Dark Haven has grown considerably in the last six years. The once tiny streets and small buildings have expanded into two lane roads and larger, more posh establishments. People from all over the world, seeking sanction from persecution have moved to the desert town, intent on building and living peaceful lives. The Market had been set up about two years ago to better serve the community’s needs and to allow some of the more common townsfolk an opportunity to sell some of the things they’ve made or produced. Hence, Saturdays are always busy. People bustle about in the streets, vendors call to potential customers, and horse drawn carts and motorcars cut through the crowd.

There are permanent shops set up down all four sides of the square, and in front of them, the Saturday carts stand in crooked lines. There are alleyways and other tiny passageways between buildings that lead to the other areas of the town. From dawn until dusk, the area is packed with people of all kinds. Dust flies in all directions, kicked up by the large population, and the heat does not seem to deter anyone at all.

The shopkeeper watched the little girl near the apple stand. She was very small and blonde, with huge blue eyes that brimmed with tears. It was fairly obvious that she was a street urchin, as her clothes, an oversized blue sweater and baggy cargo shorts, were dirty and unkempt. Her hair was in a similar state of disarray, and there were makeshift bandages covering her knees and arms. She was probably nearing her sixth birthday, but her composure, though timid, told of someone who had lived in misfortune for many years.

She eyed the apples before looking around suspiciously, reaching up, and plucking one from the pile. She stuffed the fruit into one of the side pockets on her shorts and made to leave. The shopkeeper stepped out from around the register counter and halted her, grabbing her wrist and frowning.

“Hey girl, you can’t take that without paying for it.”

The child squeaked into terror, her large eyes overflowing with tears. She struggled to free herself, but she was no match for the shopkeeper’s firm grip. She lost her battle with her fear and burst into sobs, shaking her head, which sent her golden hair into a chaotic halo around her head.

Suddenly, she was out of his grasp and the shopkeeper found himself face to face with a young boy.

This boy had hate in his dark green eyes. His red hair fell in a messy mop on his head, falling into his heated gaze. He was dirty, his clothes in a similar state, riddled with holes and tears – it actually seemed a wonder that they were even holding together at all. Unlike the girl, however, there were no marks on his body, no bloody bandages, no scars or wounds of any kind. This was strange for a street kid. He was barely older than the small girl who had stolen the apple, so he had vaulted into the counter, and now had the shopkeeper’s shirt locked in a steel fist.

“If you touch her again,” the boy growled, his voice full of venom, “I’ll rip your throat out.”

From the other side of the market, a six year old child with red hair was watching the interaction with a muted fascination. In any other place her appearance might have been taken for odd.

It wasn't everyday that one came across a child who bore wings, cat-ears and a long curling mane of startlingly red hair. It wasn't simply orange or russet. It was a crimson ruby hue. Her blue eyes were narrowed as she watched the boy take the street seller by the collar before glancing back at the frightened blond girl.

And whilst the boy held the body and attention of the market worker hostage, an apple near the back of the table seemed to float for the briefest of seconds before tumbling and landing directly in the girl's hand.

"Fynn!" A voice cut through the air and the girl quickly turned her head.

"Yes mama?"

"I told you we were going to come to the market once I was done at the bank..." The woman had reached the child now and hand both hands on her hips.

"I got bored...I'm sorry..."

"You scared me." The mother, a woman in her twenties sighed, brushing a lock of dark hair from her face. She bore the same ears as her daughter and despite the amber eyes and dark hair, they held a similar facial resemblance.

"I'm sorry..." The girl bit at her bottom lip, feeling slightly guilty even as her gaze drifted once more to the scene taking place half the square away.

"It's fine...just listen to me next time okay? Otherwise you'll be grounded."

"But mom!"

"No buts. Come on." She opened her arms and the girl rushed over, eagerly clambering up into her mother's embrace. The mother hefted her up, easily settling her on a hip.

She surveyed the scene, wondering what exactly had caught her daughter's attention. Immediately she caught sight of the blond child and the apple she seemed to be staring at in wonder.

'Fynn what did you-"

"Nothing, I swear."

The mother wasn't quite ready to believe that but she felt as though she should probably intervene and so strode over to the three figures. As they neared them, Fynn caught the blond girl's gaze.

