Can you provide more details? Does it work on other systems? What kind of microphone is it? Does it not work with the system in general for with certain programs? Did you search the Ubuntu forums? I can go ahead that you are not the first person to have this problem and I'm sure a solution to your problem is already there.

It worked on windows, its a regular mic jack microphone. Its the only problem im really having with linux. ive checked the forums dozens of time.

What sound card do you have and is ALSA configured to work with the Mic in?

Sorry but if you can not provide the needed info this is all I can do to help because I do not use *buntus after a painful experience with it, don't use mics so don't need to set them up. There seems to be several methods to getting your mic working in the above links I hope that one of them will help you.
