Bredorn's mother had set him out in the garden while she worked to pull weeds. Their garden was relatively small, but thickly planted. Growing was in his mother's blood, and she tended to prefer it to herding, though she accepted that as the focus of her married life. For today, she had said something about him needing fresh air to stimulate his brain. Little did she know how his brain worked!
Outside there was so much to see, hear, feel, and absorb. For a time he'd tipped his chubby face up at the sun, squinting to try and see the bright spot in the blue sky. The feel of warmth on his face seemed to come from there, and he wondered why. Once he had even stretched his hand towards the sun, to see if he could touch it. He didn't catch the odd look his mother gave him.
Later, while his mother watered the rows of beans, carrots, potatoes, and turnips, he was mezmerized by the creeping finger of dark brown that slid past him, moving unsteadily down the careful trench his mother had made. Green eyes wide, he'd pondered if it was alife, slipping along the eart in a wiggling fashion. He'd seen worms wiggling through the earth before, but this seemed different. It was much longer, and it grew fatter after it had passed him.
Caught up in his curiousity, he noticed that the light glittered along its back, gleaming brightly like a tiny miniature sun like the one in the sky. Unable to resist, after having tried to catch the sun earlier, he leaned down and with one stubby hand, tried to grasp the light on the back of the strange dark brown long thing. He shuddered all over in shock when his hand ended up plunging into something cold and wet, and his fingers closed on something slimy.
Giving a soft gasp, he jerked his hand out and stared at his hand. It was covered in dark brown now, sticky and slick, gleaming in the light almost like the long brown thing had. For a time he merely stared, opening and closing his hand to watch the mud change places and squish uncomfortably between his fingers. When it finally dried, cracking and falling away when he wiggled his fingers, his eyes turned back to his consideration of that thing that had turned out to be wet. Using only a finger this time, he cautiously poked where the sun was reflected on the surface of the water, which was still flowing freely past him in the irrigation trough.
Yes, it was still wet... but what had been so sticky? He plunged his hand deeper, raking his extended finger along the bottom of the trough, stirring up mud. Amazed, he watched as the swirls of earth entered the stream, curling and twirling as they flowed away from him. Pulling his hand back again, he looked up at his mother with his mouth in a round "o" of amazement. She was too busy examining the leaves for bugs only sparing him a brief and irritated glance. How could he know how different he was from her other children? His mind was more active than his body so far, but that did not make him hindered. She would see that someday.
For now, he again turned his eyes to the water flowing by. Curious what would happen, he again stuck one finger out and raked dry dirt from the side of the trough, watching as it changed color and hurried away. Blinking thoughtfully, he stuck his hand in his mouth, eyes on the tiny stream that was feeding the plants. It took a few moments for him to realize that his fist tasted odd, but when it finally dawned on him, he made the most awful face and waved the offending hand around. Face crumpled and muddy, tongue sticking out with it's burden of dirt, he whimpered his distress to his mother, who mutered exasperatedly before scooping up and carrying him inside to clean up.

::grumbles to herself about someone in another thread calling Chronicles of Narnia sexist, racist, and religiously intolerant:: Sexist I suppose because the girls were feminine and allowed the boys to do the dirty work (nevermind how courageous they were, and that they did indeed participate in the battles!).... racist I have NO idea why, considering the vast variety of Beasts and creatures that were all accepted in Narnia.... and religiously intolerant... hmmm... sounds to me like we aren't supposed to hold to our beliefs? How dare someone declare belief in one God! That's infringing upon someone else. Ah, but THEY can babble on and on, and we jsut have to take it. ::mumbles:: It goes that way for racism too. It is politically correct to address a 'black community', but imagine the outrage and hissyfits there would be if the 'white community' was addressed and appealed to! ::shuts up now::