"It's okay." She mouthed, nodding at the apple. "Hide it."

"Everything okay here?" The woman glanced between boy and shopkeeper uncertainly.

"Oh." The noise escaped from the shopkeeper's mouth as if more by a fearful release of air more than anything else. He gritted his teeth and seemed to regain his composure, arranging his face into as angry of an expression as he could muster. "Everything's fine ma'am, these little brats were just leaving." To the boy he said, "Let go of me you piece of s**t vermin. You have no right to -- "

He stopped when the red headed boy pulled his lips back in a malevolent snarl, bearing sharp fangs. "I have no right to what," he spat, the harshness of his words completely contradicting his young appearance. "You think just because you're bigger, you can toss around an innocent little girl? Try tossing me around then. We'll see how long you last."

The small blond girl sniffled and blinked back her tears. She was genuinely elated to see the boy, even though she knew he would come. He never let her down. She often found herself in bad situations, and though one might call her careless or naive, she simple knew that he would always appear and rescue her. She had been frightened of the shopkeeper, but now she was a little afraid that her friend would do something rash. With so many people around, it could prove to be less than desirable. She looked at the apple that had somehow tumbled into her hand, and then at the red haired girl in the woman's arms.

The winged girl smiled at her, and she couldn't help but smile back. Discreetly, she stuffed the fruit in her pocket with the other one. She looked up at the woman, then at her friend, and finally on the shopkeeper. For the first time, she spoke up, her voice very small and soft.

"Simon, please don't kill him. He didn't hurt me, look." She held out her wrists, which lacked any bruises. "See? If you do anything now, we'll get in trouble. There're people everywhere."

"Taryn, just stay out of this. This guy --"

"No! Please! Let's just go."

The boy grunted and grudgingly let go of the shopkeeper's shirt. His white wings ruffled up a bit to show his irritation before he hopped down from the counter. Standing there next to each other, it became apparent that these kids were in bad shape. Obviously malnourished, clothes in a sad state, and the girl covered in scrapes and cuts from falling or being manhandled, they didn't look like they had led very forgiving lives. Simon reached out to grab Taryn's hand, and as he did so, a very familiar tattoo of two crossed swords surrounded by holly branches flashed briefly before it disappeared from view, interlocking with Taryn's tiny hand.

Simon all but pulled his companion toward the exit of the market, pausing when he realized that a woman holding a child was blocking his way. "What are you looking at," he sneered. "Get out of my way."

His eyes traveled upwards and locked on the little girl's. A shiver ran down his spine, and for the first time in his short life, he faltered. Something about this kid actually scared him. He backed up a step.

Taryn looked at Simon with concern. "What's the matter?"

Simon shook his head. "Nothing. Lady, get out of my way."

Standing just far enough from the apple stand to be overlooked as someone watching what was going on, there stood a young man, eyeing what was happening through the thick crowd. His bright eyes focused with inhuman accuracy on the little scuffle that had almost happened.

He noted Nolah, and that miracle of a child in her arms. A bit of a sneer crossed this man's face - he'd never liked the child. He'd heard the stories. She was born, immediately aged for years, and killed the Reaper. And then for her, it was as if nothing had happened. She didn't stick around to put the pieces back together.

But he'd known those people were there. It was the angel child and his little friend that had caught this person's interest. Thoughtfully pursing his lips, he left his place and crossed the bustling street, shoving his hands in his pockets and expertly navigating the crowd until he was nonchalantly standing behind them. The woman and eerie child were close. It was a good time to gather more information on them as well.

"You know, stealing apples, no matter how creative you are with it, is still stealing." He raised an eyebrow and let a very smug smirk cross his face. That smile often graced his features, and it often times sent a thread of anger through those who knew him.

"Especially when the cart down the street gives free handouts if you give 'em big enough puppy eyes." Corbin waggled a finger at said cart and shrugged. "Just, ya know... If you wanted to know." It was obvious he was there to do more than just make small talk.

"Not very polite are you?' Nolah replied, biting at her lower lip. She'd caught the way the boy had seemed momentarily thrown off by Fynn and so stood her ground.

As the pair took hands a jolt of shock ran through her when she glimpsed the mark on the boy's wrist. But...how? Her grip on Fynn tightened.

Meanwhile the red-head was struggling to be put down and Nolah hesitated.

