I do believe in the confines of the religion of Wicca, Wicca and Witchcraft are one in the same. But, one can be Wiccan and not practice witchcraft and one can practice witchcraft and not be a Wiccan. They are separate but as i mentioned, are linked in the religion of Wicca.
As previously, Wicca is a religion of both. The religion and beliefs in Wicca come before witchcraft of any type. Most of those who practice witchcraft, unless in a religious form can do as they please, but Wiccan witches are limited by our religious tenants. In that respect, I believe Wiccans are a 'different breed' because we have our own system of magick, divine magick I like to call it, where we get our energies and powers from our deities and the elements. That may be true for some forms of magick but not all.
I have been practicing Wicca...this Yule will be 6 years. as for my knowledge of traditional witchcraft, I have little knowledge.
I do not believe that Wiccans are any better or worse than anyone else. As per our belief, we believe we were given our abilities by our deities, but on the opposite end, I believe that everyone was given their abilities by our deities. As I mentioned, we are what I could call 'divine magicians' because we use our deities as our source. Some general witches don't believe in anything so they have no source or a different source than Wiccans. Just because we pledged to be Wiccans does not mean that we are in a way 'special'.
I personally do not believe that what I do is better than science. Some things cannot be explained by science. The energies we use are identified by science but not explained by science. That does not mean it is better than science.
The origin if Wicca, as I see it is lengthy. I believe it is simply a difference ot terms that hangs most up. I believe Wicca was around for many years and Garald Gardner brought it into the modern age- media wise- and it took on a new name.
I don't think anyone can give it an age, but the newest name is roughly 70 some years old.
Wicca is not all about magick and witchcraft. Wicca is a religion designed to create a connection with the divine. And people may try to disprove as much as they can to discredit our religion but that is not what matters, what matters is that the followers of the religion are genuine and have a personal connection with what they view as God. You may have your own views and opinions about the neccesity of religion, but those people that are here are trying to better themselves through Wicca and are trying to make something of their lives in accordance with their belief. I don't think that is reason to ridicule or judgement.
