So, having taken a first-year psyc course, I do know some theories of dreams. As well as my own. I doubt there is a "one thing" or "one explanation" for dreams - it is one of those things that can have various meanings.
One theory is that of Divination. Have you ever dreamed of something, and then had it come true? How about Deja-vu? (for I believe that, most times, deja-vu is you remembering a dream, only you don't remember that it was a dream biggrin ) Obviously, it tells the future, either in plain language where you understand - you dream about going to a dance and the next night you go to a dance, for example - or it can be cryptic. Maybe you dreamt about almost-missing your train and having to jump aboard, but in doing so you dropped your -random item- . The next morning you wake up late and are running out the door to get to school/work/where ever, and forget your lunch, or something (which has actually happened to me).
Another theory is revealing your inner-self or subconscious. Something that is going on in your mind, or in your life, might present itself to you in dream-form. The only example I can actually think of for this (so please reply with examples for me!~)is having gay dreams biggrin Yes, I'm a girl, who has a boyfriend, but I've dreamt of being with girls before. I doubt I'm lesbian, but perhaps I'm bi-sexual and don't know it? My dreams are trying to tell me that I'm missing out on this experience? biggrin These types of thoughts run through my mind when I dream things like this, because I cannot see it in my future, and it has nothing to do with my life, so is it an inner desire I don't even recognise in waking life?
Another big one is that we dream of things we saw or did the day(s) before. If you're wondering why you have this zombie dream, maybe you shouldn't have watched Resident Evil. Also, I would add under this category, things that you are thinking about that day. If there is something big happening the next day, that you are thinking about, then it's likely you'd dream about it. You've got a performance the next day so you're a bit anxious. You dream about being at that performance.
Those are the three theories I have/agree with. Anyone want to add to the list? Add to the examples? Place their dream under a theory? biggrin

I believe we leave our bodies when we dream.
Concerning divination, I believe we often interact with something in our state of dreaming - some kind of entity. So, I believe that such an entity is perfectly capable of showing us a future, as our timeline is undecidedly omnipresent vs linear/circular.
I also have this strange theory concerning reality that is necessary to know for my views on dreams. I think dreams and 'reality' are exactly the same with equal validity, impact, truth, and consequence. I believe that each human creates his or her 'real world' to be either what they desire or what they need to evolve. I think everything in the consistant reality is symbolic of something within us just as much as everything in a dream state is. So I think in a dream, everything we see is a manifestation of who we truly are, even if it is a nightmare. I think much can be learned from analyzing all the symbols of a dream, just as much as one could learn from analyzing the symbols of the consistant world.
Concerning your specific dream: I think you may be experiencing this in your dream to discover how you feel about it. Maybe it doesn't have to be in your future, because in my opinion based on my theory of 'reality,' you are actually doing it in your dream. It may not even have anything to do with such a desire, but it might be completely symbolic. Maybe it exists to help you put a thought to rest. If you disliked your dream, maybe you had it to prove something to yourself.

Ah, I like your idea of reality.
I also should add under my theory on the subconcious here....the Freudian idea. Which I had forgotten until only recently when we were discussing it in English.
Things that you suppress will undoubtedly pop up when you least expect them, and in odd places. Like dreams. It is quite possible too, then, that some dreams are a form of your subconscious telling you something you DON'T want to hear...but of course it will tell you anyway biggrin
So of course, this may fit in with your idea. If I am something, but don't want to believe it, so I suppress the feelings and ideas...they pop up in my dream, trying to tell me that they are real :S smile Makes sense to me, anyway.