"Are you okay?"This question was directed at the blond, Taryn. She glanced warily at the boy, eyes dropping to his wrist again although the tattoo was now hidden from view.

However an answer wasn't forthcoming as another man suddenly joined the party.

Nolah felt instantly put off by the man. Her expression was frigid, Fynn tucked securely at her hip so as to avoid escape.

"Can I help you with something?" She asked.

Simon made an odd scoffing noise in the back of his throat. "Who'd want his help anyway? Hey dude, what are you supposed to be? The main contender in the Fight of the Freaks? Sorry man, but I think that girl has you beat." He gestured to Fynn, then grinned wickedly, but even as the words left his mouth, he felt drawn to this man. He wasn't sure what it was, but he didn't feel particularly offended, and he felt no hatred for the guy. This was surprising to him, because he was generally rather put off by the people in this town. This new person though...he was different, and Simon was having a difficult time pretending to hate him.

Meanwhile, Taryn had blinked a few times at the new man, absorbed what he had said about the apple cart down the street, and then shook her head. "No. He doesn't give handouts anymore. Simon tried to kill him, so he doesn't like us much anymore. And yes ma'am, I'm fine, thank you." It would appear that now that her companion was by her side, the shy little girl was far more confident.

"That apple stand guy had it coming," was all Simon said. Although, he had to admit, at the rate he was going, there would be no apple stands left that would give them anything. He chuckled a little at that thought. Half of the market despised the little demon-angel anyway, so it didn't matter to him who he stole from. The only thing he worried about was Taryn, and since everyone knew she was with him...would they hurt her? He'd kill them all if they tried.

Simon pulled on Taryn's hand again, and roughly pushed past Nolah, walking away from her, Fynn, and Corbin. Taryn followed him along at a slower pace, chancing a glance back at them. She smiled apologetically, her pale hair falling into her eyes. She raised a hand to wave a farewell, but Simon batted it back down gently.

"Don't do that, Ryn," he said softly, though not soft enough that he was completely inaudible. "You don't know who those people are. God, you're so trusting. One of these days, it's going to get you in a lot of trouble. Now come on."
PostPosted: Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:19 pm

Corbin gave a faux expression of being taken aback. He put a hand to his chest and raised his eyebrows, which disappeared beneath his messy bangs, "Oh, am I intruding? My sincere apologies." There was a distinct lack of sincerity. "Just thought I'd drop in and let you know that you probably shouldn't steal... Usually that little voice inside your head tells you not to... But then again, Dark Haven's got it's fair share of oddities. The lack of a moral compass was bound to show up sooner or later." A white smile flashed on his face, his bright eyes securely in contact with Nolah's. He wasn't going to back down under that glare. No siree.

The young man then turned his attention onto the young Simon, who, true to his character, was acting much older than he looked. Corbin folded his arms lightly across his chest and pursed his lips, seeming to contemplate what the young angel had to say. "Fight of the Freaks? I think you're probably right. I'm just... me. Probably one of the most 'normal' looking folks this little city has to offer. Can't say I've got wings or fangs or a tail... Or that extra arm the chick who runs the coffee shop has."

He seemed slightly less than interested that the man down the street wouldn't give her apples. The girl wasn't who he was primarily interested in. "He probably did. Half of the people here aren't who they say they are. Funny little world we live in, innit?"

It was about this time that Simon and Taryn had pushed past him to leave, and for a few moments, Corbin simply watched them go. He chewed thoughtfully on the inside of his cheek, while internally, he ran digital profiles on the two. The girl would definitely be of interest, but the boy... That little demonic angel... He was very similar to someone the Swords had once known very, very well.

Giving Nolah a salute and Fynn a light ruffle of her hair, Corbin grinned widely and sauntered away from the stand. "Keep up the good work you two. I'm sure we'll see each other again." Whether or not she followed was up to her. Corbin already knew all about Nolah... And that miraculous little daughter of hers. He wondered if the feline woman remembered anything at all. Fynn seemed to be quite unaware of her amazing past.

However, at the moment, his interest had been piqued when Simon whispered something to his darling little friend. It was barely audible over the din of those in the street, but Corbin focused in on it, and a different sort of smile graced his features. One might have described it as 'cunning,' if it hadn't been so gracefully masked as a look of someone having a pleasant shopping day.

