The article by Mike Tokito, for The Oregonian is much better then the article by Cliff Kerpatrick for the Gazette-Times.
The reason is twofold, formation and style. Cliff’s article was to formal, to analyses like. It lacked heart, a sense of warmth that I wanted from the article. It was to fact oriented, and the way he used some of the quotes I just didn’t like.
Much of my dislike is purely based on a preference for style, I liked how mike used his quotes, I liked how he paced his article. I liked how he used the quote about pie at the end of the article, because it made a nice ending. If only for the simple fact that once you win you win, you want your dessert, and pie is the best dessert. Moreover, dessert is an evening thing it is something good for finality, Chris just tosses it in at the beginning, to me that shows a careless view of pacing.
The article’s substance begins at dessert? Hogwash!
The article was much better when it began with a nervous tradition like what Mike did, when he mentions the Obama game of basketball at the front of the story, it gives a sense that even from the outset there was a bit of apprehension, and then it goes on to describe the night.
Chris’s story is just too matter of fact for my taste, he ate pie, he did this, he did that. I don’t care. I spent roughly two years watching polls and reading news about the race for no less then 4 hours a day. I understand Obama does things, I want to see the human aspect of Obama in a day, and I want to see it through the eyes of Craig Robinson. In my opinion, I got that human aspect from Mike’s article, and not Chris’

Dr. Denton Cheney says Lincolns presidential legacy is blown out of proportion.
Dr. Cheney is a poorly dressed man with a mind for historical narratives. In the course of his studies he has written books on the American revolution and on the texas revolution. His latest book Lincoln – Man or Myth is about the historical narratives surrounding Lincoln’s life, and there often less then truthful nature.
“Biographers often fall in love with their subjects. Some of Lincoln’s seem to have tried to outdo each other in giving him special qualities,” said Dr. Cheney “Writers have attributed innumerable jokes to him in order to show his wit. Why if he cracked half the jokes he’s credited with he’d have no time for serious contemplation.
Dr. Cheney also says that Lincoln had much less to do with freeing the slaves then has been historically reported, “He made little to do over the slavery issue until late in the war…besides his Emancipation Proclamation did not free all the slaves.”
Dr. Cheney says Lincoln’s following of the constitution leaves much to be desired
“He suspended Habeas Corpus by executive order and many Northerners, estimated as high as 38,000 were imjprisoned without charges or bail.”
He even goes so far as to suggest that Lincoln’s presidency started the Civil War
“His election and subsequent acts were responsible for the Union’s being nearly broken up. The Southern states seceded as a protest against his election.” Said Dr. Cheney.

Dr. Cheney believes that historians have trouble being objective. “Many find contradictory facts and use those to that fit their preconceived bias, The best are puzzled by the existence of conflicting evidence.”
