more relaxed, she could take the time to notice his handsome, reddish color...not that she was interested! That sort of thing could totally blow her cover.

He fluffed with pride as she commented on his name. All she was doing was preening his already overly inflated ego. She was pretty, appeared pure, and she liked his name, that was good enough to win him over.

He took time to stretch his wings as she looked him over, then absentmindedly preened a feather.

"Thank you... I take after my ma, really. I'm glad, 'cos she's what gave me all this reddish color. My pa was sort of... Plain, I guess."

"Plain's not so bad," she mused, bobbing her head a little, "But the red is real nice." Pidge was certainly enjoying being plainer than she had been, but it was all relative. If you could be striking and a proper type, that was a whole different sort of thing.