So, to find out about the boy... He simply had to get to the girl.

Nolah made no attempt to listen to what exactly Corbin said. It was all a load of bull-s**t anyways. Her gaze narrowed further and she simply clutched Fynn more tightly to her when the man unexpectedly reached out to ruffle the red locks.

"Don't touch her." She said quietly although the real threat lay in the tone of her voice. A feeling of dread was pushing itself into her thoughts, knawing at her stomach but she kept her face neutral, none of the discomfort visible. Only the steely mask.

She'd need to make a few phone calls. Perhaps ask some old friends.

The attention he was paying the pair of urchins however was more pressing. The boy wasn't exactly social, everyone knew that, but the girl...

"I'm sorry, I didn't get your name." Nolah said suddenly, moving after Corbin.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 20, 2008 8:58 am

Simon's green eyes slid back to the two adults that were now following along after him. He was interested in this new man, but he wasn't sure how to go about it. This was a situation he had not found himself in before, and it had him a little ruffled. He didn't like it when he didn't know things. He released Taryn and pivoted so he was facing them, his sharp gaze hard and difficult to read. He raised a hand, the one with the tattoo, and showed his fangs.

"Who the hell cares what his name is? Listen you," he said, addressing first Nolah, and then Corbin. "I don't know what your deal is, but you can stop pretending to be innocent." Nolah moved closer to them, and Simon felt that same sort of fear that he'd felt earlier. It ran through him like a shiver, and again, he faltered. He didn't like the winged girl the cat-woman had locked securely in his arms. No, that wasn't it. He was terrified of her. What scared him even more, was that he didn't know why.

Simon fell silent.

Taryn looked at her friend, then at the two adults, then at Fynn. She was very confused. The way Simon was behaving was very uncharacteristic for him, and she didn't like it. He had always been the stronger minded of the pair, and now that something was getting to him, something that she didn't feel or understand, she felt a little lost.

Simon allowed his hand to drop back to his side. "To hell you with you people. You're all freaks anyway." He turned to walk away, but was suddenly hit with an overwhelming memory that wasn't his own, one that took up his entire brain, and he nearly fell over. Taryn caught him to steady him, eyes wide.

"Hey! What's wrong?"

"Welcome to Crossed Swords, Theonidas. This is your new home."

A flash.

"Why does he look so much like me?"
"Well, he is you. We made him from your genes. His name is Amadeus."

A flash.

"Athos! What are you trying to do? Kill me?! Control your power!"
"Learn to defend."

Another flash.

"I'm sorry my barstool attacked you, Nolah, sometimes it lets its heart get in the way of its head."
"That's okay, Tank. It's like this everywhere I go. I've left a trail of brokenhearted barstools in my wake."

Another flash.

"Once she is born...she will be the only one who can kill me...Athos, you're the only man I can trust to give the order to destroy me when the time comes."

"...I never meant for it to end this way. I'm sorry."

Simon pulled his arm roughly from Taryn's grasp.

"These don't belong to me!"

Take a few unsteady steps backwards, he spread his wings, and took off.

Corbin had to do a bit of a skip to keep his footing when Nolah darted after him, quite suddenly inquiring about his name. His feet tapped surprisingly heavily against the ground and he cleared his throat, looking down his nose at her, "Probably because I never gave it." He gave her a rather pointed frown.

Right before flipping said frown upside-down and offering a hand. "Th'name's Corbin. Run the shop on the corner of the main market square. I've seen you around - those ears of yours and winged daughter are a pretty big eyecatch, even here. And now that I've given mine, care to trade that knowledge for your name?" He already knew it, but ehh. Pleasantries and all that. Didn't want too much suspicion to fall all at once. Bad for business.

It was a good thing he was watching where he was going though, because Simon unexpectedly turned and held a hand up, which Corbin took as a sign to stop walking. He did just that and shoved his hands into his back pockets, eyeing the angel carefully. "No one's innocent, little one..." He might have said more, but the boy seemed to suddenly be suffering from... Something.

Another frown graced the cyborg's face. Simon wasn't doing well. All irritating light-heartedness aside, Corbin dropped to a knee to better get a look at Simon. The boy's eyes had rolled back in his head, and he seemed, for the moment, to be long gone inside his own mind.

