I just found this awesome dude whom I could easily and would totally cosplay, but then I found out that he's someone's original character, and was like..........darn. [link] [link]
So, my question is, has this ever happened to you? And what did you end up doing about it?
It's happened to me once before, too, actually with an original character that there really are no pictures of; But based on the author's description, I have all the necessary items in my closet, and they're just such a cool character story-wise. whee
A pic that I myself drew
** Feel free to mention any of your own OCs which you have cosplayed/intend to cosplay! I may end up doing one of mine who is a mad-science prodigy named......er, i mean, i should not speak such blasphemies. ninja wink

I've personally never done it because unless it's really fantastic it's just not going to stand a chance in a competition here and there's enough costumes out there that're so under done because they're harder than most, but I've seen quite a few people on con forums that I've been to talk about it and some do it and they looked wicked!
To be fair I like to go for elaborate costumes for the challenge of making them, so when I see something like bleach, naruto, death note, lucky star etc I'm just not interested unless its one of the really obscure characters like Rem or a full body suit because I can see a lot of work has been put into making it. The problem I've seen a lot with OC cosplaying is that it's too easy to make up a character with a really simple costume, just so it's easy to make but so you can still be original and brag about it. Looking at the last con I went to there was one member who was planning characters that she'd created herself but they all looked amazingly dull and were just wearing normal clothes but she still kept on about how original they were.
I think I admire someone much more if they either do their OC because they truely feel connected to the character and aren't just doing it for braggin rights do someone else's OC because in the majority of cases I've seen they've picked characters with really fantastic costumes that's going to challenge them. I've also seen a lot of modifications to costume's that have been good, such as formal versions of the costume, that Rinoa one that lots of people are doing now or one that I'll always remember a kimono version of the Heartless design with a big embroidered heart logo on it. Something like that where you change the design but still make it elaborate looks wonderful and you're still easily recognised. Just to note I hate the gender swap or theme characters when some think it counts to just put the character in any old dress or just so they can wear their own clothes with a wig and claim it "L as a girl" or "Punk/emo/goth/casual X character". It's boring and you're really put to shame when a group comes along with a really good theme like the Halloween Orgy 13 group that recently went to London Expo.
I think however, the main problem people instantly think of when they want to do an OC is if they're going to be recognised or not, which is important for some people. Sure, very few people are going to know your character specifically, but most people that take photos at cons do it because they like the costume. Obviously if you've got a really great costume people are still going to want photos of you even if they don't recognise you're character. The reason I've spotted OCs in the past is because they're costumes have been really impressive. I've passed people who've been dressed in random punk/rave gear only to find out after the eveny online that they were apparently cosplaying someone. If you're cosplaying a character who does dress in just normal or gothic clothes a lot of people are going to think you're not cosplaying and just pass you by.
I think if you're cosplaying your own OC because you really love the character you've created them with your heart and soul that's great no matter what the costume is like. If someone does it for attention though and for bragging rights about originality then it's just not really worth it unless the costume really is impressive and really unique.

I've done original cosplays before, but never for an actual convention. Just a private photoshoot, and have them up on "Cure"... It's pretty common.
I've never done someone else's original character before, though.

I write novels and short stories, and I often like to cosplay as the characters. After all, I can completely pull off the character because I created it! Also, it's a bit of a challenge to put together because I tend to like complex outfits. After all, what's the fun of cosplaying if there isn't a bit of challenge to it?
But if i do cosplay an OC, I tend to have higher standards for it.

It depends on the OC. I'm planning on cosplaying as one next summer. ^-^

YES!!! I'm a huge fan of Kim Hyung Tae, I've done a few of his design. But lately I've been going through his artbook and picked out every design that I wanted to cosplay that was a study or not an actual character in one of the games... I still want to cosplay them... crying

I seldom get to rp at cons, because I am on staff, but I don't know about an OC.

xinitia the point of cosplaying is to have fun, ne? as long as its fun, why not? Yeah, that's a good point.
I guess......sometimes, some of us forget that.... (None of my friends cosplay, so I often go alone, and I suppose it becomes a bit more like an obsession than a hobby...) sweatdrop

The first time I ever cosplayed at a con was as an original character. I didn't get any comments, but since it was a character I'd created that was from a specific show I kept running away from the other cosplayers who were characters from that show because I didn't know how they would react.

I saw someone do it...it wasn't an OC per se, but an OC from a fancomic that was based off a character from the original story. It was really cool and I was super excited to see it, but the problem lies in whether or not you want to receive recognition. If the cosplay's just for your own amusement, OCs are fun and great costumes, but if you want people to recognize you, they're bad ideas.
I would love to cosplay a couple of my OCs, but I look nothing like them. *laughs* And I like getting recognized. :3

I think it's one thing to come up with an original character to cosplay. But I think it's entirely different if you've created a character previously and you've decided to cosplay them. I have some character designs from my comic that I'd love to cosplay. One of them, I've already made. Nobody knew who I was. But I'm hoping that if one day, my comic gets further progressed (I'm so busy, I haven't had much time to work on it) and people know it better, they'll recognize the characters and cosplay them. :3
I mostly like doing it because I'm showing off my own character designs. But... I also approach it the same way I'd approach any other character. To me, it feels more unique and creative.
I personally love character and costume design. I like taking the character's personality and putting it into their clothing. When you look at them, you want to know more about the character and what they're all about.
I think it's also a great way to promote your work. If you're a comic artist, cosplaying from your comic (and doing it very well) could get a lot interest. smile