And then... It was over. Simon came to, blurted out a sentence that made absolutely no sense, and took off.

"Damn." Corbin watched the boy's trail through the sky for a moment before looking back to Taryn. He put a hand lightly on her shoulder and locked his eyes with her own. "Has he ever done that before?" There was worry in his blue gaze - though it was hard to tell if it was genuine. Corbin, when he wanted to be, was a good actor. "And are you alright? Where does he normally go? If he's sick... We should help him."

Corbin took a glance over his shoulder at Nolah. She hadn't been expected to follow him when he'd decided to go after the children, but the moment had been too good to pass up. It was hard enough finding Simon at times, much less when he was in a talking mood. And he'd been so close... But then slipped away. For some reason, both he and Nolah being there in such close proximity had thrown the boy for a loop. Corbin wanted to know why. Not only that, but he needed to send word back soon...
PostPosted: Thu Nov 20, 2008 10:43 pm

Nolah rolled her eyes at the false charm. She wasn't buying it. There was something off about the man, she could sense it. Very slowly she let Fynn down but the girl knew well enough to stay right at Nolah's side.

"Nolah." She replied, offering nothing more and doing nothing to return the pleasantries. She didn't shake the offered hand either.

Just then Simon seemed to have decided that enough was enough and again Nolah caught a flash of the tattoo, followed by the instinctual shock of the first glimpse. Was this boy an experiment?

And then everything was happening so fast. She caught a wave of fear from the boy and realized with shock that it was fear of Fynn. Confusion knitted her brow just as Simon cried out and took off.

She watched Corbin move in on Taryn, offering concern. Holding out her hand for Fynn to take, she too moved towards the petite blond.

"Sweetie, I run a bookstore down the street, if you want you can come and wait there. I'm sure Simon will know how to find you." She gave the girl an honest smile. "And while you wait I happen to have some pie and milk waiting in the kitchen..."

She also had some old clothes of Fynn's that she was sure would fit Taryn. But most of all she wanted to keep Taryn away from Corbin. Whomever he was, she didn't trust him and as far as she could remember, instincts had always served her best.

Perhaps while the girls ate and hopefully talked a bit she'd send a message to a friend, a friend she hadn't spoke to in a while.

This was all happening very fast. Simon was gone, and these total strangers were now all around her. She wasn't scared of them per say, but without Simon, she didn't know what to do. In these situations, he was the one that pulled her out. He'd either swoop in and save her, or simply take her hand and walk away. She knew that she had come to rely on him a little too much, but she simply couldn't imagine a time would come that he wouldn't be with her, so she hadn't cared. Her blue eyes widened and filled with tears, and she did the only thing she could think of to do. She burst into sobs.

"Simon!" she squeaked. "W-where...?"

Corbin was asking her questions. She shook her head, making no attempt to regain her composure. "He's never done that before! I don't know why he did that! He left me here! I don't know what happened! I don't know if he's sick!" She took a breath. "He goes to that old building on the edge of town. That's where we live. The one that says Aeris on the side. Be careful if you go alone though...and check the elevators."

She rubbed a small hand over her face to wipe away some of her tears, and hiccuped, water still flowing down her face and making her hair stick to her cheeks. "I can't go anywhere until Simon comes back," she told Nolah. "He'd get mad if I went somewhere." She appeared to consider something. "But...he does like books. Maybe I could...see some?"

Meanwhile, Simon had ducked into an alleyway between one massive building and the smaller one next to it. He glanced up at the lettering "Aeris." For some reason, he'd always hated this building. He wasn't sure why, but he sure as hell didn't like it, but he'd set up a place for himself and Taryn here because it was the only place no one ever dared to look for them. According to stories, awhile back, there'd been a rich and powerful man working here. And then one day, The Grim Reaper came, and he killed the powerful man and all his associates. The building was no said to be haunted.

Simon hadn't seen any ghosts, and the seclusion was a welcome difference from the usually somewhat crowded streets of the rest of town. Sometimes, if someone got too close, he'd made a lot of noise to scare them away. It always worked. Now, he hopped the fence and scurried inside. He darted across the abandoned foyer and into the main elevator. It didn't work anymore, but he was able to pull the doors shut. The sat against the wall and sighed.

How embarrassing. He'd just totally gone crazy in the middle of the town in front of strangers. But that wasn't really his main concern. Where had those strange memories come from? Who was Athos? Who was Theonidas? Who was Nolah? Who was Amadeus? Why was he so scared of that girl? And why...had all the memories been from the first person? As if he was Theonidas and people were talking to him. Had they really been memories at all?

"I must be losing my mind."

Alright, this was going to have to go one of two ways. It was obvious that Nolah wasn't going to leave. Corbin knew her history with the Swords, and he was sure she knew what the symbol on Simon's hand meant. He'd have to be careful not to flash the very same thing that was on his palm. She was already too suspicious, and pushing herself very much into the business Corbin had created between the two children and himself. He'd been told to be wary of her senses about things. He had no idea she'd be that accurate.

And now, she was trying to take Taryn away from him. This led to two choices. Either try and move Taryn away... Win her trust away from Nolah, or pretend that he and the cat-woman were working together. The latter seemed a better option. That way, Nolah wouldn't be running off too far to do something that Corbin wouldn't like. Alright. Have the girl.

Corbin would go get Simon.

Putting a kind hand on the little girl's shoulder, Corbin listened to her confused explanation. In a kind, soothing, quiet voice, he responded, "Why don't you go with Nolah here, to her store. I'm sure that she'll give you good books and all the cake you want. She's a kind woman. You can wait there, and I'll go to find Simon, and tell him where you are. Would that be alright?" He raised his eyebrows and used the end of his sleeve to wipe away the tears that had run down her face.

That done, he popped back onto his feet and ruffled Taryn's hair. "Go on now, and don't worry, I'll be careful when I go over there." He tapped the side of his head with a finger, "I'm pretty good at figuring things out, so I won't let anything surprise me." He gave the girl a smile and then turned his attention towards Nolah. He could almost feel the intense sense of dislike she had for him, but he smiled right on through it. "I'll be back in a bit then... You said the bookstore, right? I'll be sure to bring Simon right over. Promise." He crossed his heart with a finger and turned on a heel, once more shoving his hands in his pockets.

He'd walk. After all, flying off with a roar of rockets probably wouldn't be the best thing for anyone. Even if it was a hell of a lot more fun.

Of course, it didn't take him long to reach the Aeris Building. Quietly, he ventured in, hardly bothered by the lack of decent light or the layer of dust that covered the floor. He flipped the vision in one of his eyes to infared - and almost immediately spotted a bundle of warmth in the elevator.

Hardly bothering to heed Taryn's warning to be careful, he strode right up to the elevator doors and pushed them apart, poking his head inside. "Simon?" He pursed his lips, having caught the tail end of what he'd said. "You're not losing your mind. That, I can assure you."

Taryn looked at Corbin, wanted to believe him and like him. He seemed like a nice fellow, and he had not shown her any reason to distrust him. Sure, Simon would say she was naive to think that people didn't have some sort of hidden agenda. But Taryn didn't think all people were bad. Simon just...didn't like them. She would have wondered if something bad had happened to him in the past to make him the way that he was socially, but she'd known him all her life, and he'd known her all of his. She didn't understand, but didn't matter. She loved him anyway. So, when Corbin suggested that she go with Nolah, she agreed with a convicted nod of her head. Plus, pie didn't sound like such a bad idea. She'd never had a real pie before, but she'd heard that they were delicious. She reached her hand out for Nolah to take as Corbin left.

Simon glanced up, instantly positioning himself into a strange stance, the kind of crouched low position a wild animal would put itself in if threatened. He let a growl escape his throat. So, here was the strange man from the square. Taryn must have told him where to find the little demon-angel. He'd have to remind her not to let strangers in on their little hideaway. That could prove dangerous in the future. He relaxed, slightly, when Corbin spoke.

"How would you know," he grumbled. "You don't even know what happened. And you don't know who I am, and I could care less who you are. Why are you here anyway?"

He leaned back against the wall of the elevator and crossed his arms, looking like a small child in the midst of pouting. For once, he looked his age. He brought his legs up so that his knees were nearly resting against his chest and pulled at a loose thread dangling from the bottom of his shorts. His clothes were a right mess. He figured he'd better stop yanking on random threads or they were liable to fall apart. His eyes fixed on Corbin again.
